Organizing Solutions for Your Messiest Spaces

Do you ever feel stuck with a messy room you’re unsure how to fix? In this video, I’m virtually stepping into my subscribers’ cluttered spaces—from living rooms piled high with toys, to cramped homeschool corners, to laundry rooms doubling as craft central—and giving them total organizing makeovers!

Britney’s Living Room: A Play Space That Works

Britney reached out for help organizing her living room, which also serves as a play area for her five-year-old son, who has cerebral palsy. Her main concerns? She wanted an open space where he could move around easily and a designated area for herself near the fireplace.

The Challenges:Lack of defined zones for play and relaxationSafety concerns due to her son’s mobility needsOverwhelming toy clutterThe Solution:Clear Pathways for Mobility – We removed bulky furniture, including a large train table that dominated the space, and replaced it with a smaller, more accessible table.Functional Storage – Those flimsy toy bins from big-box stores? They had to go! Instead, we introduced a low-to-the-ground storage system, making it easier for her son to access his toys safely.Defined Spaces – One side of the room became a kid-friendly zone, while the other was transformed into a cozy, adult-friendly area by the fireplace.3D Visualization – We used HomeStyler.com (a free interior design tool) to bring this vision to life, making it easy for Britney to see the transformation before making changes.Amanda’s Homeschool Room: A Functional Learning Space for Six Kids

Homeschooling six children is no small feat, and Amanda’s biggest struggle was keeping the space organized and functional. Despite her best efforts, the room always ended up cluttered and chaotic.

The Challenges:Limited storage for school supplies and booksA layout that didn’t support active learningNot enough open space for group activitiesThe Solution:Maximizing Wall Storage – We incorporated staggered shelving and floating shelves to keep books and supplies off the floor but still easily accessible.Rearranging Desks for Better Flow – Amanda’s large desk was moved under the window, freeing up more floor space for group activities like circle time and hands-on learning.Creating Individual Workspaces – Each child received their own desk with storage in between, allowing them to focus while also keeping materials organized.A 3D Room Makeover – Using HomeStyler, we designed a space with modular storage and a well-defined layout that balances study and play.Julie’s Multi-Use Room: Office, Music Studio & Gaming Space

Julie and her husband needed a shared space that worked for both of them—he needed a functional home office (with a gaming area), while she needed a space to teach music lessons. The challenge? Finding a way to keep the room organized while meeting both their needs.

The Challenges:No proper storage for books and music materialsA cluttered layout that made it hard to access essential itemsNo clear division between work and playThe Solution:Dividing the Space Visually – We added a large bookcase in the center of the room to separate the office and gaming area from the music lesson space.Utilizing Vertical Storage – Floating shelves along the walls provided storage for books, lesson materials, and decor without taking up floor space.Decluttering & Reorganizing – By relocating less-used items and getting rid of unnecessary clutter, we created a room that functions for both work and leisure.Smart Design Tools – With HomeStyler, we tested different layouts before making changes, ensuring that the final design met both their needs.Anita’s Bedroom Storage DilemmaThe Challenge

Anita’s bedroom had become a storage locker. She used it for extra storage, her granddaughter played there, and she worked on her computer in the same space. Every night, she felt frustrated about the mess but didn’t know where to start. She had no garbage clutter, but the layout wasn’t working.

Solution:Keep the bed placement due to the sloping ceiling—it’s in the perfect spot to avoid head bumps.Ditch the dresser that wasn’t functional and replace it with cube shelving along one side of the room for organized storage.Use floating shelves above the cube storage to maximize every inch of space.Keep the L-shaped desk layout since it allows for printer and paper storage while making the most of the available space.

With these changes, Anita now has a streamlined, organized, and multi-purpose room that works for both storage and daily use.

Kristen’s Cluttered Entryway & Dining RoomThe Challenge

Kristen’s entryway had no real storage system, leading to jackets and shoes piling up. Her dining room had turned into a multipurpose space for pantry items, donations, and her husband’s home office—creating visual chaos.

The SolutionsReplace the small desk in the entryway with a proper mudroom-style storage area for jackets and shoes.Reevaluate the need for two tables. Since Kristen primarily eats in the dining room, removing the kitchen table allows space for a stand-up pantry system to store food more effectively.Declutter donations immediately. Moving them to the car for drop-off clears valuable space instantly.Install upper cabinets or floating shelves in the dining area to store food in a visually pleasing and accessible way.Swap the decorative bench for functional storage. A closed storage unit keeps items neat while giving her husband a designated workspace.

These changes create a much more functional, organized home that works for Kristen’s family’s busy lifestyle.

Tina’s Laundry Room Craft ChaosThe Challenge:

Tina’s laundry room doubled as a craft space, but clutter made it impossible to work there. She ended up crafting at the kitchen table, which wasn’t ideal. She needed a way to store supplies and create a functional workspace.

Solutions:Declutter first! Getting rid of unused supplies creates space for better organization.Extend shelving to the ceiling for maximum storage.Add a work island on wheels so it can be moved when needed but still provides a dedicated crafting space.Use pegboards above the desk to store craft tools and supplies efficiently.Upgrade the laundry area with a cabinet above the machines and a rod for hanging clothes.

By making these small tweaks, Tina now has a well-organized, dual-purpose room that functions for both laundry and crafting.

Fitting Rebecca’s Entire Home Into 400 Square Feet!

Rebecca reached out with a major design challenge—she had just built a small home and was moving in within the week. The entire floor plan is only 672 square feet, and that includes everything: a sunroom, entrance, kitchen, laundry room, office, and closet.

The Challenge:

Rebecca’s main living area had just 400 square feet to fit a double bed, an office, a kitchen, a dining area, a living space with a TV, and an entrance with coat storage. That’s a lot to fit into such a small space!

To make things even trickier, Rebecca had already mapped out a rough floor plan, but I was concerned about the flow and functionality of the space. The way she had positioned her bed created some major pinch points, limiting movement and making the space feel even smaller.

Solutions:Repositioning the Bed for Better FlowOriginally, Rebecca had placed the bed in a way that only allowed access from the foot, which wasn’t practical. Plus, it blocked the flow around the sofa.Instead, I rotated the bed and tucked it into a corner, creating a better traffic flow and more accessibility. To add privacy and storage, I placed a small bookcase at the foot of the bed—this way, the bed isn’t the first thing you see when entering the home.Maximizing Seating & Dining SpaceA small-space struggle is finding a comfortable place to eat that isn’t just a kitchen island. Sometimes, eating at an island feels too informal or uncomfortable, especially when hosting guests.I suggested a bench against the wall with a small bistro table and two chairs. This setup allows for flexible seating that doesn’t block movement. The chairs can be moved into the living area when extra seating is needed!Creating a Multi-Functional Living AreaA compact apartment-sized sofa was the perfect fit, leaving room for a small kitchen island if she wanted one.The desk was tucked neatly into a corner, giving her an organized workspace without taking over the room.A designated entryway with hooks and shoe storage helped keep the entrance clutter-free while still functional.

If you’re feeling stuck in your cluttered space, remember: ✅ Declutter first to see what you truly need. ✅ Maximize vertical space with shelving and wall storage. ✅ Use multi-functional furniture to make the most of your space. ✅ Relocate items that don’t belong (like donations in the trunk instead of the floor!).

A few small adjustments can completely transform your home, making it more functional and beautiful!

Busting Common House Cleaning Myths: What Really Works and What Doesn’t

When it comes to cleaning our homes, we often rely on advice passed down through generations or quick hacks we’ve seen online. But not all cleaning tips are created equal! Some are outright myths that can waste your time—or worse, damage your home. Let’s bust some of the most common house cleaning myths and set the record straight.

General Cleaning Myths1. Myth: More cleaner equals more clean

Truth: Using too much cleaner can actually leave a residue that attracts more dirt, making surfaces even filthier over time. Less is more when it comes to cleaning solutions.

2. Myth: Vinegar cleans everything

Truth: While vinegar is great for stainless steel and glass, it’s too acidic for porous surfaces like stone countertops and rubber seals. Plus, it makes everything smell like pickles!

3. Myth: Bleach cleans everything

Truth: Bleach disinfects, but it doesn’t remove dirt or grease. Always clean with soap and water first before disinfecting.

4. Myth: Hot water is necessary to kill germs

Truth: Water has to be over 140°F and sit for at least five minutes to kill germs. That’s hot enough to burn your skin! Instead, use disinfectants like hydrogen peroxide or diluted bleach.

5. Myth: Feather dusters remove dust

Truth: Feather dusters just spread dust around. Use a Swiffer duster or a damp microfiber cloth to actually trap and remove dust.

6. Myth: Air fresheners eliminate bad smells

Truth: Air fresheners only mask odours. For real odour removal, use baking soda, carbon filters, or unscented Febreze, which neutralizes odour-causing particles.

7. Myth: Disinfecting wipes always work

Truth: Disinfecting wipes only work if the surface stays wet for at least five minutes. Most people wipe too quickly, spreading germs instead of killing them.

8. Myth: Mopping with super hot water is best for floors

Truth: Hot water can damage wood and laminate floors. Stick with cold or room-temperature water to preserve your flooring.

9. Myth: More scrubbing equals cleaner surfaces

Truth: Over-scrubbing can wear down finishes on tubs, toilets, and countertops. Instead, use soft abrasion and gentle cleaners.

10. Myth: Magic Erasers clean everything

Truth: Magic Erasers can remove paint and strip surfaces. Use with caution, especially on delicate finishes.

11. Myth: Vacuuming every day ruins carpet

Truth: Vacuuming daily actually extends the life of your carpet and reduces dust buildup. Carpet manufacturers recommend frequent vacuuming!

Bedroom & Laundry Myths12. Myth: Make your bed as soon as you wake up

Truth: Letting your bed air out for at least 30 minutes helps prevent moisture buildup, which can attract dust mites and bacteria.

13. Myth: Hot water is necessary for washing clothes

Truth: Most modern detergents work better in cold water. Washing in cold saves energy and keeps clothes in better shape.

14. Myth: More detergent equals cleaner clothes

Truth: Using too much detergent leaves a residue on your clothes, making them dirtier and sticky over time.

15. Myth: Fabric softener is a must for towels

Truth: Fabric softener coats towels, making them less absorbent. Use a cup of vinegar instead to keep them soft and absorbent.

16. Myth: Dryer sheets are harmless

Truth: Dryer sheets leave a film on your lint trap, increasing fire risk. Clean your lint trap regularly if you use them.

Bathroom Myths17. Myth: Toilet bowl cleaner can clean everything

Truth: Toilet bowl cleaner is too harsh for most surfaces and can damage finishes. Use it only in the toilet!

18. Myth: If you shower daily, you don’t need to clean the shower

Truth: Showering doesn’t clean your shower! Mold and bacteria still build up, so give it a weekly scrub.

19. Myth: You need separate cleaners for everything

Truth: Multipurpose cleaners work just as well for most surfaces. No need for 10 different sprays!

20. Myth: Toilet water is dirtier than your sink

Truth: Your sink can be just as dirty, if not dirtier! Disinfect both regularly.

21. Myth: Flushing with the lid up doesn’t matter

Truth: Flushing with the lid up spreads bacteria into the air and onto nearby surfaces. Keep that lid closed!

Kitchen Myths22. Myth: Sponges are fine if they look clean

Truth: Sponges are germ magnets. Disinfect them regularly by microwaving for one minute or soaking in boiling water.

23. Myth: Dishwashers clean themselves

Truth: Food particles and grease build up in dishwashers. Clean the filter and run a cleaning cycle with vinegar or a dishwasher cleaner.

24. Myth: Wooden cutting boards are unsanitary

Truth: Wood has natural antibacterial properties. Just clean them well and let them dry completely.

25. Myth: Handling raw chicken

Truth: Washing raw chicken spreads bacteria. Cooking it thoroughly is the only way to kill germs.

Now that we’ve busted these 25 cleaning myths, you can clean smarter, not harder!

Your Most Popular Organizing Questions… SOLVED with Real-Life Tips!

Organizing can be a challenge, especially when you’re dealing with a small space or limited storage options. But fear not! There are plenty of creative ways to maximize every inch of your home, even on a budget. In this post, we’ll dive into some of the most frequently asked organizing questions and provide practical solutions that you can easily implement in your home.

Q: How to Organize a Small Space or a Room with Limited Storage?

When you’re working with a small space or lack of storage, you need to get creative. Here are some tips for organizing efficiently:

1. Use Vertical Space

One of the most effective ways to maximize storage in a small space is by taking advantage of vertical storage. Consider installing open shelving that goes all the way to the ceiling or as close as possible. This will help you store items that you don’t need immediate access to but still want easy visibility of.

2. Use the Back of Doors

Don’t overlook the back of doors as valuable storage areas! Products like this over door rack are perfect for storing items without worrying about them falling off.

3. Under the Bed

Under your bed is one of the most underused storage spaces in any home. Invest in rolling containers that can slide in and out easily, allowing you to store everything from extra blankets to seasonal clothing.

4. Use Shelving Above Existing Furniture

Maximize the space you already have by adding shelving above your existing furniture. For example, install shelves above a desk or dresser to increase storage while keeping things accessible.

5. Consider Alternatives

If your space is really tight, you might want to ditch traditional furniture for more versatile options. Try replacing a bulky dresser with an IKEA cube unit. These units provide storage at the bottom for your clothes while offering additional space on top for even more items.

6. Double-Duty Furniture

Opt for furniture that serves more than one purpose. A coffee table with storage, end tables with compartments, or even a storage ottoman can help you keep things organized without sacrificing style.

Q: How to Organize When You Each Have Different Organizing Styles?

Living with people who have different organizing preferences can be tricky.

When mixing organizing styles – the secret is to make sure you prioritize visual organization  AND less-detailed systems.   So for instance if you’re a bee living with a ladybug – the trick will be to find systems that are visual (for the bee) BUT less detailed to suit the ladybug style.  Visual organizing solutions like hooks and bulletin boards, help ensure that everyone can see and easily access their items without forgetting about them.

For family members who don’t mind seeing their things organized but want the ease of tossing items quickly, opt for large containers with no lids. If you want to create a cohesive look, make sure the containers are the same color or material, and add labels for a visually pleasing and functional system.  For more storage solutions based on your organizing styles click here.

Q: How to deal with Digital Clutter?

Digital clutter is often harder to manage than physical clutter because you can’t actually see or touch it. While it may seem overwhelming, here’s a few quick ways to deal with it:  Instead of sorting your digital clutter into tiny categories, create broad ones to make it simple. For example, all of your photos can go into one category per year.  eg. 2025, 2024 etc.  These broader categories will make it easier to find (without having to spend hours creating micro-categories). It’s a quick win!

Secondly, using programs like Lightroom to automatically name and organize your files, making it easier to find what you need quickly.

Q: How do you let go of Emotional Clutter After a Loss?

Going through the belongings of a loved one who has passed can be emotionally difficult. Here’s how to cope while staying organized:

1. Create a Memory Bin

Start by designating a single container to store all the items that hold sentimental value. This can be a memory bin where you place the things that bring you the most comfort and remind you of the person.

2. Memory Journal

Along with the items, write down memories associated with those belongings in a journal. This helps preserve the sentimental value without the clutter.

3. Take Photos of Important Items

Sometimes, photographs can hold just as much meaning as physical items. Snap pictures of the items that mean the most to you and store them digitally.

Q: How to Handle a Messy House When Others Won’t Help?

Living with people who are unwilling to help with the clutter can be frustrating. Here are some strategies to keep your space organized while encouraging others to pitch in:

1. Focus on Your Own Space First

Before you focus on getting others to help, start by organizing your own stuff. When everyone sees that you’re leading by example, they may be more inclined to join in.

2. Try the Cookie Method

The Cookie Method involves praising your family members for small contributions, no matter how minor they seem. For example, if someone puts their dish in the dishwasher, praise them enthusiastically. Over time, they’ll begin associating these actions with positive reinforcement, which encourages them to help more.

Q: How can I Help Others Declutter?

Helping someone else—especially aging parents or kids who hold onto everything—can be a delicate process. One of the best ways to  gently guide them to declutter is by using the Yes/No Method.

Here’s how it works:   Let the person know they don’t have to do anything except answer “yes” or “no” to whether they want to keep something. This simple system helps them make quick decisions without feeling overwhelmed. Celebrate small wins and continue with the process until they start to see how freeing it is to let go.

Q: How to Declutter when Downsizing or Moving?

If you’re in the process of downsizing or moving, here’s three ways to help you quickly declutter:

1. Rent a Dumpster

One of the most motivating ways to declutter quickly is by renting a dumpster for a weekend. This allows you to toss out anything you no longer need without the pressure of having to keep it for a move.

2. Schedule a Pickup

Contact a charity to pick up your donations. Knowing that they’ll come to your home to take away your items can make it easier to part with things, especially larger items like furniture.

3. Auction House

If you have valuable items you’d like to get rid of, consider working with an auction house. They’ll often pick up items from your home and sell them for you, giving you a percentage of the proceeds.

Q: Tips for Organizing on a Small Budget?

Organizing doesn’t have to cost a fortune. Here are some budget-friendly tips to get your home in order without breaking the bank:

1. First Things First

The key to organizing on a budget is to declutter first. Once you’ve pared down your belongings, organizing becomes much easier and requires fewer storage bins.

2. Use What You Have

When I first started organizing, I used things like diaper boxes and old shipping boxes. If you need to make them more appealing, cover them in contact paper or use inexpensive dollar store options.

3. Shelving

For budget-friendly shelving, try stores like Walmart or Amazon. Walmart’s Mainstays bookshelves are an inexpensive way to add storage to a small space without breaking your budget.

Organizing your home doesn’t have to be an overwhelming task, even with limited space or a tight budget. By utilizing vertical space, making your furniture do double duty, and using creative storage solutions, you can create a more organized and functional living environment.

Get It Together with Cas: The Tough Love Edition

Buckle up, Buttercup, because today we’re talking tough love and small steps to BIG changes and create instant motivation. We’re going to tackle how to get your life together without feeling like you’re climbing Mount Everest – I’m sharing my favourite shortcuts and hacks that have seriously changed my life. Sound good? Let’s dive right in!

1. Give Yourself a Reality Check – “NO ONE IS COMING TO RESCUE YOU”. We have the home, (body, relationship, finances etc) that we are willing to put up with. Don’t like where you are right now? Change it. Only you have the empower, so put on that cape and save your own damn self.

2. Break Big Goals into 5-Minute Goals – Micro Commitments are the secret. Train your brain to stop the “all or nothing” mentality by focusing on tiny 5-minute tasks.

3. Daily Brain Dump – Every morning write down all the things you want to get done and then circle the top three. Out of those top three, star the ONE that is NON-NEGOTIABLE and must get done that day.

4. Try Hypnosis! I’m using an app called Kure and it’s been helpful! Change your brain just by listening. 5. Create a Vision Board – Pick a few goals and dreams (make sure they are in the realm of possibility) and create a daily visual reminder! I have a FREE vision board template here: https://clutterbug.me/products/digital-vision-board-templates

6. Get an Accountability Buddy! Schedule a weekly date through Zoom, a phone call or an in-person meeting and body double with someone while you get stuff done together!

7. Get in a Win before 10:00am – Do a small thing that feels like an accomplishment before 10:00 am – Examples: Make your bed, write a to-do list, stretch for 10 minutes.

8. Habit Stacking – Do a new tiny habit at the same time as you do an old habit – Example: Write a daily to-do list while your morning coffee brews or take your vitamins when you brush your teeth.

9. Make a Power Playlist – Make a playlist with all the songs that fire you up!

10. Borrow Motivation – Watch and listen to FIRED UP people and borrow some of their passion and fierce motivation. Here is a good one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f4KsEUiw3gA

11. Nightly Gratitude Journal – I know…don’t roll your eyes, just try it.

How to Read your Clutter and Stay Organized for Good!

Your clutter isn’t the bad guy—it’s actually trying to help you! When I go into a client’s home, I need to see the mess to understand exactly how to set up the perfect organizing system. Your clutter is like a roadmap, showing you where and how you need to organize. In this post, I’ll teach you how to read your clutter so you can create a home that stays tidy all the time.

1. Your Clutter Shows You Where Things Naturally Belong

Take a look at where you naturally pile things up. If your kitchen counter is covered in paper clutter, you need a designated paper station right there. If cords, cables, and devices are scattered in one area, set up a charging station right there. The secret to long-term success is placing organizational systems where you naturally drop things.

2. Your Clutter Reveals What’s Important to You

The spaces with the most clutter hold the things you love most. If you have stacks of books everywhere, you’re a book lover—so create a cozy book nook. If craft supplies are scattered across your dining room table, set up an art station in that space. Your clutter tells you what matters to you and exactly where to create a home for it.

3. Your Clutter Defines Your Organizing Style

Are your everyday items (toothbrush, hairbrush, makeup) always sitting on the counter? You’re likely a visual organizer and need open, easy-access storage. Peek inside your drawers—if they’re jumbled, you might prefer looser organization styles. Understanding how you naturally store things helps you design a system that works for you.

4. Your Clutter Helps You Experiment with Organizing Systems

Your clutter also tells you what isn’t working. If you set up a filing system for paper but still pile papers elsewhere, try a stacking paper tray instead. If your keys keep getting lost, test a hook, then a tray, and see what sticks. The right system is the one that keeps things tidy with minimal effort.

5. Your Clutter Highlights Storage Issues

If shoes pile up at the door, your family probably won’t put them in a closet. Instead, add a simple shoe organizer right where they take them off. If small items like keys and wallets clutter your entryway, a drawer organizer or decorative bowl can solve the problem. Work with your habits instead of against them.

6. Your Clutter Shows What’s Overwhelming You

Too many dirty dishes in the sink? You might need to declutter your kitchen. Piles of dirty laundry? It’s time to purge your closet. If toys are taking over your living room, you probably need fewer toys. Let your clutter guide you to what needs a reset.

Ever catch yourself feeling “meh” about the future—like you just can’t see past tomorrow? It might be something called “horizonlessness,” and we’re diving in headfirst! In this episode, I’m sharing insights from a fascinating chat between Mel Robbins and Dr. Aditi Nehrukar that will have you going, “Aha… so that’s why!” Discover how the pandemic rewired our brains to focus on immediate survival instead of tomorrow’s dreams, and why it’s completely normal to feel stuck.

But don’t worry—we’re not staying stuck. We’ll talk about tiny, doable steps to get your zest back, from embracing small daily victories (hello, clean kitchen sink!) to sneakily scheduling in those guilt-free moments of “me time.” If you’ve been searching for a spark to reignite your excitement about what’s on the horizon, this episode is your matchstick. So press play, grab a trash bag (or a notepad), and let’s reclaim that forward-thinking fire together!
