What kind of advice would you give to an aspiring writer? I’m working on writing a book and I love the ideas I have in my head, but I feel like it’s really difficult to actually put my ideas on paper! P.S. I’m OBSESSED with TQR it’s definitely one of m
Thank you so much! I’m honored that TQR has been an inspiration for you!
So I have two pieces of advice. The first advice I often give to aspiring writers is to write for yourself.
When you write for yourself, you write for the love and joy of it, which creates a magical story that only you can breathe onto the page. Don’t write to get published, or for glowing reviews, or for the NYT Bestseller list. Write the book of your heart, something that stirs you, moves you, empowers you. And if it becomes published, that’s amazing! And if it gets a hoard of glowing reviews, that is also amazing! Same with hitting the list. But also remember writing a book that you love is, hands down, the best thing of all and outshines all of these other things.
My other piece of advice is to write and read as much as you can.
Some people think this means you must write everyday. You don’t. You might have a billion things going on in your life, and you can only write on Tuesday nights and Saturday mornings. That’s ok. Write whenever you can. But this also doesn’t mean “write whenever you feel like it.” You have to make a habit out of it if you truly want to improve your craft and get an entire book drafted in a timely manner. You have to write when the words are flowing, and when the words are not flowing, when you inspired and even when you don’t feel inspired.
And refresh your soul by reading. Learn from authors you love by reading and enjoying their works.
All of this to say, I hope this advice is helpful and that it encourages you to keep getting all of your ideas down on the page :)
