Rage Against Limits of Age, (c) 2019 by Pamela Schloesser Canepa
Lines at my eyes don’t bother me,
‘cuz I already fell from the tree.
I’ll raise a glass and tell you my age,
Since that makes lying men run away.
Some say to wear more makeup,
Some say you should wear less.
Which will make me look younger?
I supposed it’s anyone’s guess.
When out, I’ll wear hoop earrings and my Blondie tee
With those special fit jeans that cost a pretty penny.
I’m ‘wowing’ the town in my not-cougar ensemble,
But I’ve gotta wear Nikes, so I don’t take a tumble.
Though I no longer do Ben-Gay-Zumba these days,
I still do the plank pose, modifed, okay?
And some may think I count for less,
Rage against the whimps who can’t handle this mess
Who raise a brow at what I wear,
question the true color of my hair
Rage against high-priced age creams
Products promising to fulfill our dreams….
Rage against those who try to limit me with age
I decide how much to do before turning the page.
Do not sit quietly and age.
Do all you still can, and hysterically. Girl, rage!

Sky meets ground. #poetry

“Sky Meets Ground, ” (c) 2019 by Pamela Schloesser Canepa
I am here
With my fingers in the dirt
That feels so cool and smells like earth.
I open my mouth and taste the dew like manna from heaven.
No one shows up ’til later, baking on a new tan,
But I’d rather hang out with my one and only friend.
The dew descended from the clouds for a party, until the sun says it’s his turn,
Uses its power to burn the moisture up,
Chases it back to the sky.
Now it’s just myself and I,
No one understands.
I will leave before the hour is at hand with all those strangers who feel cool because they look like each other
Because they act like each other, and they don’t need to know I was here.
Still, I return for what I can’t see
Another weirdo in the haze of a.m., feeling outside of them, just like me.

Weekend Coffee Share. Get Outdoors!
Welcome to my Weekend Coffee Share, hosted by Allison at https://eclecticali.wordpress.com/
Bixby is representing my Coffee Share, since yesterday was National Puppy day!
The weather has been beautiful! Yesterday, I enjoyed a festival with my son called Gastrofest which, as you might guess, is all about tasty delights. We wondered around in the breezy spring weather listening to the Jazz fusion band that played there. No, I didn’t have a pulled pork donut, but I did have pulled pork, and it was scrumptious!

I hope you’re enjoying your beverage of choice, whether coffee, tea, or a smoothie. I had a mock mojito and drank my hot coffee before leaving the house. Though I indulged dietarily, my son and I did walk over a mile between the parking and the event. I think it balances out.

In the Nineties. #poetry
(c) Pamela Schloesser, 2019
It was the nineties,
I was young, and you were bold,
I just wanted to be told
How beautiful I was.
My brother skated, my mother worried,
And I tried not to seem so smart.
It was the nineties;
I just wanted to be cool
and I wanted to be pretty.
I married someone
who was the life of the party.
We were all about
Chinese takeout
and a thirteen inch t.v.
Californians were cooler than us
Moulder and Scully were
more interesting than us.
We’d finish our X-files and takeout
and sit on the back porch
watching for our own aliens.
I’d retreat to some Stephen King
you’d escape somewhere partying
with people cooler than I.
You’d always return,
whether I liked it or not;
I was home base.
Whether you walked straight or not
if you howled at the moon or not,
whether you were seeing two or three,
I was still home base.
Starting a family didn’t help.
Threatening to leave didn’t help.
It was the nineties and we were
just who we were.
But I didn’t like you interpreting
my place anymore.
It was nineteen ninety eight
and time to get things straight.
Growing up is important.
We do what we must do,
and it was time to acknowledge
that I couldn’t grow with you.
It was the late nineties
and I’d dashed your world,
split up our family, taken your son.
I was many horrible things
all rolled up into one.
But I walked on that broken glass
with a toddler in my hands
to freedom on the other side.
It was the nineties,
and then it no longer was.
A new millenium,
The crossing of a threshold.
I was thirty, and wise
but not at all old.
I look back, glad Iit’s in the past.
But still, I learn when I look back.
**The nineties were an important part of me, and such a very interesting decade on their own. This timeframe has shown up in my writing, particularly in the book, Detours in Time. Cheers!

“I really liked the author’s straight-forward, family-friendly style, which moved along smoothly with a steady stream of suspense, action, and dialog. Additional plot twists toward the end set the stage for a sequel, which should be equally engaging. I look forward to what lies ahead for Milt and Pinky as they seek to untangle the twisted web of time that results from their adventures.” -Amazon Review

Weekend Coffee Share. Dogs and R and R.
Welcome to my Weekend Coffee Share, hosted by Allison at eclecticali.wordpress.com
Here we enjoy our favorite java, tea, or smoothie, and chat about whatever comes to mind and what is going on lately.
I’ve been blessed with a week off. Did I do any writing, you may wonder? Well, yes I did! My current WIP is around 35,000 words and is based on a side character from my book, Detours in Time. I already have the ending in mind, which means now I need to meander through it again and show a little bit more about the characters. It seems to be a more pared down manuscript when I start with the end in mind. It has been almost three years since I published my first work of fiction, and I started out as a pantser. Now, thought I write with the end in mind, I still am really pantsing it through the rest of the manuscript. I sort of leave it to stew until the muse hits me. What do you all think? Does too much planning kill the details? Sometimes they just have to come to me at the right time. My next work break is this summer. I am making a date with my manuscript for several weeks at that time! It’s been great having a week for w-riting and relaxing!
Other than that, I grew tired of sitting at the computer for too long. I do a lot of that while I am working, plus adding in certification endorsement classes to my schedule. So, I did a little loafing this week. I saw friends for dinner one night, and I went to see Glass with the boyfriend last night. I enjoyed it. It was not as tense as Split, but it was definitely a psychological thriller with satisfying twists! The characterization is amazing, and it helps to have seen the two previous movies involving these characters. I am a fan of M. Night Shyamalan, overall, and certainly a raving fan of James McAvoy. His face goes from glee, to penitence, to murderous terrorizing in seconds, perfectly. At home, I’ve watched a little Netflix, and I even got slightly hooked on Shameless. The acting is great, but there is a lot of inappropriate material. It is drama/comedy centered around the family of a “shameless” drunk. It is actually pretty sad at times. Like a train wreck….which actually is a plot point in the movie, Glass.
I plan to take my little canine to the dog park later. We have had several walks this week and morning coffee on the front porch days. He loves it, because he is off the leash on the front porch. Why not?? It’s his property, and he is a little more well-trained now. What he hates is when I walk him on a leash and we pass by a dog watering their own lawn, off-leash. Such dogs are well-trained and don’t leave their own lawn. I am trying to get Bixby to that point, and it seems to be going well. If he needs to do any serious potty time, though, he will give the begging eyes so I will leash him and walk him a bit further. Works out for me as well!

Would you believe, I haven’t gotten up before 8:30 a.m. at all this week! I was fighting a sinus/allergy issue, so that may be part of it. I went to yoga yesterday for the first time in two weeks, and my shoulders are sore. I have to get back into it. Things happen: work meetings, sickness, etc., but I did use a stretching app at home. No, it’s not the same, but it’s something. Back to the grind this coming Monday.
I hope you all have a great week! Thanks for stopping by to share a cup with me!

Short Fiction: “To Walk.” #shortreads
[image error]
To Walk, by Pamela Schloesser Canepa. (c) 2019
I don’t care if you believe in reincarnation or not. Either way, I was once a seasoned philosopher. People would come from miles and miles to hear me speak.
As public transportation became more popular, I resisted. What use did I have for a horse or chariot? I would walk everywhere I could. The sun would warm my face and the cool breeze would whisper around me, telling of the season. There would be happy children, dogs, or squirrels along my route. I was one with nature.
Now, I live a somewhat different life. Oh, there’s still plenty of time for philosophizing. I put other people at ease. There is obviously purpose in my life, if nothing other than to remind people to lighten up. But I await indoors, always anticipating that one word: Walk. I will lose my composure whenever it is uttered. She seems to understand and doesn’t get after me too much for lounging on her couch or comfy chair. All I long for is to hear those words.
“Want a walk?” She asks, like she doesn’t know the answer. I’ll immediately jump up and down, pawing her legs, begging.
“Do I want a walk? Woman, what do you think? Don’t make me beg!”
The moment we walk out of that door, I am me again, regardless of the leash around my collar.

Weekend Coffee Share. Busy Times Call for Dog Snuggles and Positive Thought.
Welcome to my Weekend Coffee Share, hosted by Allison at eclecticali.wordpress.com
Today, I’m wondering why little, harmless things seem to make me sore. Sitting at the computer for too long, wearing some cute flats to work, sleeping on the wrong side. I’ll be okay if I stick to my self prescriptions of exercise, yoga, and chiropractic care. (I’m on the Gazzelle as I type on the phone). Still, sometimes life and work get in the way.
At any rate, age and schedule woes aside, I have much to rejoice over. Attitude might be almost half of starting to feel better, so let me get on that track and avoid telling you how many essays I need to grade! Positives: 1. All I have left is a test, then I’ll be done with my current class for teaching Gifted! 2. Spring break starts in seven days! 3. Despite a busy week, part of my extra efforts were due to being invited to talk at my school’s Literacy night about my books, writing process, and writing inspiration. Cue random auther event photo:
This was me at my first book signing in Nov., 2018. (So, it’s recent). I don’t have a photo from the Literacy event yet, but I can say it went well. I had a plan and wrote some things down. I gave away one of my kids’ books in a drawing. I also read from Detours in Time, having kids comment and answer questions about what I read. They participated, and during question times, some adults asked questions. One of them was about my writing inspiration (family, my dog, nature). I spoke about the kind of person I am and how thrilled I am to see a book with my name on it. My principal told me afterward just how much energy came out of me when I talked about my writing and inspirations. It was truly a compliment. I was pleased to do this, and it tickles me to think I may have inspired a young writer!
With the past few books, I have been thinking about the lessons one could learn from my books and what topics of thought I could provoke when they read my books. I believe I moving closer to producing writing that is meaningful besides being entertaining. One reader recently called my sci-fi writing “social science-fiction.” I like that. I think I’ll stick with it!
Simply put, life is challenging and my legs and feet are tired, but I love life, and I love what I do! I came home after Literacy night and snuggled up with my dog, who was glad to snooze next to me, calming me and easing away the excitement and any uneasiness I’d had about my day. Life is good! Have a great week, my friends.
