Vancouver is more than just a backdrop in my urban fantasy books—it’s a character in its own right. I love weaving real-life locations into my stories, adding a magical twist to familiar places. One of my favorite settings? The Richmond Night Market, a vibrant, chaotic, and utterly delicious Vancouver institution that made its way into The Unlikeable Demon Hunter: Burn (Nava Katz, #6).
The Magic of the Richmond Night Market
If you’ve never been, imagine a sea of neon signs, the tantalizing scent of grilled squid and bubble waffles, and a crowd buzzing with excitement. Add in the unpredictable Vancouver rain, some over-the-top décor (think T-Rex statues and giant rubber ducks), and you’ve got a setting practically begging for some supernatural mayhem.
In my book, Nava finds herself at the Richmond Night Market in a scene filled with pouring rain, hunger-fueled aggression, and a fight that might have been ever-so-slightly inspired by real life. (What? Hangry disputes are a thing in marriage!)

5 Book Boyfriends I Have Loved: A Reader’s Confession
Gather round, darlings. It’s time to talk about the most tantalizing variety of guy—the book boyfriend. (Cue the eye-rolls from our real-life beloveds. But really, you knew what you were signing up for when you fell in love with a girl who reads.)
Today, I’m spilling the tea on a few of my all-time favorite book boyfriends. These fictional heartthrobs have stolen my heart in their own unique ways. Here’s my list—feel free to judge or swoon alongside me!
1. Archie Andrews (Created by Bob Montana)Ah, Archie. My first love. Red hair, freckles, and the dubious honor of juggling Betty and Veronica’s affections. I was seven years old, so cut me some slack! Back then, I hung on Veronica’s every word—how could she steer me wrong? In hindsight, I should have waited for Jughead to grow up, get hot, and dominate the gaming industry, but Archie will always hold a nostalgic piece of my heart.
2. Charlie Lastra (From Book Lovers by Emily Henry)This dark-haired, razor-sharp editor exudes sarcasm and intellect, masking a tender heart desperate for beauty in life. Emily Henry’s exquisite portrayal of his nuanced personality left me utterly smitten. Charlie’s the guy who challenges you, secretly cherishes you, and sees the world through a lens of raw honesty wrapped in a curmudgeonly exterior. Who wouldn’t fall for him?
3. Jericho Barrons (From the Fever Series by Karen Marie Moning)Having just re-read the Fever series for my 10th (?) time, I am able to say that Jericho remains my hot fictional guy of choice. Forget alpha male, this guy is in his own category. As in not entirely human. But his intelligence, wit, and intense masculinity, allow him to incinerate any scale of sexiness into ashy hotness. He is the ultimate bad boy; you know if he could only find the right women who is absolutely me, he would look into my eyes and fall in love and then I’d be the luckiest girl in the world. *snort* Kind of. But yes.
4. Nicholas (From Painted Faces by L.H. Cosway)A heterosexual drag queen who goes by the name Vivica at night, Nicholas is fiercely compelling. Rampantly sexual, funny, and yet fighting very real personal demons, he is my favorite embodiment of smoldering hot, cocky, snarky, and smart. But what I adore most is how he sees Freda’s beauty and forces her to see it in herself. So many times, with these bad boys, the girls are already pretty kick ass. But Freda is chubby and mouthy and makes cupcakes. She’s absolutely fantastic. And while they seem unlikely lovers, they bring out the best and the hottest in each other. For me, that makes Nicholas even more appealing that he already so highly is on his own.
5. Prince Laurent (From Captive Prince by C.S. Pacat)Slippery in word and deed, Laurent is a plume of water wrapped in a serpent’s skin. (I’m thinking there’s a pattern with liking sharp minded, sharp-tongued men. Lol) This brilliant strategist is always three steps ahead, which makes guessing his motivations a hell of a lot of fun. And when we finally do get his POV? Damn! I was shattered. While the MC—and Laurent’s love interest—Prince Damon is the POV we follow and the typical alpha male, Laurent was the one who stole my heart.
Bonus: Rohan MitraFinally, there’s one more man I want to mention. As you know, I write funny, sexy urban fantasy. And here’s a little secret—first and foremost, I’m writing them for myself. So, I will always have a special place in my heart for my first book boy creation: Rohan Mitra. He is so fierce and funny and broken and yet so full of love. He just needs someone to shake him up and wake him up to all that. Good thing he’s got Nava.

Sneak Peek: Even Chaos Has a Breaking PointEven in a liminal wasteland ruled by chaos magic, where every second was objectively miserable and cartoonishly dangerous, this listing wall made of human bones, some with hair and sinew still attached, was, quite frankly, a bit much.
I grimaced at the eyeless skull jammed unceremoniously between two femurs. “Alas, poor Yorick! I knew him, Horatio.”
My half sister, Maud Liu, uncapped her Nalgene. “A man of that infinite a jest wouldn’t rock a toupee.” The British notes in her voice were flavored by her native Hong Kong accent. “That low-budget costume piece stuck to his pate marks him a Boris or, no, wait. Shiny Jimmy.” She took a long swig, blotting sweat off her forehead with her free hand.
The arid heat sandblasted our skin and had me swallowing every few seconds to keep moisture in my mouth.
I pulled out a finger bone that jutted out of the wall and touched it to the top of the skull like I was knighting him. “Shiny Jimmy. A petty thug with big dreams.”
“A brawler of very little brain,” Maud replied. “I may have dated him in my early twenties. Any protein bars left?”
I rummaged in the heavy pack resting in the dirt against the wall and tossed her a coconut-flavored one, grabbing a handful of trail mix for myself.
After nine hours of battling unpredictable weather, manic terrain, and distances with a maddening habit of contracting and expanding at will, our quest to find a secret fortress here in the Brink had led us to this single file dirt track alongside the aforementioned bone wall.
I squatted down and sketched a tic-tac-toe grid in the dirt with the finger bone. “Play you for the last trail mix with M&M’s while we wait for—”
The ground rumbled so violently that my teeth rattled. Suddenly, the bones in one long section of the wall exploded out to fan themselves in a herky-jerky motion before fusing together in a nightmarish malangé, piling higher and higher until the creature’s shadow blotted out the sun.
Which wasn’t a bad thing, given how hot it was.
Less ideal was the giant wearing a kneecap like a jaunty beret, a waterfall of ribs on its left side, and arm bones sticking out every which way. He rocked on webbed feet cobbled together from a couple of pelvic bones and part of a spine.
A second skull, at about butt cheek height, worked its boney mouth. “I AM SHINY JIMMY.”
Ezra Cardoso, sole remaining Prime among all the vampires in existence, blurred to a stop next to us, wearing a very human peeved expression. Streaks of dirt marred his T-shirt and jeans, his motorcycle boots were scuffed, and his jet-black curls were a riotous halo in this humidity. He raised an eyebrow. “You named it?”
Maud and I exchanged guilty looks.
“Only jokingly,” I said lamely.
“YOU HAVE OFFENDED ME,” Shiny Jimmy said. “NOW YOU WILL PAY.”
Ezra huffed a sigh that was purely for show since breathing wasn’t a requirement for my ex. “Please inform them how they have caused offense so they may grovel for forgiveness.”
“Really?” I stepped forward, my hands planted on my hips.
“This is not the hill to die on,” he muttered, snagging my damp shirt and tugging me backward.
“YOU DO NOT EVEN KNOW THE CAUSE OF YOUR OFFENSE?” Shiny Jimmy beat on the patchwork of bones forming his chest. His butt-high skull gnashed its jawbones together.
“Would you have preferred Boris?” Maud said.
Shiny Jimmy roared and swung a fist made of teeth and ropey muscle at her.
Ezra barely got her out of harm’s way, only to be clocked in the side of the head. “What did you do?” he snapped, wincing as his fingers probed a tender spot.
“Nothing!” I flung my arms up in the air.
Light glistened off the fingerbone I clutched.
“Ohhhhhh.” I held it out to Shiny Jimmy. “You want this back?”
Ezra dropped his head in despair.
