What would be the most important advice you could give to aspiring writers?
Holly Black gave this advice one time, and it has stuck with me:
“Don’t write for your writer self. Write for your reader self.”
Write the story you want to read. In that first draft, throw it all on the page. Don’t try to restrict yourself by writing a perfect story in the first draft. Instead, as Anne Lamott has taught me in her book BIRD BY BIRD, let your writing breathe and move and weep and leave a trail of clutter on the page. Your picky, perfectionist writer self can edit things in your second and third drafts.
What is your favorite YA fantasy book? What would you recommend as a follow up read to TQR while us readers wait for the sequel to this amazing series?! :)
I have A LOT of favorites.
Some of them include:
THE LUMATERE CHRONICLES by Melina Marchetta
THE FORGOTTEN BEASTS OF ELD by Patricia A. McKillip
THE BELLES by Dhonielle Clayton
AN ENCHANTMENT OF RAVENS by Margaret Rogerson
THE STAR TOUCHED QUEEN by Roshani Chokshi
WINTERSONG by S. Jae Jones
THE CRUEL PRINCE by Holly Black
AN EMBER IN THE ASHES by Sabaa Tahir
As for books I recommend as a follow up read to TQR:
THE BOOKS OF PELLINOR by Alison Croggon
THE SHADOWFELL TRILOGY by Juliet Marillier
THE QUEEN OF THE TEARLING by Erika Johansen
HIS FAIR ASSASSINS TRILOGY by Robin LaFevers
THE REMNANT CHRONICLES by Mary E. Pearson
Other than Brienna, which of her Arden sisters would you be most likely to befriend if you were in Magnalia?
Ahh, this is a tough choice! Because I adore all of the sisters. I have very vivid memories of drafting the scenes with Oriana, Abree, Merei, Ciri and Sibylle back in 2015, when I had no idea if anything would ever come of this book. So all of the girls are dear to me, because I feel as if they have been right there with me through the ups and downs.
But, to answer your question…I am very introverted, but some of my greatest friendships are with extroverts. I think it’s because we balance one another, and being around extroverted individuals helps draw me out of my shell. So, I am going to say that I would probably get along very well with Abree. I love her tenacity and her friendliness and her humor.
Do you think TQR might be made into a movie someday? If so, who do you imagine would play Brienna, Cartier, and all the arden sisterss and three fallen lords? Oh, and Yseult/Isolde?Personally, I would imagine Alycia Debnam Carey as Brienna, Adelaide Kane a
That would be wild if it was!
I’m always hesitant to say who I would cast, because right now I like for my readers to imagine the characters (such as your choices, which are all lovely, BTW).
I do have a few pins on Pinterest that give a little insight as to how I envision my characters, if you’re curious.
