Today’s Coffee Break Read
The newly elected President tried to hide the slight shiver of apprehension, waiting as the huge vault was unsealed. There was no breeze this far underground and the whir of the system that ensured pollutant filtered air was the only sound apart from the slight squeak of shoes on the flooring.
The efficient aide tried to offer a reassuring smile as the huge door swung open.
“If you would step this way, please.”
Inside the vault, the air seemed less than fresh with a slight metallic...
The Moon and I
Born she was from darkness
In the bosom of the night
Daughter of indiscretion
Selene who shines so bright
Relaxes she and grows by day
Secret as a nun
And then she bellies like a sail
Giving back the sun
Born was she to wax and wane
In her appointed time
She calls the seas to rise and fall
A Circe in her prime
Born she was from that dark sky
Wherein we see her face
Silver sister, crescent moon
Epitome of grace
Born she was from darkness
Born she was to die
Consider our mortality
The crescent...

THE BAD BILLIONAIRE
Candy had worshipped the boss from afar since her very first day at Maxwell Industries. But she was just a typist, and no matter how fast her heart beat and how the butterflies in her stomach fluttered at the very sound of his voice, the best she could realistically hope for was the occasional glimpse of his commanding figure as he strode through the corridors with his team of secretaries and assistants at his heels.
The call to his office to take some dictation came out o...
A Bite of… LN Denison
A Bite Sized Interview with LN Denison – author of dystopian novels ‘Only The Few’ and ‘Going Underground’
Q1: Noodles or spaghetti?Spaghetti, for sure…only because I like to suck it up, like in Lady and the Tramp. It’s not so easy to do with noodles, I’ve tried. Doesn’t feel right.
Q2: Where would you least want to find a copy of your book?In a cave? But no! The real answer would be, in a toilet, because the pages are liable to end up being used to wipe someone’s arse.
Q3: what is the one...July 16, 2017
Today’s Coffee Break Read
There were two other men in the hot bath, lazily reclined and talking in low voices. They were both, Dai could not fail to notice, wearing heavy Patrician rings so even when naked they were still marked out as superior beings, paunches and all.
“It is incredible who they allow in here nowadays,” one said, his eyes flicking contemptuously over Dai. “Shouldn’t be allowed.”
“I didn’t think natives were allowed in these baths – never seen one before, anyw...

Weekend Wind Down
Today we welcome Chrys Cymri who is offering a weekend read to enchant us.
From ‘The Temptation of Dragons‘ Chapter One‘Vicar arrested for drunk driving’ is not the sort of headline my bishop wants to read about his priests. So I slowed down my Ford as I saw the flashing lights of the police car ahead. An accident. I hunched low over the steering wheel, hoping to hide the tell tale sign of the dog collar around my neck. My wine-sweetened breath wafted back into my face, reminding me of the r...
A short shocker
CHEAP HOOCH
The outbreak of violence was sudden and almost gleeful. At one minute the darts match was friendly, if a little rowdy, the next second the air was full of curses, thrown punches and broken glass.
Mickey crouched down behind the bar, pulling at Charlie’s trouser leg until he too ducked under the sturdy wood.
“Get down Chas. It ain’t worth getting hurt for a few bottles of cheap hooch.”
For an instant he looked as if he was about to argue, then his shoulders slumped and he sat down....

The Minder
The child sat upon her low, roughhewn stool, eyes focused on some point in the distance that only she could see. Her small hands, calloused, scarred, and stained from years of labor, methodically extracted one soft, pulpy berry after another from their spiny husks. Though considered one of the more dangerous tasks, the child shucked berries effortlessly, long past the point where pokes of the razor sharp spines or the bu...
