I’ve written 64% of my word count goal for the year & it’s only April!
I’ve written 128,680words so far this year. Considering my goal was to write 200,000 words total by the end of the year, I would say that’s pretty impressive. Needless to say, I bumped my goal up to 300,000 and added a new little line on my insane spreadsheet that tells me what I’m currently on pace to hit if I stick to my current average words per day. It’s currently projecting that I’ll finish the year with well over 400k so I think the likelihood of my upping the goal again is high.
At firs...
The Love of Three Oranges goes traditional commedia at West Linn High School
I’ve got two great photographs from West Linn High School’s production of The Love of Three Oranges courtesy of this review from the WestLinn Tidings. They did the show as a more traditional commedia play with masks and it looks great!

I always love seeing production photos so, if you’ve got some from a production past, present or future, please send them along!

Be wary of writing advice that deals in absolutes. There is no wrong way to write.

Hush, sign. There is no wrong way. (Photo credit: Jack Zalium)
Writing advice comes in all types because so do writers. We all write very differently both in style and in process so it makes sense that writing advice doesn’t just come in one flavor. Let’s face it, there is never going to be that one single thing that works for everyone.
The best writing advice is the kind where the author explains what works for her and offers ways the reader could make it work for them. You walk away from an a...

You’ve got to stick out Camp NaNoWriMo until the very end! Here’s why…

No matter how badly this month is going (and I, too, am oh so behind) you’ve got to stick this Camp NaNoWriMo journey out until the very end because…
…my pep talk won’t come out until the end of the month and if you quit early, you’ll miss it!
Oh, yeah and blah, blah, blah, finishing your novel, realizing your dreams, whatever.
Now, back to more important things. Pep...

On cutting Really Good Writing from your manuscript

I was having a crisis over having to rewrite my entire book the other day and I finally realized that it came down to the realization that I would be tossing out a lot of writing. Not just writing but Really Good Writing. Every other time I’ve had to trash a project and redo it from scratch, it’s been in some rough state where I hadn’t spent nearly as many hours on every word as I did with Mistress Novel’s so called “final” draft. Here I was, about to toss out pages...

Not the answer I was expecting, but hard to argue with none the less

Knuffle Bunny: A Cautionary Tale (Photo credit: Wikipedia)
Long Suffering Husband is reading Knuffle Bunny to the toddler. They are enjoying it together and it’s a very sweet moment. He finishes and says, “That’s such a nice story. It’s just this dad hanging out with is daughter and the illustrations are so simple.”
And I’m expecting him to elaborate on that and say something sweet about spending time with his daughter and he says nothing so finally, I say, “Was there more to that thought?”
“Jus...

In which Sergei Prokofiev gets credit for a play I wrote half a century after his death
The Love of 3 Oranges is a Commedia D’ell Arte scenario by Carlo Gozzi around 1761. The play was later adapted in 2002 by the brilliant composer Sergei Prokofiev as a full stage play. -SOURCE.
Someone’s research went terribly wrong here.
Sergei Prokofiev wrote an opera version of Three Oranges in 1921. Prokofiev was most definitely dead by 2002 as he died in 1953.Hillary DePiano (aka me) wrote a stage play version of Three Oranges in 2002. Zombie Prokofiev was no help at all with it.
While norma...
