Expecting Your Sales & Operations Process to Improve After You Buy a New IT system?

vivek-mls

For a long time, after I started learning golf, I suffered from the common golfers illusion that my next new driver would magically improve my golf swing, and score. Just like many other golfers, I went through several golf drivers, before I realised that I had bought into the popular social hypnosis perpetuated by the golf industry that better game was all about the latest equipment and band-aid instructions.

Somewhere midway in my golf career I realised that regular practice, proximate challenging targets, consistent shot making process and a positive mental attitude were lot more important for golf improvement.…

What is The Screen Economy, And Why You Should Know About it?

For the first 28 years of my life, in a typical day I barely saw a screen, barring an occasional movie or TV (which averaged about 2-4 hours per week). A typical workday would entail getting up at 4 am, scanning the horizon for passing ships, watching the sun rise above horizon while I did some yogic breathing, putting the crew to work on deck, and whole-heartedly participating in the day’s work activities to work and learn.

How things have changed.…

Why Does Shipping Industry End Up At the Wrong End of the Stick Every Time?

Hanjin - Wikimedia Commons

I have thought about this simple question a lot. I joined shipping industry as a cadet in 1982 and spent the next 12 years in various roles. Even after leaving the industry, I have retained an affinity to it, and tried to apply what I learned outside the industry to problems in the industry.

In 1983, barely a year after joining the industry, I witnessed its biggest recession in history at that time. Since then, the pattern repeats itself every few years.…

Digitisation – the Biggest Opportunity Since Industrialisation

key-drivers

In the manual world everything was powered by human or animal muscle. Sure, water was used in a limited places to mill the grain, and do some other limited tasks – pretty much everything else was done using human or animal power.

We all know how all that changed in the last 250 years or so. Steamships, railways, internal combustion engines, assembly lines, even houses that have illumination at call, all are inventions of that period.

We continue to reap the rewards of that phenomenal change.…

Your Success Depends on How Well You Prioritise Your Opportunities

testimonials-7Everybody gets opportunities in life. I was lucky to get more of these. But that also taught me a lesson – not to pursue every opportunity irrespective of its potential.

There are those who will tell you to pursue every opportunity. Their theory is to fail often – and one day you will succeed. Maybe that will happen.

My theory is different – assess every opportunity with reasonable care before you pursue it. Your time is limited, and valuable.

In business world lots of businesses have been sent broke by ideas that were too big for them.…

Digitisation – How to Position Yourself For Reaping the Rewards of Economic Transformation Sweeping the Globe?

I called Digitisation the biggest Opportunity since Industrialisation in a previous article written a couple of weeks ago.

I wrote about the huge rewards that we continue to reap after that phenomenal change. And, I expected the rewards from digitisation to be even bigger in the long run. I mentioned that as yet we have barely seen the rewards of digitisation and compared the first MS Dos computers compare to even the smallest device (digital watch, or something equivalent) that people use today.

Do Not Go Around Kissing Frogs Just Because, In a Fairy Tale, One of Them Turned Into A Prince

Frogs are the business propositions, projects, ideas or divisions that can be defined as Long Shots – very low probability, very high pay-off. A bit like winning a lotto.

In the context of the famed BCG Matrix lookalike, they are the opposite of the dogs which are moribund – low or negative payoff, almost sureshot. Take a look at the picture below:

How did this realisation dawn on me?

In the course of our growth strategy work, the companies are in the fortunate position of having a lot of spare cash, and not enough viable projects.…

End of the year is near – many of our clients are in a comfortable position. They will make the quarter, make the annual budgets (some will even shoot past) and get their bonuses. The executives are planning a nice holiday break with their friends and family – just yesterday I was speaking to someone who is taking their family to Italy for a 3 week holiday that includes coast and skiing.…

This situation is not universal, though. Many other companies I know are scrambling to meet the budgets.…

Hanjin and Other Jinns Looming Over Global Supply Chains

‘There was a young girl from Nic’raguaHanjin - Wikimedia Commons

who smiled as she rode on a jaguar

they returned from the ride

with the young girl inside

and a smile on the face of the jaguar.’

–  Salman Rushdie, The Jaguar Smile

The collapse of South Korean shipping giant Hanjin has triggered furious analyses everywhere of the implications of the event. The biggest question, perhaps, is whether Hanjin is like the young girl from the famous limerick above, riding the jaguar of global trade smoothly until it gets eaten by the temperamental beast.…
