April & May Events

Dear Internet,

Hello! I had a great time at Wondercon on April 1-3rd, and I’ve got a few upcoming events you should know about.

• Tuesday, April 12th–that’s tonight–I’ll be at Skylight Books in Los Angeles for a graphic novel panel with Deborah Vankin and Jen Wang. The event starts at 7:30pm, and it’s basically a release party for Deb’s new graphic novel, Poseurs (Image Comics), but if you buy or bring one of my books I’ll be more than happy to sign it!

• Wednesday and Thursday, April 13th and 1...

Girls & Comics Survey Results

A couple weeks ago, as part of my ongoing quest to reach tween girls with my comics, I sent out surveys to a couple hundred girls and women who reads comics in their teens or tweens. Here are the results, reported as faithfully as I know how. Please bear in mind that I am NOT a professional researcher, and that my sample size was small—just 198 people. I undertook this project to satisfy my own curiosity, and my curiosity has definitely been satisfied, but I hope that someone with an academic...

Fanaticon

#Fanaticon in downtown Asheville NC #avlfan
Originally uploaded by Ask Asheville

So, I was fully expecting Fanaticon, in my hometown of Asheville, NC, to suck.

Hometown events–whether they're signings, Free Comic Book Day, book festivals, or mini-cons–are usually a humiliating experience. Populated mainly by family, family friends, or people I went to school with, they're a reminder that I haven't hit the bigtime yet, and that comics are a long way from becoming mainstream entertainment. Plus, ...

A friend of mine has a question about webcomic formatting. It's posted over on the Ning.

By the way, I'm going to be phasing out this journal within the next couple of months, when my new site is ready. The new blog will have RSS, though, so you can keep reading it on LJ if you want.

Girls & Comics

If you're female and read comics as a teen or tween (it doesn't matter how old you are now!), would you please take a moment on this short survey? Your answers can be as brief or long as you like. Feel free to ramble, vent or go off on tangents.

For purposes of this survey, "comics" means comic books, graphic novels, manga, webcomics, etc.

1) How old were you when you started reading comics?

2) How did you first discover comics?

3) What comics were your favorites as a teen/tween? Any reason why?

Who are you and what sorts of comics do you read?

If you have a minute, please take my short poll about you and your comics reading habits!

Fear not, I won't rat you out to the Feds if you're a comics pirate. This is just to satisfy my own curiosity.

If you ordered a personalized copy of Mercury from me, thank you! As of today your book's in the mail.

If you want a copy and haven't ordered yet, there's still time! I'll leave the listing up through Friday.

Who wants an autographed MERCURY?

I have a bunch of copies of hardcover copies of Mercury left over from cons—I didn't take nearly enough copies to Stumptown—and since I'm moving across the country in June I'd really like to get rid of a few!

If you live in the US and Canada, $25 USD gets you a book, shipping, a sketch (in the book), and whatever personalization you desire. Make sure you let me know who I'm signing the book to, or I'll just sign my name.

Click the yellow "Add to Cart" button to get started!
