A Doctor for Christmas

A few years ago I wrote a short story for a holiday anthology my friend and fellow author L.E. Perez put together. Even though I've had to focus on work and family recently, I wanted to share the story as a standalone short read for free. Please let me know what you think!

Naahla's Pet is here!

One of my favorite things is sharing my love of storytelling with my kids and their friends. I wrote Ragel's Brood for them and on career day last year I shared a copy with everyone in their class. When I mentioned I was planning a sequel, my wife and I got asked about it every time we've been up there. I've got good news!

Naahla's Pet

In Ragel's Brood, the story centered on the father dragon, Ragel, defending his family from the evil King Thorn. The new story, Naahla's Pet, follows Ragel's young dragonling, Naahla, and her pet human, Jure. When war breaks out between dragons and humans, only one creature in the world can speak both languages and end the bloodshed: Naahla's Pet.

Dragons are coming!

In a world where dragons are predators and humans are prey, a greedy human king tries to destroy a family of dragons until Ragel must rise up to protect his brood.

My newest story is a middle-grade chapter book called Ragel's Brood which will be released on December 1st. The inspiration for it started with the question, "Why would an intelligent apex predator like a dragon allow its prey to ride around on its back?"

I've always loved fantasy novels, but that's always bugged me. So I decided to tell a hero's journey story from the point of view of a dragon. Human's aren't the heroes, they're the dragon's pet two-leg.

This book is told from the point of view of the father dragon who lives in a valley with his mate and their four rambunctious offspring. The other point-of-view comes from the evil King Thorn who covets the gold where the dragons live.

Dragons and humans don't share a common language. In fact, most dragons don't believe humans are more than we consider industrious bees or mice. And despite evidence to the contrary, King Thorn refuses to admit dragons are more than animals, albeit powerful ones.

This book allows kids 8-13 years-old to explore new points of view and consider what living as a dragon would be like. It is currently being assessed for its Lexile level and how it could be included in future elementary school reading curriculum.

If you would like an advanced review copy, please contact me.

My first reading

Yesterday I had my first book reading. The crowd was enthusiastic for my new book coming out December 1st, Ragel's Brood, because it was written with them in mind.

I volunteered at the Timber Lakes Elementary career day Teach-In last year and read a little story I'd written about a family of dragons. This year I came back with the news that this middle-grade story (for ages 8-13) will be my next book!

The first proofs come in today and the all kids in the classroom will have their own copy of the book tomorrow afternoon.

Letting Go is the #1 romantic suspense novel

Five days after its release, Letting Go is now the #1 romantic suspense novel on the free bestseller lists.

I'm so grateful to those readers taking a chance on a new author. Seeing the to-read list filling up here and the ratings beginning to trickle in here and on Amazon has been exhilarating. It's currently #44 overall on the Amazon bestseller lists and has continued to climb all day. Please consider reviewing the book if you've finished it. I'd love to know what you think!

Three Days Until Letting Go Is Out!

I've been busy the last few weeks preparing for the upcoming November 1 release of Letting Go. It's hard to believe we're just three days away from release.

I'd like to thank my wife, Hala, and my family for putting up with me while I keep all the balls in the air. Both Hala and my fellow author, L.E. Perez, have stepped in to help me navigate this new terrain by standing with me at book signings and events. I also owe huge thanks to my editors, Annie Hilen and Lorena Streeter. No one writes alone... mostly because we can't see our own mistakes.

There were a number of early beta readers who provided insightful critiques and feedback. In particular, my Central Florida RWA chapter has been blessed with members like Blair Bancroft and Kristal Hollis, both of whom willingly shared their insights with me and helped me make a better story.

Whether Letting Go sails or sinks, I'll never regret the time and energy I've spent on this new endeavor. Publishing a book has been on my bucket list forever. I may never be well known, but I'll know. I can hold a book in my hands and say, I made this. That's enough for now.

Writing on the Edges

A.L. Awtrey
Writing is not the center of my life, but it does a good job filling in the rough edges. I spend just enough time to take writing seriously, without taking myself too seriously as a writer.
