If you're a chick, please do stop by Drink & Draw Like a Lady West on Friday night! There will be cupcakes. (At the link, scroll down for info.)

A Wrinkle in Time

I'm thrilled to announce, at long last, that I'm writing and illustrating the graphic novel adaptation of A Wrinkle in Time for Farrar, Straus and Giroux!

:D

This is a dream project. Wrinkle is one of my favorite books, and Madeline L'Engle is one of my favorite authors and a huge influence on my storytelling. I think I said in an interview a couple years ago that it's the only book I'd consider adapting. Little did I know it would actually happen!

If you're worried about me messing with a book ...

I hope it was worth the wait! :D

Not the Secretary, 2010 version

I've made this post about once a year for the past 5 or 6 years. Here we go again!

Please don't e-mail me if you're trying to get in touch with Bryan Lee O'Malley.

I don't care how desperately you need to get in touch with him. This is unacceptable.

You want to buy some artwork for your sweetie? E-mail his publisher, Oni Press.

Your friend wants to produce a Scott Pilgrim cartoon? E-mail his publisher, Oni Press.

You want to interview him? E-mail his publisher, Oni Press.

If you persist in e-mailin...

Process Project

"Snow Ball" Thumbs
Originally uploaded by hopelarson

If you follow me on Twitter, you already know that I'm working on a short comic and posting the process art on Flickr. When it's complete I'll compile the whole thing–script, thumbnails, roughs, inks–into a short comic for print and web. The idea isn't to make a comics how-to, but to show how much work goes into something as basic as a 10-page short story.

It's nerve-wracking to show work to the world when it's vulnerable and new, but that's ...

Best Mercury review ever.

I'm so impressed by kids who blog. At age 10 I wasn't nearly as motivated as Grace! I hope she's showered with all the review copies her heart desires. :)

Salamander Dream on the Kindle!

I made a kindle edition of Salamander Dream just to see how it would work out, and I think it worked out pretty well! If you're curious, you can buy it for $2.00 on Amazon.

Or you can read it bigger, and in color, for $0.00 over yonder at the Secret Friend Society.

If you're interested in kindlizing your own comics, this tutorial over at Robot Comics was extremely helpful.

Lynn Lau's winning entry

I just got permission from Lynn to post this, so here it is!

In 1859 I would be one of the Chinese immigrants settled in the Malaccan straits. Dad would be in his element playing the middleman between local merchants and British colonials, while I'd help my mum supplement the family income by weaving mengkuang mats (and to her great exasperation, I still would not sit like a girl). It is a time full of change as new cultures and governments intermingle, and I would feel the barest inkling of s...

MERCURY contest winners!

Most people did a writing/art combo, so the lines of the contest were blurred a little bit. Regardless, my favorite entries were these:

[info:] krishnaa 's entry about living in India, here;
[info:] meeleena 's awesome drawing that she should expand into a comic, because I'd read it, here;
[info:] ducttapesnakes 's written/drawn entry about being biracial in 1859, here;
• and Lynn Lau's written/drawn entry about Chinese immigrants living in the Malaccan straits, which I'm waiting on permission to post here.

You four a...
