How Would Steve Jobs Introduce Your Book

One of my favorite presentations of all time is the Steve Job’s original iPhone announcement at Macworld, January 9th, 2007.
Here is an excerpt…
Every once in a while a revolutionary product comes along that changes everything… Well, today we’re introducing three revolutionary products at this conference. The first one, is a wide screen iPod with touch controls. (the crowd applauds and cheers) The second is a revolutionary mobile phone.

Are you getting it?
These are not three separate devices. This is one device.
And we are calling it iPhone.
(crowd goes wild)

I was spending that summer in Park City Utah, when the phone released.
If you watched the news that day, every major metropolitan Apple Store had huge lines and the phones were selling out.
Despite what the news was saying, I decided to drive down to the Salt Lake City Apple Store, and see if I could grab one for the novelty of it.
Despite what was going on nationally, I was successful.
The reason why it was selling out (at well over 4 times the price of the most expensive phones of the day), was because of something Jay Abraham calls preeminence.
Preeminence in a nutshell is “surpassing all others in a distinguished way.”
The iPhone had preeminence. There was nothing else like it available.
And that does something very special for a product or service, it eliminates selling based on price.
If your book or what you teach surpasses all others in a distinguished way, you can price it however you want. There is no comparison shopping available.
One of my favorite authors is Ben Settle, and his books range from $200 – $1000 because of this exact phenomenon. There is nothing else like his books out there. Can you imagine how things would change for your business if you made an offer that no one else did?

The One Word you must use in any negotiation

Back in my Corporate America days, I was stuck in a white collar job I did not love.
I was a database administrator (DBA for those who know the lingo) for legacy systems (IMS and DB2).
In any job, it is pretty easy to feel like you don’t have many other options.
I know I felt that way for while. I certainly wasn’t in a position where I could use all of my strengths, and as I mentioned, I wasn’t passionate about it.
But then I found a position in software sales where I could connect with people, travel and share my knowledge.
At the time, it was my dream job.
The interview went well, and an offer was coming.
The truth is, I would have accepted less pay than I already had for this job.
But there was obviously no sense in letting them know that.
The issue was, I would have to move to the San Francisco area, a much higher cost of living than I was accustomed.
So I did some research on how much more I would need to make to break even.
During my research, I came across a short article on how to negotiate salary and decided to read it.
That article has changed my life (many times over).
The gist of what the article said was this…
No matter what the amount of the offer you receive is, no matter how good it sounds, no matter how excited you are… …you must keep a solemn straight face and respond with only one word… “Hmmmm” This must be used, even if you instantly know you are going to accept the offer. Why? When a negotiation takes place, no matter how small, both parties end up with more satisfaction. Let’s say that you want to buy my used car. You ask how much? I say 5k. And you immediately say… “You got a deal!” I then realize I probably could have received more since you agreed so quickly. And actually, you have no idea if I would have taken less. But when you negotiate, both sides feel like they worked to the best possible offer.

It made sense. So I was ready to implement.
When the phone call came from the recruiter with the offer, I just kept rehearsing that word in my head… Hmmm… Hmmm… Hmmm…
Then came the offer, but uh oh, they were offering my dream job and a 50% increase on what I was currently making.
My inner voice changed its opinion on our planned tactic and was screaming in my head… Abort Mission! Abort! Abort! Accept the offer!!!!!
I only had a fraction of a second to decide, or everything would look rehearsed.
But I had to know if this strategy worked, even though I was freaked out they may rescind the offer if I pissed them off.
Here goes, I replied with… Hmmm….
The recruiter asked what was wrong?
I was only slightly prepared to answer, but my response came out fairly well. I told her that I loved the job opportunity but that the cost of living where I was going to be living should make the salary higher.
In fact, I gave her a number about 20% higher. I also backed it up with data from my research.
To say I was shaking in my boots is an understatement.
She took the info back to the company and they came back with a counteroffer very close to what I asked for. And clearly, both parties were more excited about the agreement.
That one little word added 18% to my salary to start which would have arguably taken 5-6 years to hit via corporate performance appraisals had I started at the original salary.
I used the same strategy a year later for an even larger % when a recruiter came knocking.
The real secret here is that you are showing that you know you are valuable and how valuable. Showing confidence almost always works in your favor.

Why every Author should watch The Karate Kid

The 1984 film the Karate Kid is the story of Daniel Laruso and his karate mentor Mr. Miyagi.
One of the more famous lines from the film is simply… Wax on, Wax off.
Daniel is to be trained in karate by Mr. Miyagi, yet all that seems to be happening is he is doing chores for Mr. Miyagi.
Mr. Miyagi has a very specific method for how he wants his car waxed. One hand makes circles counter clockwise, the other clockwise. Wax on, wax off.
He the has Daniel paint the fence in a very specific way.
Next it is sand the floor.
After what appears to be weeks of doing only these chores, Daniel gets frustrated and threatens to quit.
He is so upset because he is doing all this work and what he really wanted to do is learn karate.
To which Mr. Miyagi yells for him to sand the floor.
Within two minutes Mr. Miyagi shows Daniel that all those “chores” were actually teaching him his foundational defensive positions.
He had learned the pieces, he hadn’t realized it yet.
They simply needed to be put together.
That scene by itself makes the movie.
I have had the same experience putting together my online business.

How to Apply the Franchise Model to your Book and Business

Back in 2008, I invested in my first (and only) franchise. It was for real estate property management.
I already had nearly two decades of experience in real estate investing, and had managed my own rental properties. So I was fairly experienced with collecting rent, making repairs and evictions.
But creating a business out of what I knew was another story.
That was the appeal of the franchise. I was not simply buying more knowledge, I was buying a proven system.
I cut a large check (by my standards — though probably small by typical franchise standards), and received the system.
And it worked like gangbusters.
The founders of the franchise had systematized everything from bringing clients (property owners), tenants, employees and vendors.
I recall that they basically said for attracting property owners, enter your data on this website, put in your credit card for ads, and turn it on.
We received our first inquiry within hours.
It may have taken me years to figure that out on my own (we had used classified ads in the paper prior to that if you can believe it).
The same held true for rented out units we were contracted to manage.
All the contracts, accounting and tracking systems worked out of the box. We were making a profit that very first month.
I don’t if every franchise works as well, but I assume they are intended to.
Consider if you wanted to purchase a McDonalds franchise.
You don’t have to go figure out what equipment to buy, how to hire and train employees or where to get your burgers. Let alone how many minutes to cook them.
You essentially unpack the box and just follow the instructions.
Of course, the franchises take a percentage of your income going forward, but that means they have skin in the game to see you succeed.
That system to jump start businesses is what I believe the future of online is all about.

Moving from Course Collector to Sales Creator

Raise your hand if this happens to you.
You buy a new shiny course (say on running ads for your book).
You are sure this course is the thing that will change everything.
You go through the course, and especially if it is long, the novelty fizzles out.
You learned a lot, and there were also a few things you didn’t quite understand.
But then you see it. There is another course that has the missing piece of the puzzle.
And the cycle repeats.
You never quite learn enough to take action.
There is always something missing. It is small, but we just need that next course to get it.
Does this sound like something you are familiar with?
I can describe it so well, because that was me starting out.
It isn’t that the courses themselves are sub-par.
In the beginning, we always lack confidence, knowledge, and experience.
That creates fear, which prevents action.
We use the excuse that we need more knowledge to mask that fear.
If I look back and decide what I would do differently if I was starting now, it would be this:
Prioritize action and learn along the way.
I was a course collector for a few years before I felt confident enough to start.
Those years would have been better used by simply taking action.
But action is tough if you are just taking a course, and trying to fill in all the knowledge and skill gaps by yourself.
Coaching or a Done-For-You service can really help get you into the game.
But they cost more, right?
Well, upfront they do.
But when I add up all the courses I have bought in my career, intending to do it all myself, they add up to a lot more than if I had just hired someone to get me going.
The scary thing about getting expensive help is the risk of something not working after that high price tag Then we are back to buying more courses.
But I see something on the horizon that may change quite a bit in the marketplace (across all niches). The rise of guaranteed results.
The idea is that you hire someone for a Done-For-You service, or Done-With-You service, and they guarantee some sort of outcome.
It could be simply that you will earn your money back, or get 1000 readers or something beyond just the service itself.
Admittedly, that is not easy for the providers to offer and they can only offer it to qualified clients.
But I think it may be commonplace in the next few years.
Hopefully, it will be something you do on the back end of your book as well.
If you could offer something like that for your clients, imagine the position it would give you in your marketplace.
