The 10 Biggest Organizing Mistakes (and How to Fix Them)

If you’ve ever felt like your home is always a mess no matter how hard you try, you’re not alone. The truth is, most people are making the same organizing mistakes over and over again. But don’t worry! I used to be a total slob, and once I figured out these simple fixes, my home became so much easier to keep clean. Let’s dive into the top 10 mistakes that are keeping your home messy—and how to fix them for good!

1. Perfectionism Paralysis

Believe it or not, perfectionists often have the messiest homes. Why? Because they want to do everything perfectly, which leads to procrastination. If you’re waiting for the “right time” to organize or deep clean, you’re setting yourself up for failure.

The Fix: Give yourself permission to do things badly! Skip the unnecessary steps—shove your PJs into a drawer instead of folding them, or put dishes away even if they’re not 100% dry. The goal is progress, not perfection.

2. Band-Aid Solutions

Many people try to “fix” their clutter by adding more storage—small bookshelves, extra dressers, hooks everywhere. But these Band-Aid solutions don’t address the real problem: too much stuff!

The Fix: Instead of adding more storage, look at your space as a whole. If your entryway lacks a closet, don’t rely on coat hooks and shelves—get an affordable wardrobe unit that actually solves the issue.

3. Organizing Before Decluttering

You cannot organize clutter. If you try, you’ll just end up sorting things you don’t even need into neat little bins—only for it to get messy again.

The Fix: Before you even think about organizing, do a ruthless declutter. Ask yourself: Am I keeping this, or is it leaving? That’s the only decision you need to make at first. Once you’ve minimized, then you can start organizing what’s left.

4. All-or-Nothing Thinking

Ever say, “I’ll clean when I have time to do it right”? That mindset leads to a never-ending mess. Life is busy, and waiting for a free weekend to organize your whole house just isn’t realistic.

The Fix: Embrace the 5-minute rule. You may not have time to deep clean the kitchen, but you can unload the dishwasher. Small tasks add up and keep your home from spiraling out of control.

5. Buying Containers First

Raise your hand if you’ve ever bought cute baskets or storage bins before decluttering—only to realize they don’t actually fit your needs. 🙋‍♀️

The Fix: Do not buy containers until you’ve decluttered and decided where things will go. Otherwise, you’ll just be adding to the clutter.

6. Doing It All Alone

If you’re trying to manage the entire house by yourself, you’re going to burn out. Your family lives in the home, so they should help maintain it too!

The Fix: Delegate! Kids can unload the dishwasher before screen time, and a robot vacuum can handle daily floor cleaning. The less on your plate, the easier it is to keep things tidy.

7. Overcomplicating Organizing Systems

If your organizing system is too detailed—like 10 labeled folders for different kinds of bills—you’re setting yourself up for failure.

The Fix: Keep it simple. Use broad categories instead of micro-sorting. Instead of a dozen bins for crafting supplies, have one for “paper” and one for “tools.” The simpler the system, the more likely you’ll stick to it.

8. Skipping Daily Maintenance

If you’re not doing daily resets, your mess will pile up. Skipping the dishes today means you’ll have a mountain of them tomorrow.

The Fix: Set alarms or reminders for quick 5-minute tidy-ups throughout the day. This trains your brain to put things away automatically, so messes don’t spiral out of control. If you’re not sure where to start, you can download my FREE Weekly Tidy Routine here.

9. Not Having a Memory Bin

Sentimental clutter is one of the hardest things to deal with. If you don’t have a designated place for keepsakes, they’ll end up mixed in with everyday clutter, making it impossible to declutter.

The Fix: Get a memory bin. Having a special box for sentimental items will give you the confidence to let go of other things without guilt.

10. Not Labeling Storage

Even if you have a great organizing system, it won’t work if no one else in your household knows where things go.

The Fix: Labels! Labeling shelves, bins, and drawers makes it easy for everyone to put things back in the right spot—no more guessing or junk piles.  If you need ready made labels, check out my complete label pack to create your own custom labels

Organizing your home doesn’t have to be overwhelming. By recognizing and fixing these common mistakes, you’ll create a space that’s easier to maintain and actually stays tidy.

Decluttering these 25 Things for Less Stress NOW!

Here are 25 things I am decluttering from my home and life in 2025. For me, this isn’t just about finding things to get rid of, it’s striving for a clutter-free home so I can have less stress, less mess, and more time and more self-love.

Personal Care & BeautyLotions & Beauty Products: Be honest—how many half-used bottles of lotion do you have? If it’s sticky, smells weird, or didn’t wow you, toss it.Old Mascara: If it’s dried out, clumpy, or you can’t remember when you bought it, it’s time to say goodbye.Unworn Clothes: If it’s been in your closet for over a year and you haven’t worn it, it’s probably not your style anymore.Clothes That No Longer Fit: Keeping those jeans that haven’t fit in years? Let them go and embrace the size you are now.Unworn Shoes: If they pinch, flop, or just don’t go with anything you wear anymore, it’s time to give them the boot.Home OrganizationMismatched Socks: Pair them up if you can. If not, it’s time to toss those single socks and free yourself from the frustration.Excess Home Décor: That vase you never display or wall art you’ve outgrown? Pass it along and make room for pieces you truly love.Duplicate Tools: Do you really need three tape measures? Keep one of each tool and donate or sell the extras.Old Towels & Linens: If they’re scratchy or threadbare, let them go. Many animal shelters will happily take them.Extra Bins & Baskets: Unused organizing supplies can easily become clutter themselves. Donate the ones that aren’t being put to good use.Kitchen ClutterExpired Pantry Items: Toss spices and canned goods that are past their prime or unrecognizable.Unused Kitchen Utensils: If you have multiples of the same tool (looking at you, spatulas), keep your favorites and donate the rest.Unhealthy Junk Food: If no one in your house likes it or it’s been sitting untouched for months, toss it guilt-free.Hobbies & InterestsUnused Craft Supplies: If you’ve been holding onto materials for a project you’ll never start, let them go. Someone else might find inspiration in them.Unfinished Projects: Either commit to finishing that knitting or DIY project this weekend or admit it’s not happening and move on.Books You’ll Never Read Again: Be honest—are you really going to reread that novel? Donate it and make room for something new.Tech & DigitalCords & Cables: That mystery cord you’ve been saving for “just in case”? If you don’t know what it’s for, let it go.Unused Tech Devices: Old phones, broken headphones, or outdated gadgets can be responsibly recycled to free up space.Unused Apps: Scroll through your phone and delete apps you haven’t touched in months. Your phone will feel lighter!Unused Subscriptions: Take a few minutes to check for forgotten subscriptions and cancel the ones you’re not using.Sentimental & MiscellaneousPromotional Freebies: That random mug or pen from a conference? If it’s not adding value, donate or recycle it.Gift Bags & Wrapping Supplies: Keep the nice ones and toss the wrinkled or torn ones to tidy your stash.Old Notes & To-Do Lists: Outdated planners, sticky notes, and scribbled ideas are just cluttering your desk and mind. Toss them.Sentimental Items Without Meaning: Not every sentimental item needs to stay forever. Let go of anything that doesn’t truly spark joy.Broken Items: If it’s been broken and unfixed for months, it’s likely time to toss it. Let go of the guilt and make room for working items.

Kitchen Organizing Made Easy: How to Perfectly Zone Your Kitchen

When it comes to organizing your kitchen, the key to creating a functional space isn’t about spending a fortune on fancy gadgets—it’s about zoning. And all you need to get started are some Post-it notes and a pen.

The Importance of Kitchen Zoning

Zoning your kitchen is the secret weapon of professional organizers. It ensures that everything you use daily is stored where it makes the most sense, minimizing steps and making cooking, cleaning, and meal prep much faster.

Here’s how I recently helped Krista transform her newly renovated kitchen.  (If you love a good room makeover, earlier we did an EPIC makeover in Krista’s bedroom – click here to see the transformation 🤩)

Step 1: Identify Your Valuable Real Estate

Start by understanding that your kitchen’s most valuable real estate is between waist and eye level. This is where you should store the items you use daily. Reserve those top drawers, lower shelves, and easily accessible cabinets for the essentials like:

Plates and glassesUtensilsSpicesPots and pans

For example, Krista had spices stored above the sink, which required a daily trek across the kitchen while cooking. It made sense to relocated them to a cabinet right next to the stove for easy access.

Step 2: Kitchen Organizing Using Post-it Notes

Write down the names of items you use most frequently on Post-it notes and place them where they should ideally go and where it would make your life the easiest. Don’t worry if it’s not perfect right away—this process is flexible and allows you to tweak as needed.

For instance:

Everyday dishes and glasses went in the cabinet above the dishwasher for easy unloading.Utensils like spatulas and potato mashers were relocated to drawers beside the stove.Tupperware and food storage were moved to the island, where meal prep typically happens.Step 3: The “Stuff Shuffle”

Once your zones are planned, it’s time to reshuffle. This process can feel overwhelming, so there are two approaches:

One cabinet at a time: Move items from a single cabinet into their new zones, filling the empty space with relocated items. All at once: Empty out multiple cabinets and redistribute everything to its new home in one go.

We opted to tackle Krista’s entire kitchen in a day, but if you’re short on time, breaking it into smaller steps works just as well. Start with just a drawer, a cabinet and then continue when you’ve got more time.

Step 4: Declutter as You Go

This is the perfect opportunity to declutter. Use Dana K. White’s “container concept”—keep only what fits comfortably in each drawer or cabinet. If it doesn’t fit, it doesn’t stay. Think about the things lurking in your cabinets and drawers that you no longer need or want and get rid of it!

For example, we downsized Krista’s utensil drawer from 50 spatulas to a manageable selection of her most-used tools.

Step 5: Create Activity Zones

Think beyond daily essentials and consider how you use your kitchen for specific activities. For example: Instead of just “plates” or “canned goods” here’s the activity zones we created for Krista.  By setting it up this way, we helped make her kitchen organization more functional:

A coffee station at the bar with teas, coffees, and drink prep essentials.A baking zone with mixing bowls, measuring cups, and bakeware.A lunch prep zone with sandwich bags and food storage in the island.

By simply zoning your kitchen, you can transform it into a space that saves you time and energy. Remember, the goal isn’t perfection—it’s functionality.

Decluttering for Beginners

Decluttering for beginners doesn’t have to be overwhelming or stressful. Whether it’s your first day or you’re on day 1,567, the process remains the same: follow these three simple steps to see success.

Step 1: Trash Bag Therapy

Trash bag therapy is the first step to decluttering success, and it’s exactly what it sounds like: grab a trash bag and start hunting for trash. This method works because it’s an easy and guilt-free way to get rid of stuff that you don’t need.  AND it’s an instant dopamine boost that usually gives you the motivation to keep going.

Why Start with Trash?

Ease Into Decluttering: Starting with trash is a form of exposure therapy. It helps reduce the anxiety and fear associated with decluttering by focusing on easy, non-emotional decisions.Boost Momentum: Clearing out obvious trash primes your brain for bigger decluttering tasks. It’s a quick win that sets the tone for more challenging steps.

What Counts as Trash?

Scraps of paper or old notesBroken cables or items you’ll never repairEmpty containers and wrappersStale food or outdated pantry itemsStep 2: Shift Your Mindset

Decluttering isn’t just about clearing physical items; it’s also about changing how you think about your belongings.

Many of us tell ourselves things like:

“I’m bad at decluttering.”“It’s too hard to let go.”“I don’t want to be wasteful.”

These thoughts create resistance and make decluttering feel harder than it is. Instead, replace negative thoughts with positive and empowering statements to yourself, such as:

“I deserve a clutter-free home.”“I am in control of my stuff.”“My peace of mind is more important than holding onto unused items.”

Even if you don’t believe it at first, fake it until you make it. The more you repeat these mantras, the more natural they’ll feel. If you need a little extra motivational boost, have a listen to my Podcast Episode: How to be an Anti-Perfectionist.

Stop Giving Power to “Stuff”

One of the things I like to remind beginners (and everyone actually) is that your your belongings are just objects. They don’t have feelings, and they shouldn’t control you. Let go of guilt or hesitation by focusing on what’s truly important: your happiness and peace of mind.

Step 3: Donations

Once you’ve cleared out the trash and shifted your mindset, it’s time to tackle donations. Look for items you no longer use, need, or love. This step isn’t about pulling everything out and creating a mess; it’s about being intentional and selective.  If you’re stuck on where to start, here’s a few items you can donate today:

Clothes that don’t fit or make you feel goodToys, tools, or gadgets you haven’t used in monthsDuplicates or items you forgot you owned

And while you’re going through your items, it’s important to be honest with yourself and ask these questions as you declutter:

“Do I love this?”“Do I use this?”“Would I buy this again today?”

If the answer is no, it’s time to let it go.

Decluttering for beginners starts with these three steps.  It’s not about just decluttering your home—you’re retraining your brain to see decluttering as a positive and manageable task.  Starting with trash builds momentum, shifting your mindset makes the process emotionally easier, and hunting for donations clears space for what truly matters.

So grab a trash bag, set your mantras, and start hunting for items to donate. A clutter-free home is just three steps away!

Decluttering and Organizing: An Amazing Home Makeover!

In this home makeover we show how even the busiest families can create a space they love.  Meet Sarah, a hardworking nurse and mother of two, who opened her doors to us .  She needed a little help to tackle the clutter and find practical solutions for her home.

Meet Sarah:  Our home makeover recipient

Sarah’s life is a whirlwind. With a five-year-old daughter, a two-year-old son, and both her and her husband working as  nurses, it’s no surprise her home felt chaotic. She described it best: “My house is in constant chaos mode. My mind is cluttered, my house is cluttered, my life is cluttered.” Sarah’s goal? To create a home that feels functional and joyful—a space her family can truly love.

First Impressions: The House Tour

Walking through Sarah’s home, a few key challenges stood out:

1. The EntrancewayShoes and coats piled up without a clear system. The only closet was blocked by a chair, making it impractical to use. There was no designated spot for kids’ toys, leaving items scattered everywhere.2. The Living RoomA multipurpose space that served as a living room, dining room, hair station, and workout room.No proper zones for toys or family activities.Piles of items with no clear homes.3. The KitchenThe kitchen table had become a “dropping station” for keys, bags, bills, and more.Cabinets lacked organization, making it hard to find items.Important documents and kids’ schoolwork were scattered on the counters.Diagnosing the Problem: Why Sarah’s Home Felt Overwhelming

Sarah’s biggest issue wasn’t an excess of stuff—it was the lack of designated zones and practical storage solutions. Without clear homes for her family’s belongings, clutter took over. The solution? Create easy-to-maintain systems that fit Sarah’s “ladybug” organizing style: quick, out-of-sight storage that keeps surfaces tidy.

Step 1: Decluttering the Trash

The first step was simple but impactful: tackle the trash. Armed with garbage bags, Sarah and her helper moved through the house, tossing out dried markers, expired food, broken toys, and other obvious trash. This “trash hunt” was cathartic and set the stage for deeper decluttering.

Quick Tip: Don’t overthink it! If something is broken, expired, or unloved, let it go. It’s okay to say, “I’ll do better in the future.”

Step 2: Organizing the Kitchen

With the trash gone, it was time to make the kitchen functional:

Snack Zones: Create a designated spot for kids’ snacks that’s easy for them to reach.Spice Storage: Use pull-down bins to keep spices accessible and prevent rummaging through cluttered shelves.Paper Piles: Set up a system for important documents, like a simple file box or wall organizer.Essentials Within Reach: Group commonly used items together and store them near where they’re needed.Step 3: Reclaiming the Living Room

The living room needed to serve the family better:

Toy Storage: Add bins or baskets for toys, making cleanup quick and easy for the kids.Decluttering Large Items: Move the Peloton bike to the basement to create a dedicated workout area and free up family space.Fresh Decor: Let go of the dead plant that was giving off “bummer vibes” and add a touch of greenery with a low-maintenance alternative.Step 4: Zoning and Simplifying

By dividing the house into zones, Sarah’s home gained a sense of order:

Entrance Zone: Hooks and a small shoe rack by the door made it easy for the family to store everyday items.Living Zone: The living room became a cozy space for family time, with hidden storage for toys and games.Kitchen Zone: Clear counter space and functional storage turned the kitchen into an efficient workspace.Home Makeover Day 1 Results

Decluttering makes a difference!  By the end of the first day decluttering, Sarah’s home was unrecognizable—in the best way.  She now has a space that feels calmer, functional, and a little more tailored to her family’s needs.  But we weren’t finished yet!

Home Makeover Day Two

When I first walked into Sarah’s home, it was clear that she was overwhelmed. Piles of paperwork, cluttered counters, and a kitchen table functioning as a catch-all screamed for a system that would bring peace and order. By day two, we were ready to take the next step: turning her house into a home.

Starting in the Kitchen: Small Systems, Big Changes

Tackling Paper Clutter The kitchen counters were buried under paper—bills, kids’ artwork, and miscellaneous memories. The solution? A simple two-box system. One box for incoming bills and paperwork that needs attention, and another for sentimental items like artwork, which can be transferred later to long-term memory bins.

Decluttering Drawers Sarah’s kitchen had two junk drawers—far too many! By adding $10 worth of drawer dividers, we transformed chaos into clarity. Now everything has a place, from scissors to rubber bands.

Creating a Smoothie Station Sarah’s family loves smoothies, so I decanted ingredients into clear containers for easy access and freshness. This small, intentional space not only looks great but also makes mornings faster and more enjoyable.

Organizing the Pantry The pantry was a mix of empty boxes and misplaced items. By zoning each shelf and using containers for items like rice and snacks, we maximized space and functionality. We also created a kid-friendly snack zone for healthy options within their reach.

Establishing a Drop Zone Phones, keys, and AirPods always seemed to pile up in random spots. A simple Dollar Store tray now keeps everything in one place. Setting up systems where things naturally get dropped makes maintaining order effortless.

Brightening the Living Room

Sarah’s living room was the first thing guests saw when entering, but it was cluttered with toys and lacked storage. Here’s how we tackled it:

Functional Coffee Table We brought in a coffee table with built-in storage and added baskets to organize toys. Now, after playtime, everything tucks away neatly.

Decorating with Heart A new rug and artwork gave the room a cozy, inviting feel. Accessories like lamps and throw pillows made it a space that feels like home.

Memory Storage Made Simple

Instead of expecting Sarah to run to the basement every time she wanted to save a memory (like little artwork, school mementos, photos etc.) , we added a small, accessible memory bin near the kitchen. When it fills up, she can transfer the contents to the larger memory bins downstairs. It’s a quick and easy system that works with her lifestyle.

Sarah’s Reaction

When Sarah saw her newly organized home, her face lit up. “It feels brighter,” she said. “It feels homey.” From the counters to the pantry, everything now has a place. Even her kids’ lunch bags and snacks are neatly organized, making mornings smoother for the entire family.

Most importantly, Sarah can finally say, “I love my home.”

Tips for Tackling Your Own Clutter

If Sarah’s story resonates with you, here are some quick takeaways:

Start Small: Begin with obvious trash or one area, like the kitchen table or junk drawer.Create Zones: Assign specific purposes to each space in your home.Keep It Simple: Use easy-to-maintain systems that work for your organizing style.Let Go: Don’t hold onto items out of guilt or habit. If it doesn’t serve you, it’s time to say goodbye.

With these steps, you can transform your own space into a home you love—just like Sarah did!

One SECRET for Insane Productivity – Crush your Goals!

If resolutions leave you feeling stressed or overwhelmed, here’s one simple way to get more productive!  I call it the North Star Planning Method.  It’s simple, flexible, and perfect for anyone who feels like long to-do lists just don’t work—especially if you have ADHD or find it hard to stay focused.

You can get started by downloading the FREE North Star Planner and Workbook right here.

What Is the North Star Planning Method?

This method has just two simple steps:

Pick Your North Star. Your North Star is your big, exciting goal. It’s not just a list of tasks but something meaningful that really fires you up. For example, instead of saying, “declutter the house,” your North Star could be, “create a clean, peaceful home I love.”Take One Small Step Every Day. Each day, focus on one tiny, doable task that brings you closer to your North Star. It’s not a giant to-do list. It’s one thing—just one—that you can actually finish. Why This Method Works

The North Star method is simple and easy to stick with, which is why it’s so effective. Here’s why it’s a game-changer:

Keeps It Simple: Instead of juggling a million things, you focus on just one goal.Builds Momentum: Completing one small task every day adds up fast—you’ll feel progress without the pressure.Works With Your Life: It’s flexible and doesn’t require you to change everything overnight.

Step 1: Find Your North Star

Not sure what your North Star should be? Here’s an easy way to figure it out:

Write It All Down: Take a few minutes to brainstorm all your dreams and goals—big or small.Highlight What Excites You: Circle the ones that really get you excited.Look for a Theme: Chances are, your goals connect to a bigger idea. That’s your North Star.

For example, if you’ve been dreaming about decluttering, organizing, and deep cleaning, your North Star might be something like, “create a stress-free, organized home.”

Step 2: Do One Thing Every Day

Once you’ve picked your North Star, break it down into tiny, bite-sized steps. Each day, choose one thing you can tackle. It should be small enough to finish in 10–15 minutes.

Examples for an Organized Home:Declutter five items.Organize the junk drawer.Spend 10 minutes tidying the living room.

The key is to keep it simple. You don’t have to fix everything in a day. Just keep moving forward.

Why This Method Stands Out

What makes the North Star method so great is that it doesn’t overwhelm you. Instead, it helps you focus and stay consistent. As the saying goes, “How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time.” This method works the same way: one small step every day until you hit your big goal.

Bonus Tip: Stay Inspired

Surround yourself with things that keep you excited about your North Star. Watch YouTube videos, listen to podcasts, or follow people who are crushing similar goals. The more you stay inspired, the easier it is to keep going!
