POSITIVE INFLUENCE Hardcore Fanzine Anthology Pre-Order Now

So amped to announce that Shining Life Press is now taking pre-orders for the long awaited Positive Influence Fanzine anthology. This project has been over 2 years in the making so I’m both excited and relieved to have reached the finish line! Not only does this soft-bound book feature all 6 issues of Positive Influence, it also includes 21 pages of bonus material such as archival photos, flyers, ads, plus an introduction written by yours truly that goes into the history of the ‘zine with many stories from those times. It was quite a process to dig up all of the ephemera that went into this project, and honestly it’s a small miracle that so much of it had survived decades of moving around Southern California!

In the process of writing the intro, I interviewed my ‘zine partner, Buster, as well as my brother, Brian, and several other friends who either contributed to the ‘zine or were part of a story I wanted to share. As one of the few “girls in the scene” in the late 80’s hard core straight edge scene, I’m happy to have the opportunity to talk a bit about my experiences creating a low budget DIY magazine and working on artwork for some of the bands at that time, in addition to attending shows and collecting records. It was an interesting time to be alive, pre-internet, cell phones, and personal computers.

Disneyland CA Adventure Food & Wine Fest 2022 Vegan Options

Ryan and I spent an afternoon at Disneyland’s California Adventure to check out the vegan options at the annual Food & Wine Festival going on now. Though we’ve been to the park’s annual Festival of Holidays and Lunar New Year events, to the best of our recollection, this is the first time we hit up this foodie event! Watch to see our review of the seasonal plant based items offered this time around.

Lovespirals new single, “Smile,” combines Ryan’s classic shimmery guitars with a laid back beat, dreamy electric piano, and Anji’s earthy yet ethereal vocals to create a warm and welcoming sound that evokes the sunny beachside lifestyle depicted in the song’s brand new music video shot and edited by the band themselves. Ryan’s scenes were shot along the Palos Verdes cliffside while Anji’s scenes were shot at the Crystal Cove State Park.

Lovespirals ‘Smile – Single’ Out Now + Video Premiere

Lovespirals 3-song single, ‘Smile,’ is out now on all digital platforms including Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Mp3, Tidal, YouTube, Deezer and Bandcamp. In addition to brand new title track, ‘Smile’ features our song “Why Not Today,” which was previously only available on Bandcamp. All three songs continue the band’s tradition of working new influences into their signature dream pop sound.

Smile – Single by Lovespirals

Lovespirals has consistently defied musical categorization over their two decade history together, blending a dynamic tapestry of jazzy, soulful, and bluesy moods with the band’s classic California Dream Pop vibes. With the new Smile EP, however, Lovespirals’ sonic inspiration comes from a whole new place: South Korea! 

Since 2019 the duo have been exploring South Korean music, going down a sonic rabbit hole after hearing the “dark concept” side of BTS. It wasn’t long until they discovered the flourishing Korean Indie scene that’s been overshadowed by the K-Pop phenomenon. The Kozy Pop label, in particular, proved a perfect introduction to more relatable underground indie and home recording artists. 

Title track, “Smile,” combines Ryan’s shimmery Shoegazer guitars with a laid back beat, dreamy electric piano, and Anji’s earthy yet ethereal vocals to create a warm and welcoming sound that evokes the sunny beachside lifestyle depicted in the song’s brand new music video. Poppy in the very best way, “Smile,” is a bittersweet confession of the internal sorrow beneath the surface gloss of social media. 

With extremely chill vibes and super smooth production, “Why Not Today?” pulls from Lovespirals’ R&B and Soul side with a little Jazz and Blues twist. This melancholic and dreamy song was originally released as a Bandcamp only single in mid 2020. The version here is a new mix of the track that appeared on the both the digital single and music video, but nothing drastically different. 

“Down Low” is perhaps the biggest surprise of the release as it’s tougher to define genre-wise. Like the Nutty EP from Kozy Pop, “Down Low” combines distinctly Shoegaze and Dream Pop inspired guitar and vocals with the Brazilian influenced chords and progressions favored by K-Indie, along with a few quirky samples, including a rare vocal by Ryan. His soaring guitar solo could easily have been lifted from an early 90’s Love Spirals Downwards track. 

Lovespirals are thrilled to be back in the studio, writing and recording new material after having been inspired by a new pool of talented songwriters and musicians including Colde, Dept, onthedal, Jimmy Brown, Kodi Green, D. Sanguh, and Baekhyun. Look for more new music to come in 2022!
