BOOK EXCERPT:
Ch 2
Downward, we dove through a dark blanket of clouds. All belted in for a smooth landing.
As we neared the ground, the clouds cleared. We crossed a crowded expressway with bumper to bumper afternoon traffic. I could see passengers sitting in cars waiting to move forward. Touchdown was seconds away.
Without warning, the craft groaned and shuddered. Flaps shifted. Engines roared. In an instant the aircraft pitched sharply and climbed skyward with great speed.
Items tumbled from overhead bins as the plane shook violently in midair.
I gripped Charles’s arm.
The plane made a sharp turn to the left and the ground fell away.
Below us, I saw a huge orange ball of fire erupting on the runway.
“Oh my God,” I said, gripping Charles’s arm tighter.
The fire sent black smoke billowing into the air above a twisted, burning plane.
“No survivors there,” Charles said, craning his neck to see what was happening on the ground.
A few minutes later, the sound system crackled and the captain announced, “As you’re aware folks, we’ve had to abandon our final approach to land on runway 221. We’re lucky to have missed a major disaster. Eastern Air Lines Flight 66, a Boeing 727, was struck by lightning on its final approach to JFK,” his voice cracked, “and has crashed on the runway. Eastern was the plane landing in front of us. If we had arrived a split second before the Eastern plane, ours would have been the plane struck. We’re lucky to have been second on the approach path.”

Blog Tour ~ Recognitions by Daniela I. Norris
About the Book:
Title: Recognitions
Author: Daniela I. Norris
Publisher: Roundfire Books
Pages: 200
Genre: Inspirational/Women’s Fiction
Amelia Rothman, a foreign-rights editor from New York, has a turbulent personal life. She juggles a divorce and two teenage kids, and decides to seek hypnotherapy to help her deal with insomnia and anxieties. But when during the session an unexpected event emerges, she tries to understand how it is relevant to her current life and why it suddenly triggers a series of synchronicities that take her on an unexpected personal journey to the depth of her subconscious.
At once a spiritual and psychological novel, Recognitions explores the concepts of past lives, recognition of people and their roles in our present lives and life lessons.
Praise for Recognitions:
Think Cloud Atlas, a classic story of rebirth, many lives, and reincarnation on a level that involves protagonists in other lives – but take it a step further in Recognitions, the first novel in a trilogy, which presents a woman under hypnosis who sometimes encounters a French girl on the cusp of marriage and sometimes an African shaman facing a village’s struggles with illness and slavery.
Then take these diverse lives and weave them together in the story of a modern-day woman, Amelia (who must deal with these other lives and her own daily challenges, and who faces her own struggle to understand the connections and messages that lie in her dreams and hypnotic state), and you have an emotionally charged saga filled with three threads that lead back to one tapestry of wonder.
Under a different hand, this saga of birth, death, and afterlife could have easily proved confusing: it’s no simple matter to create three disparate, very different lives, and weave them together with purpose and discovery; no easy venture to bring all these pieces to life and then meld them into one… a story that is quietly compelling: a moving saga highly recommended for any reader interested in predetermination, past lives, and how three disparate worlds weave together.

Book Excerpt:
I was still considering cancelling it all as I entered through the building’s gate and stepped towards the door. I took a couple of deep breaths and looked around for clues, to help me decide whether I should go ahead with this craziness or not. I could hear my own heartbeat, which I thought was a bit weird, as I’d never noticed it before. Not like this, thumping in my ears like a distant drumbeat.
There was no name on the door – just a sticker of a dragonfly, and her initials. It looked as if it were the door to a student’s apartment, or to the practice of some dodgy manicurist, certainly not a door to another state of consciousness. When Lauren, my editorial assistant, first suggested hypnotherapy, I laughed. Lauren is the spiritual type, taking three yoga classes a week and constantly talking about meditation, energies and karma.
It isn’t that I don’t believe in these things. In fact, I don’t really know what I believe in, I just know that between my teenage kids and my day job and my attempts at finishing my never-ending novel, I hardly have time to explore all sorts of strange mind-body-spirit connections or whatever they call them these days. But since Don left I pretty much lost it, in more than one way.
I couldn’t focus on the books piling up on my desk, silently filling me with guilt for letting them sit there for so long. I was supposed to be spending my days securing foreign rights for American books, mostly working with French-language publishers. But I couldn’t do my job properly. I suffered from sudden anxieties during the day, and at night I couldn’t sleep. It’s not that he broke my heart or anything, it’s more like he somehow managed to crack the fragile confidence in humanity 1 that I’ve managed to maintain over the twenty years of living in New York City.
But I couldn’t spend the entire day in front of that door with the stupid dragonfly sticker, so I decided to knock. If she turned out to be some kind of witch with missing front teeth and hair coming out of her ears, I could always make a run for it. A woman in her late thirties opened the door, and all her teeth were intact. In fact, she had a pleasant smile. “Come in,” she said as she shook my hand, and then signaled towards a coat hanger by the door. As I took my coat off I felt a knot of anxiety in my throat, but I just swallowed it.
There was no way back now. Taking my coat off made me feel vulnerable, as if a dice had been thrown; a decision had been made, one I couldn’t go back on anymore. I wasn’t used to feeling vulnerable; it was a recent state-of-being that I still didn’t wear well. “So why are you here?” she asked. I was seated in front of her in a black leather armchair, and noticed that both my hands were clenched into tight fists. I had to choose my words carefully because I didn’t want to let the wrong ones out. Even though I didn’t know her, even though she was supposed to be able to help me with my fears and my worries and my questions, still – I wanted to make a good impression.
“I came because I can’t sleep well,” I said. “And I’ve kind of lost interest in things. I’ve been working on an historical novel for three years now, and it’s not progressing. I also have some…I suppose they’re called anxieties. About the future. Also about the past.”
I stopped there. I didn’t want to sound too neurotic. “Have you gone through any major life changes recently?” she asked, noting down my words. She stopped writing and looked at me with gentle eyes. I then noticed that she was perhaps somewhat older than I initially thought; at least her eyes seemed old.
So then I had to spill it all out. I told her how Don decided one day he’d had enough and how I was initially relieved he left because by then I’d had enough too. We’d been at each other’s throats for years and now that the kids were a little older there was no need to pretend any longer. But when he almost immediately moved in with some woman called Claudette, that’s when the anxieties started. What if I had made the wrong choice? Was it too late to change it now? Besides, what kind of name is that, anyway, Claudette? Sounded like some granny from a bad fifties movie.
But Claudette was no granny. I saw her when they came to pick up the kids together one Saturday morning about two months ago, shamelessly sitting in the passenger seat of our car, or what used to be our car, not even bothering to come out and introduce herself. She wore a little black halter-top despite the fact it was a cold day, exposing skinny shoulders and a big red pendant of some kind draped around her neck like a hangman’s noose.
Maybe it was just wishful thinking on my part, but I was more than pleased when Tom and Jen came back and said they didn’t like her at all. “She’s trying to be funny,” said Jen. “But she isn’t.”
“Yeah, she tried to bribe us with ice cream as if we were little kids,” said Tom. He was now a tall, slim teenager, his voice breaking as he spoke. But none of that mattered now, for I was lying on the therapist’s couch as she started counting backwards in a slow, monotone voice, instructing me to relax, breathe deeply, let go of all my worries and put them in a small imaginary box which – she assured me – I’d be able to pick up mentally when we finished the session. It felt nice knowing that I could put away all my worries for a little while, but then get them back if I wanted to.
I was quite attached to my worries and anxieties by then, they even felt comfortable and familiar. I could not help but wonder if I was truly and honestly ready to get rid of them.

Interview
Daniela. Thanks for being my guest today. Tell us about you.
I would define myself as someone who is always on some kind of quest. When I grew up, in a small town in Israel and then in Toronto, Canada, I didn’t know many people who had the same interests as I did – in travel – real or imaginary. I started my travels by reading books, and they took me to wonderful and exotic places. Then, after a three-year-stint as an officer in the military, I started traveling the world. I realized you don’t actually need a lot of money to travel – there are many ways to get around if you are willing to be a bit adventurous and to learn about new cultures.
As a student, I managed to get a job as a flight-attendant for an international airline, despite the fact I was afraid of flying. This allowed me to travel, as well as to pay my student loans and expenses. Then, I got a different job – for the Foreign Service – and worked in Jerusalem, Nairobi, Luanda, Lima, Paris and Geneva. I kind of got ‘stuck’ in the last place due to having had 3 boys in eight years, but I just know that as soon as we can, we will be on the move again. Of course, it is much easier to travel without children, as delightful and inspiring as they all are. But I do want my boys to learn about the joy of exploring different cultures and new places, I think we grow a lot through travel.
If you could hang out with one famous person for one day, who would it be and why?
I’d love to ‘hang out’ with the Dalai Lama for a day, but it isn’t due to his ‘famousness’. I would love to experience close-up how someone like him sees life, I am sure that one day with the Dalai Lama would be an unforgettable experience.
What’s the story behind your latest book?
It’s actually quite an interesting story – as it is based on some real past-life-regressions I’ve experienced myself. I took these regressions and fictionalized them, and they intertwined as if there were always meant to be told together. I added a lot of research as the experience of a past-life-regression is not always very detailed, but it was a really fun project to work on and I now enjoy researching and working on the next novel in this trilogy.
What is your writing process?
I agree that inspiration does exist, but if it doesn’t find you writing, it might go and knock on someone else’s door. Generally, I am of the opinion that a written page can be edited, a blank page can’t so I do try to write every day, if not three hours than at least one.
Because I have young kids, I can write almost anywhere: in the car, at a noisy café, in my bedroom with the door closed. I do have a small study but I hardly ever work there these days, somehow it is easier for me to have the flexibility of location and time. In short: I write wherever and whenever I can!
Tell us about your main character:
Amelia Rothman is an editor in New York, a city I absolutely love although I am not really a city-person. In parallel, there is Adele’s story. She is a young woman in 18th century France. She lives by the foothills of the Jura, not far from Geneva, which is the area where I live today. And, there is a 16th century African shaman, trying to save his people from a fate of slavery when the Portuguese come looking for able-bodied young men to take with them.
These are all main characters, it is difficult to speak about just one – but they are all connected. How? You’ll have to read Recognitions to find out.
If your book was to be turned into a movie, who would play the lead role and why.
Matt Damon for the male role, Angelina Jolie for the female role. Because I think they’re both not only great actors, but also great people.
What are you working on next?
Recognitions is the first novel in a trilogy and I am now working on the second book in this same series titled Premonitions.
What advice do you have for other writers who want to get the word out about their book?
I think that talks about topics related to your book are a great way to let people know what you are passionate about. This can be at bookstores, libraries or other venues. Exchanging with people who come because they are interested in similar topics to you is the best way to get the word out about what you are doing.
What is your favorite book on your shelf right now?
I loved David Michell’s The Bone Clocks if we’re talking fiction, and Memories of Heaven by Wayne Dyer and Dee Garnes if it’s non-fiction we’re looking at.
Do you have any special/extraordinary talents?
I bake fantastic chocolate cakes and am really good at eating them.
You are given the choice of one super power. What super power would you have and why?
I’d like to be able to turn fear into love – with one swing of my magic wand!
List 5 things on your bucket list:
I’d love to travel to more places I’ve never been to
Stay in touch with my good friends all over the world
Do yoga every day, at least once
Have a great cup of coffee every morning
And go to sleep with love in my heart every night
Any final thoughts?
I am hoping that Recognitions will appeal to the general readers, people who like reading novels with a bit of mystery, a bit of history, a bit of emotion – and are not afraid to explore spiritual themes too. Thank you for having me!

Quote Laura Stack:
What are some of your favorite productivity tips & apps?
Obviously, I love Doodle! I use it to schedule client conference calls and I talk about it in my presentations! Other apps I like:
TripIt. I use this for plane, hotel, directions and ground transportation. Simply forward your confirmation emails and TripIt automatically populates your digital itineraries. It also means I can access all my details on my phone as I’m walking through the airport.
Evernote. Sync content from the cloud to your desktop, laptop, tablet and smartphone. When I see an article I like online, I simply right-click, clip the page, file it in a Notebook and tag it for easy searching. I drag large PDF documents into new Notes to read on upcoming business trips. I use Evernote in conjunction with my Livescribe Smartpen, so my handwritten notes from meetings and conference calls sync through Wi-Fi to my online account. I can listen to recordings right before meetings to refresh my memory.
TouchDown. Microsoft Outlook users can sync their data to their phones, which is really handy, except the native apps require them to tap multiple icons to access different modules. Instead, I use the TouchDown ActiveSync Exchange client. This allows me to click ONE icon to access my Email, Calendar, Contacts, Tasks, and Notes, as well as handle Out of Office and Rule settings.
Square. My smartphone is a portable credit card processing machine. Using a small scanner that plugs into the earphone jack, I can accept payments for things like book sales and speaking fees. I slide the card through the scanner, enter the dollar amount and ask the buyer to sign with a fingertip. The buyer can enter an email address to receive a receipt.

Book Excerpt:
I sit quietly at the Starbucks on the corner of Wilshire and Santa Monica Boulevard, pretending to work on my laptop. Two tables away from me and next to the condiment counter sits my client, Sarah, drinking coffee and pretending to read a book. This is our second day at this Starbucks and we have already been here for forty minutes. I am beginning to wonder if we should re-evaluate our plan.
Suddenly a wave of hushed excitement spreads through the store. Everyone’s eyes are glued to the swinging front doors as Ryan Scott strides through with his shoulders back and chin up. Everyone’s eyes, that is, but Sarah’s. She looks at me without turning her head, and I give her the tiniest of nods before spinning back around to stare. She responds to my nod by feigning interest in her Jane Austen novel.
Great Sarah! Keep calm. I know you want to burst inside, but play it cool.
Ryan’s eyes quickly scan the room. Before they return to the menu board, they briefly linger on Sarah, the only person who appears not to notice him. He orders his grande latte with a double shot of espresso and leans smugly against the counter with his arms folded across his chest. He appears to be staring into space, yet every few moments his eyes fall back to Sarah, who has still not looked up from her book.
The barista calls his name, and he pauses to make sure everyone hears it before he reaches for the drink. When he turns around, Sarah is beginning to pack her things, leaving the Austen novel on the table. He heads toward the condiment counter for his regular three sugars. Just as we had rehearsed, Sarah stands up, still focused on packing up, and he tries to pass her. He stops for a moment, Sarah blocking his way.
Thank goodness these celebrities are creatures of habit. It makes my job so much easier.
“Oh, I’m sorry, I didn’t see you there.” She breathes calmly as she speaks to him. She slings her navy-blue Coach bag over her shoulder and smiles, her head leaning to the side, her eyes soft.
“That’s all right,” Ryan responds. He stands waiting for her to move but blocks her exit. He half smiles at her.
“Okay then.” Sarah glances toward the door behind him, still smiling.
“Oh, now I’m in your way,” he declares as he steps aside and watches Sarah move toward the door. “Wait, hey, your book!”
I exhale. The one contingency worked as planned. Should be easy from here on out, as long as she sticks to the script.
She stops and turns back, hiding her smile. Ryan stands there, holding her book in his hands. “Jane Austen, huh.” He smirks. “I’m shooting a movie based on one of her books next month.”
“Oh, you’re an actor. What book?” she asks, pretending not to know.
“Pride and Prejudice.” He seems intrigued by Sarah’s indifference. “Well, here you go—” He ends his sentence by fishing for her name.
“Sarah,” she finishes for him.
“Sarah,” he repeats, revealing a slow, sexy smile, “maybe we can have a cup of coffee next time.” He holds out the book but is not loosening his grip.
“Yes, maybe.” She takes the book from him, and he lets her. “Thanks.” Then she is out the door. Ryan turns and grabs his three sugars, looking around the room again to make sure everyone is still watching. Before he finishes stirring them in, I am out on the street and dialing Sarah’s cell number.
“Wow! That was unbelievable! I can’t believe it worked!” she cries.
“You were awesome! Did you see the way he looked at you?” I ask.
“Yes! I did!” She pauses. “Thank you so much, Olivia. You really made my dream come true. I mean, I never could have done this without you. I’m going to recommend you to all my friends,” she rattles on.
Thrilled that all went as planned, I head back down Santa Monica Boulevard toward my office.
About the Author
Angelina Goode began writing as a teenager. Though her first works were poems about love-struck teenagers, she grew her craft while earning her degree in Journalism and Creative Writing. A former grade school teacher that loved teaching children to write, she enjoys finding creative ways to present everyday events. Now she primarily writes light-hearted contemporary women’s fiction. She lives in Los Angeles where she enjoys the occasional celebrity sighting and year-round sun.
Angelina started gaining first-hand fan and celebrity experience as a devoted follower of her generation’s boy band. Her experience shifted in college when she interned in the promotions department for a Los Angeles based radio station and for the public relations department of a network television station. There she was able to learn about the ins and outs of promoting celebrities and all the backstage activities that are rarely seen by the public eye. She was also able to observe fans’ behavior from an objective perspective, seeing what it looks like to an outside observer.
Now she combines her experience as a loyal fan attending numerous concerts and meet and greets every year, her brief but educational stint in the entertainment industry, and a highly active imagination to create fiction for celebrity lovers of all ages.
Her latest book is the romantic comedy, The Average Girl.

Interview With ….
Angelina. Thanks for being here today. Tell us about you.
My name is Angelina Goode, and aside from being a writer, I’m primarily a mom. Most of my days are spent like most moms’ are… taking my kids places and just watching them grow up, savoring every moment. While I’ve always known I wanted to be a writer, I also wanted to be a race car driver. I spent many Saturday nights as a young adult at the race track, being a spotter for my dad who raced locally as a hobby. My dream was to be the driver myself one day. But as I got older, the dare-devil in me calmed down and the solicitous part of me took over. Now, I live dangerously by taking tap dance classes and dreaming up plots for future books. I love daydreaming about new stories and am often inspired by smells or witnessing small everyday acts, that my imagination takes and runs wild with.
If you could hang out with one famous person for one day, who would it be and why?
It would be incredible to spend the day with Pope Francis. He has found a way to appeal to people of all walks of life and religions. To be able to see what his typical day looks like and have the opportunity to learn from him how to be so open-minded and loving would be life-changing.
What’s the story behind your latest book?
When I was a teenager, my friends and I were huge fans of our generation’s boy band. We would go to their hotel and wait outside in the hopes that we would catch a quick glimpse of them or maybe even get to meet them. We would fantasize about what it would be like to actually know them and hang out with them. But we also knew that being one out of a thousand girls standing outside of a hotel didn’t give us very good odds. As an adult, I’ve had the opportunity to see the same boy band perform. Seeing it from a calmer, more mature perspective got me thinking. What if I combined the passion of a teenager with the maturity of an adult? That’s when Olivia, the main character of The Average Girl, was born. Having grown up in the Los Angeles area, I have come across quite a few celebrities doing everyday things in my lifetime. So I thought, wouldn’t it be neat if there was someone that could figure out where these celebrities shop and hang out, and help their fans casually bump into them, without all the hysteria that often comes with being a fan? That’s when the idea of Olivia’s business was born. As the story evolved in my mind, I realized that someone who helps people meet their favorite celebrities would only be thrown, and completely taken by one kind of guy… a celebrity. That’s where Alexander, the love interest, was born.
What is your writing process?
I like to stay up into the wee hours of the morning, lying in bed, thinking about what I’m going to write. I think about the characters and put them in different situations, seeing how they play out. The next day, I normally hide in the office with a cup of green tea, in silence, and write until I get it all out.
Tell us about your main character:
Olivia is a smart, independent, and passionate woman in her mid twenties. She remembers what it was like to be crazy about a celebrity, but is mature enough to keep it contained, for the most part. She is confident and impeccable at her business of arranging opportunities for fans to subtly meet their idols. She can read other people flawlessly, except when it comes to her love life. She is rather clueless in figuring out her own feelings and how people feel about her.
If your book was to be turned into a movie, who would play the lead role and why.
I would love to have Emma Stone play the role of Olivia! She’s such an amazing actress and she would play Olivia’s kind confidence perfectly.
What are you working on next?
I’m working on a romantic comedy about a conservative single mom that is secretly hired to play a Hollywood bad-boy’s new girlfriend in an attempt to improve his reputation. The story is still evolving as I write it. I’m having fun creating a character that is basically the polar-opposite of Alexander in The Average Girl.
What advice do you have for other writers who want to get the word out about their book?
Tell everyone about it. Take every opportunity you can to talk about it with people that are interested. Invite your friends to read your book, and ask them to tell their friends about it. I also think that the more you get your writing out there, regardless of the opportunity, the more people will discover you. Don’t be afraid. Go for it.
What is your favorite book on your shelf right now?
The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger. It is so well crafted and such a beautiful story. I remember the first time I read it, I kept going back and forth trying to make sense of the time differences. It is such a brilliant concept and executed perfectly. I could read it a hundred times and never tire of it.
Do you have any special/extraordinary talents?
I’m pretty good at baking. I like to experiment with ingredients and come up with new flavors and variations. My favorite things to bake at the moment are croissants. When you know all the hard work that went into making them, and how much time they took, that just makes the finished product taste even better.
You are given the choice of one super power. What super power would you have and why?
I would love to be able to become invisible. Just being able to sit in one place without people knowing you are there would not only be entertaining, but informative. You could do just about anything! You could watch a movie being filmed, athletes training, national leaders going about their daily business, someone powerful negotiating a deal, or follow royalty from some country around for a day. Not only would it be educational, but think of all the great ideas for new stories you could come up with.
List 5 things on your bucket list:
In no particular order:
Go to cooking school in Italy for a week
Learn to speak Italian
Visit all seven continents
Spend a month in the countryside writing
Have a book on the NY Times Bestseller list
Where can readers find you on the web?
Any final thoughts?
Thanks for interviewing me and I hope you enjoy reading The Average Girl.

Publisher: Mictlan Press
Number of Pages: 345
Genre: Paranormal / Contemporary Fantasy
Stuck on an island encircled by fire and hunted by shadows bent on trapping them there forever, Irene and Andras struggle to hold onto the last vestiges of their physical selves, without which they can never return to the land of the living. But it’s not just external forces they’ll have to fight as the pair grow to realize they have different goals. Irene still clings to the hope that she can somehow return to her old life—the one she had before she died—while Andras would be only too glad to embrace oblivion.
Meanwhile, Jonah desperately searches for a way to cross over to the other side, even if doing so means his death. His crossing over, however, is the one thing that could destroy Irene’s chances of returning home.
Too many obstacles, too many people to save, and the thing Irene most desperately wants—to return to her old life—seems farther away than ever. Only one thing is clear: moving on will require making a terrible sacrifice.

Andras grunted, the sound filled with suspicion. Irene bent down to tie her shoelace, as much to avoid eye contact as anything. When she straightened up, something in the distance caught her eye, shimmering like a mirage. She squinted, not sure she was really seeing what she thought she saw.
“You know, now might be a good time for you to tell me what it was like to live in a castle,” she said.
Andras shook his head, sadly, as if Irene had disappointed him. “You cling too much to the past. Forget the trappings of life. Free your mind from these longings, and so, free your soul. Only then will we be able to escape these shackles and enter Heaven to rest at the side of God.”
Why did he always have to argue about everything? “For God’s sake,” she said, exasperated, “just answer the question!”
“Wherefore?”
Irene pointed to the hulking structure in the distance. “Because,” she said as Andras whirled around to see what she was pointing at, “correct me if I’m wrong, but that looks like a castle.”
“Wow!” Irene said, her eyes roving over the dark, crenellated structure hulking in the far distance. It gleamed dully, the color of burnt blood in a fading afternoon sun. “What the hell do you think that is?”
Andras grunted. “As you said—Hell.”
Irene frowned at him, but her lips quirked in amusement. “Why do you have to be so negative? It could just as easily be Heaven. God is supposed to live in a palace, right—the whole ‘my father’s house has many rooms’ thing? A castle is just a type of palace.”
Andras gave her a dry look. “Does that look like Heaven?”
Irene was on the verge of agreeing that the castle did not in any way look how she imagined Heaven when it shimmered, as if the fading sunlight had been redirected by mirrors. Light rippled across the castle’s surface and the dull, dark, burnt-blood color transformed into gleaming, bright, silver-white. Crisp white pennants flapped from the corners as if whipped by wind. Irene thought she could hear them snapping crisply.
Irene looked at Andras, and he looked at her. His expression made it clear that he had seen the same transformation she had. It was as if the building was trying to trick them into coming closer.

Book Excerpt:
The woman in the sunburst yellow dress settled behind a small boy who stood between his parents in the front row. In her carefully chosen spot, she would have no problem seeing the senator. More important, he would be able to see her.
Following the presidential candidate’s schedule occupied most of her time. She knew him, and his routines. He was a clever politician, a clever man. At one time, she admired that about him. In spite of his womanizing history, she’d held him in high esteem. She hadn’t cared about the rumors of his less-than-ethical political acumen. He was bright and confident. Like her, he knew what he wanted and achieved it. The one thing he lacked was loyalty. That was his one unforgivable flaw.
A momentary stab of rejection cut through her as crushing memories of betrayal clamored to the forefront of her mind. Another staunch memory held them at bay, protecting her as always from thoughts that could leave her filled with rage or shattered from distress. I did what I had to. He gave me no choice.

BOOK EXCERPT
Her Perfect Catch by K.L. Brady
The lobby was no less elegant than the hotel’s exterior, draped in luxurious natural-colored decor with reddish accents, Italian marble, and ornate European-styled furniture placed in cozy, conversational arrangements. The desk attendant, an older gray-haired lady with a southerntwang, shifted her eyes between them.
“Well, don’t you two make the cutest couple?”
“We do, don’t we?” Dylan said, wrapping his arm around Mel’s shoulder, grinning as if he won the lottery.
With one eyebrow up, Mel glanced at his hand and then brushed it off. “Uh, no, no. We’re
best friends.”
“Oh, I get it. Friends with benefits.” She winked.
“No, no. Just buddies.”
“Well, if he’s not with you”—she reached between her ample bosom and pulled out a
business card—“he can give me a call. I get off in an hour.”
“Uh, ma’am, we’d just like to check in, please. Any additional rooms available?”
She pursed her lips and gave Mel every bit of her attitude. “Afraid not. We’re all booked up until Monday. Super Bowl.”
Mel handed the woman her credit card, waited for her to process it for incidentals and hand her the keycards. “Room 315. Up the elevator to the third floor; your room is on the left at the end of the hall.” As Mel dragged her suitcase and Mack toward the elevator, his carrier handle started to cut into her finger so she swapped bags with Dylan. Then they pressed ahead through the pristine, marble lobby to catch a ride to their room.
“Mel, why do you keep doing that?” Dylan asked as they waited for the elevator to alert its arrival.
“Doing what?”
“Telling everyone we’re not together as if I’m a leper or something.”
“If my memory serves me correctly, denying that we’re a couple used to be your role. How many times have you told your potential prey that I’m your little sister?” Mel responded, giving him the side eye. “Guess you taught me well, Obi-Wan.”
He grimaced as the elevator doors opened, motioned her inside, and pressed “3.”
“Listen, I’ve wanted to talk to you about Gizelle. She didn’t cancel. I did…and there’s a
reason, something I didn’t realize until recently.”
“How many times did I tell you Gizelle was all wrong for you?”
“About a thousand, but that’s not what I’m—”
She let out a long exasperated sigh. “Dylan, while I just love hearing about your sexual
exploits and break-ups,” she said facetiously, “how about you hold that thought until after I’m out of a hot shower and into some pajamas.”
“But you don’t understand. What I’m trying to say is—”
Just then the doors opened and Mel stepped off the elevator. It was too late when she heard someone yell, “Go deep!”
An object collided against her temple, causing a dull aching pain to stretch across her skull and into her neck. Dylan’s voice screamed, “Watch out!” before all light and sound faded and the hall went black.

Author Bio
Ritter Ames is the USA Today Bestselling author of the Organized Mysteries series and the Bodies of Art Mysteries series. When she’s not writing or brainstorming new mysteries Ritter is usually trying to get her favorite yellow lab to stay out of the pond, or keep her grouchy black cat from trying to give the dog away on Freecycle. Ritter would love to live on a boat and write from far flung locations around the globe, but the dog would constantly have to be fished from the water, and her husband and cat would just complain endlessly about the dog’s smell, so staying on land seems to be the only good option to keep her sanity and not get sidetracked from writing.
