Happy Book birthday!

Happy Book Birthday to A Shade Too Far (Magic After Midlife, #3)!
I feel like it’s been seventy-two gazillion years since book 2 came out. Dang pandemic. But I finally get to share the next chapter in Miri’s story with you. Brace yourself! Heh. Heh.
Miriam’s hot flashes leave her shvitzing, and 10PM is the new midnight, but she still craves an adventure, sexytimes, (and maybe a nap.)
When I stole a demon artifact for a client, I never expected it to result in a magic curse. Failure to reverse it will mean the death of someone close to me, the end of my uneasy alliance with the head vampire, and open season on my family.
As if that didn’t suck enough, my screw-up on a dangerous fact-finding mission may have kicked my sexual tension with the wolf shifter in the balls. At least I’m not obsessing over it, since fighting through a maze of mind games, tested loyalties, and secrets is consuming all my energy.
So, glass half-full.
Now armed with my trusty to-do list, I’m determined to multitask my way to victory like a magic badass.
Yaas, Queen.
A Shade Too Far is perfect for fans of K.F. Breene, Shannon Mayer, Victoria Danann, Brenda Trim, and Heloise Hull.

Don’t the two books look pretty together?
Things are heating up for Miri in this next book. I think that out of all the supernatural mysteries I’ve written, this one features the most twists and turns. It was a blast to come up with this roller coaster ride.
If you haven’t had a chance to read Throwing Shade yet, what are you waiting for? It’s even on sale for 99c in the US and UK until June 11. readerlinks.com/l/1593400

More Musings on Monstrous Women

In my last post, I mentioned a course I was doing through The Carterhaugh School called Monstrous Women. The first three weeks revolved around the archetypes of the maiden, the mother, and the crone, and that got me thinking about my own characters.
My darling hot mess Nava, is definitely a maiden, and yet, I’d argue that over the course of the series, she grows into being a symbolic mother to the Brotherhood. (Not to Rohan, though, because that would be weird. lol) I’d never thought about her that way, and it was an interesting realization.
However, Ash was tougher to define. I’d say that she occupies a space between maiden and mother. The way I see it, she is a bit too cynical and jaded for the maiden archetype, yet I wouldn’t say that she ever becomes a mother figure to the others.
This brings me to Miriam, my literal and archetypical mother. Perhaps it’s because I, too, am a mother, but she is the character I love writing the most. It’s incredible cathartic to include my parenting experiences and the way I view my body as part of this character.
Writing Miri balancing being a kickass magic being with her responsibilities as a mom is a fun challenge. It’s one thing to be childless and fight evil. Yet, when you have to get dinner on the table or worry about a vampire snacking on your kid, that entails a whole host of other conflicts and choices and I am here for that.
Plus, it is wonderful to guide Miri through this new and hopefully exciting (no spoilers) chapter of her sexuality. Far too often, mothers are lumped as sexless crones (which isn’t even fair for many much older women.) I’m happy for Miri to reclaim a good sex life. If that ever happens… Heh. Heh.

Monstrous Women and the Art of Rage

It’s funny how things converge. I’m taking this amazing online course from The Carterhaugh School called Monstrous Women. It’s taught by two very intelligent and eloquent folklorists and I’m loving all the material.
At the same time that I randomly learned about this course, I read opinion piece by Mona Eltahawy about women being called wh*res, be it for sexual desire or wanting attention.
Or should I say the sin of wanting attention?
That lead me to pick up her book The 7 Necessary Sins for Women and Girls.
Oh, ladies, how wonderfully monstrous we women can be. Especially if we tap into our rage, an emotion that the patriarchy has a vested interest in beating out of us. (Read Eltahawy’s book. Trust me.)
But it got me thinking about my own writing and the monstrous women that I create. It will shock no one to learn that behind all my humor is a great deal of rage. That said, I view this rage as a positive asset. It allows me to explore a wide range of gender politics in the guise of a fun magic adventure.
There is a lot of discussion these days (and rightly so) about the importance of, not just diversity in books, but #ownvoices, people within specific communities getting to tell their own stories.
I’d add, bring on more tales of modern monstrous women. These messy, flawed, complicated, wonderful, and yes, angry females (and non-binary characters) who cross all races, religions, sexual orientations, and borders.
This is not about bashing men. It’s about taking up space and speaking out about the million things we’ve been expected to keep quiet about.
Grover may have feared the monster at the end of his book, but I celebrate the ones at the start of all mine.

Am writing and how!

I’m writing book 3 of Miri’s story and having so much fun! As much as I love Ash, looking back, I spent a lot of time overthinking every aspect of the story. I was so worried I’d disappoint my readers who loved Nava so much.
It was different with Nee, because I had zero expectations going into that series. I certainly didn’t expect it to take off like it did (though of course I hoped it would). Given the pipeline and how quickly I released the first three books, I was already writing book 4 by the time it sunk in that her story had connected with people.
For that reason, I felt a lot more freedom writing the demon hunter books than The Jezebel Files.
And now, here comes Miri. My friend said to me that I’d hit my sweet spot, with all the worldbuilding and mythology that I love to come up with, but starring an older character that I could pour more of myself and my experiences into. And she’s right.
Of course, part of it is also now having 1 urban fantasy novels under my belt and knowing what works for my storytelling and what doesn’t. All of this is my long-winded way of saying that I have no intention of wrapping up the Magic After Midlife series any time soon.
Let’s go for 10 books in this series, people!

Paranormal Women’s Fiction Hot Release!

It feels like I’ve waited forever to share my very first paranormal women’s fiction with you! But at long last, that day has arrived.
While Nava and Ash will always be close to my heart, writing a character over forty is a true delight. I’m able to pour a lot more of myself into Miriam.
This hot new release celebrates women over forty who crave a little magic. Our hot flashes leave us shvitzing and 10PM is the new midnight, but we’re still up for an adventure (and maybe a nap.)
Miriam Feldman is ditching her shapewear, owning her hormones, and letting her magic fly free.
Underestimate her. That’ll be fun.
It’s official. Miri is killing it in the midlife crisis department. She’s mastered boredom, aced invisibility, and graduated Summa Cum Laude in smiling and playing nice in her post-divorce life. But when a drink with a “good guy” goes sideways, Miriam snaps, and in a cold dark rage unleashes a rare and powerful shadow magic.
To make matters worse, her best friend goes missing and Miri is thrust into a world of hidden magic, vampires, and a legacy of hatred aimed directly at her. Hard to say which is more dangerous, this spiderweb of supernatural power plays, the grumpy French wolf shifter she’s teamed up with, or Miri herself, kicking butt and rediscovering the woman who got lost along the way.
But lines get blurred in the shadows, and if she’s not careful, she could lose everyone she loves. She’ll have to turn her invisibility into strength and pray they never see her coming.
Forty isn’t the new twenty. It’s better.
Throwing Shade features a sassy, slow burn romance. This paranormal women’s fiction is perfect for fans of K.F. Breene, Darynda Jones, and Shannon Mayer.

What’s in a name?

I obsess over character names. The heroine of this new series is Miriam (Miri) Feldman and while I usually go through a ton of different possibilities before I settle on a name, this was the choice from the get-go.
Miriam is kind of old-fashioned, but that’s appropriate, given where the inspiration for that name came from. See, when I was a kid, my grandmother had a tight-knit group of friends who would regularly lunch together.
Not only that, every Saturday, they would meet up in the morning at the hair salon. They’d hang out and gossip while they got dolled up for whatever event was on their calendar that night.
It was definitely a different era. However, my grandmother would often let me come along to these outings and I loved it. There was something so incredible about being amongst all these amazing women who had gone through wars and tragedy and yet, celebrated life with everything they had.
One of her most glamorous friends (to my young self) was the only divorcée in the group – Miriam. This was huge at the time, but every time I saw her, she was laughing and gorgeous and living life on her terms.
So with the creation of paranormal women’s fiction and the opportunity to write a character in her forties, there was really little doubt about what her name was going to be.
