What kind of advice would you give to an aspiring writer? I’m working on writing a book and I love the ideas I have in my head, but I feel like it’s really difficult to actually put my ideas on paper! P.S. I’m OBSESSED with TQR it’s definitely one of m
Thank you so much! I’m honored that TQR has been an inspiration for you!
So I have two pieces of advice. The first advice I often give to aspiring writers is to write for yourself.
When you write for yourself, you write for the love and joy of it, which creates a magical story that only you can breathe onto the page. Don’t write to get published, or for glowing reviews, or for the NYT Bestseller list. Write the book of your heart, something that stirs you, moves you, empowers you. And if it becomes published, that’s amazing! And if it gets a hoard of glowing reviews, that is also amazing! Same with hitting the list. But also remember writing a book that you love is, hands down, the best thing of all and outshines all of these other things.
My other piece of advice is to write and read as much as you can.
Some people think this means you must write everyday. You don’t. You might have a billion things going on in your life, and you can only write on Tuesday nights and Saturday mornings. That’s ok. Write whenever you can. But this also doesn’t mean “write whenever you feel like it.” You have to make a habit out of it if you truly want to improve your craft and get an entire book drafted in a timely manner. You have to write when the words are flowing, and when the words are not flowing, when you inspired and even when you don’t feel inspired.
And refresh your soul by reading. Learn from authors you love by reading and enjoying their works.
All of this to say, I hope this advice is helpful and that it encourages you to keep getting all of your ideas down on the page :)
How did you get your book published?
My book is published because of my literary agent. She is amazing, and without her, I would not be where I am today. And how did I find my agent? Well, I did a lot of research on literary agents, made a list of those who I thought would love my book, and then I began to email queries (a 250 word pitch of my book) out to those agents.
I queried Suzie and came up through the “slush pile” in her inbox (I was probably 1 of 200 other query emails she received that week). She read my query, was interested, and emailed me back, requesting my full manuscript. Months later, she offered to represent me. And then because she is awesome, she knew the perfect editor for my book and sent my manuscript to that editor. And the editor read my book, loved it, and offered me a three book publishing deal.
All the stars aligned for this to happen. But they aligned because I 1) worked my butt off 2) never gave up 3) had some great people on my side to guide and support me.
Have you read any books where it switched POV halfway through to a new character for a partly different story, but joined in the end to tie them together? I’m writing a book and this is how I’ve planned it out, but I’m not sure if there are even any other
Hmm…you know, I honestly don’t think that I have. Or one simply isn’t coming to mind at the moment.
It definitely sounds like a cool idea, though!
If you had the option, would you want to be from Maevana or Valenia (assuming Maevana wasn’t run by a tyrannical king!)
Ahh, this is a hard one for me to answer! Because I love both realms so much!
I think I’m going to have to choose them both, and be like Brienna with dual citizenship.

✨”I’m where the X is marked, / I arrived battle ready—“ / “I am the indication, / I sign myself across the line.” -Elizabeth Acevedo, THE POET X ✨ I just finished this electrifying, beautiful novel-in-verse this morning and it has quickly become one of my all-time favorite reads. Have you read this yet? You definitely should. And then after that, go check out Elizabeth’s website (www.acevedowrites.com) and watch her perform her poems on stage. Her words will move you, inspire you, empower you. ✨
