This picture was like a time machine today. I was scrolling through some old photos and landed on this one, which was taken on March 21, 2019. Just a little over a year ago. And it made me stop and think about how the cherry trees are in full bloom right now, and they are just as beautiful and true and faithful as they were the year before. They still bloom even when the world is at crisis.

This photo took me back to 2019, but then it guided me even further into the past, to when I was a girl climbing a cherry tree in the front yard of the house I grew up in.

When I was 2 months old, my mom’s friend gave me a sapling cherry tree. My family planted that little wisp of a tree in the front yard. Every year, my grandparents would take a picture of me with my cherry tree. In the beginning, my mom would hold me beside it, because the tree and I were both quite small. But as I grew, so did the tree, and soon I was climbing it’s limbs, finding shelter beneath its snowy blossoms in spring, it’s lush greenery in summer, it’s golden leaves in autumn, and even it’s bare, cold branches in winter.

*

*

I have not seen my cherry tree in years, not since my family moved from Decatur in 1998. But I hear the tree is still there, a mighty sentry in that childhood yard. And that it still blooms, even when the world feels as if it has stopped.

A few months ago, before the pandemic was even a thought, my Opa said to me, “When the world feels dark and hopeless, plant a tree. You might not ever see that tree grow into maturity, but the future generations will.”

Hi friends! How is everyone doing? I hope you all are well. I’m...

Hi friends! How is everyone doing? I hope you all are well. I’m going to be honest: I’ve been struggling to feel motivated when it comes to talking about upcoming book stuff, because my heart is heavy. Every day is rife with uncertainty, and the news changes by the hour. I’m watching positive corona virus numbers go up every day—in my county and elsewhere—and it’s difficult to want to talk about my book when all I can think about are those who are at risk, those who are tirelessly working, and those currently in very heartbreaking circumstances because this pandemic has shut down so many businesses and schools and employment.

Months ago, I planned to open my Street Team sign up this week. And I’m not gonna lie: I almost decided to just nix the entire thing. But after giving it much consideration, I’ve decided to go forward with my plans, because I know many of you are at home right now, and receiving an ARC of SISTERS might be a helpful thing to get you through the next few weeks (or months!).

*

*

The sign up form to join my Street Team will go live this Thursday, March 19th, at noon EST. I will make an announcement here when it’s live. The first 75 people who sign up will receive a digital advance reader copy of SISTERS via Edelweiss. Everyone who sign ups thereafter will revive a PDF of the first three chapters, so everyone who signs up will receive something.

*

*

The first mission for the Street Team won’t kick off until May 19th. I sincerely hope the world is much better by then, but if the virus is still causing terrible disruption, please feel free to drop out of the team if you feel overwhelmed (but please do email me so I know). I plan to play it week by week, day by day, and reserve the right to still cancel the team if things do indeed become much worse. Again, I’m hoping that won’t be the case, but much of that depends on us NOW, in this moment as we seek to flatten the curve.

Let me know how you are doing in the comments below!

A little glimpse of my desk where the magic happens. ✨ I’m terribly fond of journals, candles that smell like an enchanted garden, and pretty glass that holds fragile and natural things.

The smell of old books or new books? Hardbacks or paperbacks? Deckled edges or smooth edges? Audiobooks, ebooks or printed books? So many things to love about books, am I right!?

Have you ever written your future self a letter? ✉️ Today I wrote 3. One to open on the last day of this year, one to open three years from now, and one to open a decade from now. It’s easy for me to get distracted and anxious about things to come, what outcomes may or may not happen. And so I decided to write to myself, to the Becca on the other side of these years, who knows the answers to my current hopes and dreams and prayers. ✉️ Now I just need to not lose them and remember to open them when the time comes!
