Book Banter EP 22: DJ Jamison, Part 2

Hello My Happy People,
I have to tell you, I am incredibly pumped after the interviews I have has recently with my friends DJ Jamison and Allie Alvis. These two women have created incredible careers for themselves and honestly it gives me hope that eventually I will find my way to achieving my own dreams and goals as a writer.
Have we got a podcast for you today!

I posted the first half of DJs interview last Wednesday, July 6th. It is live now. If you missed that and still want to check that out, you can find it on our website or your favorite podcast hosting service. In today's episode, we have part two of our interview. DJ reads from one of her books, Two Truths and a Lyle. This book is part of a free book promotion until the end of the year. You can find links for her book and the whole promotion below. If you check out her Amazon Author page you will see a number of her titles have more than 500 reviews and most carry a 4.3/5 rating on Amazon. Her books are very well received by readers. If you like romance and are looking for a new author, you really should check her out.

Allie's interview will go live Wednesday July 20th and 27th. I could have talked to her for hours if she would have let me. She has such an incredible wealth of knowledge about books, their history, publications and how they were created, their preservation and so much more. If you have any interest in such things, I highly suggest you check out her webpage and her social media. She has written some amazing articles that are more than worth the time it takes to sit and read them. Fascinating is the first word that comes to my mind when I think of her published works.

Believe it or not, I have been writing on my own WIP (work in progress), Into the West: Family Ties. It is still coming along a bit slower than I had hoped, but it is coming along. The story is slowly unfolding for me and I am moving ahead bit by bit. I still hope to have it ready to publish by the end of the month. P.R. has to go to the office two days next week so I will have the house to myself to write. P.R. is also going on a business trip soon so I will not have to think about making meals or keep chores done on certain days so we stay on our schedules.

Basically, I am envisioning that week probably be a throwback to when I was a teenager again and mom and dad left for a few days and left me with spending money.
I will likely live on rice and veggie chik'n nuggets for the week and just focus on finishing the book with a few breaks to play Fortnite (and walk Shaggy, of course!). I almost have the Darth Vader skin so I have to work in a few games before this season ends. I am so obsessed with getting that right now. I do have the Imperial March emote so now matter what happens, I'm happy.
I plan to have another sneak peek for what I have been writing sometime this week (if I don't forget. I've been rather absent minded lately). So be on the lookout for that. I'm also looking to bring you more great interviews very soon! I have a friend who has a business teaching others to create great video promos for their businesses, a new indie Sci-Fi author who just published her first book, and a librarian who works in the children's section of a public library. I am sure she will have some great tips on how to get children excited about reading.
I have so many great things in the works and I cannot wait to share it all with you! If you love books like we do, why not subscribe to our mailing list so you never miss out on any of the fun!
Have a great week!
Now, go forth and be happy!

Manic Monday: DJ Jamison, Allie Alvis, and More Podcast News!

Hello My Happy People,
So much is going on right now. I am trying my best to keep up and keep everything sorted out and on schedule. I have great news to start off, I have a podcast sponsor! Because of this amazing person, all of the podcast episodes from the very first one, are now available on your favorite podcast providers and you no longer have to go to my archives on the Members Only page to find shows that are more than 90 days old.
This is a huge relief for me so I do not have to keep up with loading up old shows to my website as they disappear from the host site. They take up a lot of my website storage space that I could be using for book information. Plus, I need to have fewer "upkeep" things to do so I can have more time to just write. Currently, I spend about 70% of my working time on other things, like promotions and social media, than I do actually writing my books. I need to change that.

So who is my sponsor, you might be wondering ...
P.R. Burckhardt, my better half. This was a tough decision for me to make. P.R. already supports me by giving me this time away from a regular (actual income-earning), 9-5 job as I can try to make this writing career viable. Because of this, I do not ever want P.R. to have to invest cash directly into anything for my writing career. P.R. already works so hard to support us and give us the great life we have, so I do not want to add financial burdens.
I had hoped I would have found something to generate enough income to be able to purchase the basic podcast hosting plan myself by now, but it just hasn't happened yet. I was only two weeks away from the first episode being deleted forever from my hosting site. I was getting desperate to save it and P.R. stepped up, forever my superhero!
My plan is that this needed sponsorship is only temporary. I am still working to find a way to take these payments over on my own very soon. No matter what, I am so thankful to have such a great supporter in my life! I am incredibly lucky!

I hope you all had a fantastic weekend and got a change to enjoy the first part of my interview with my friend, indie romance author, DJ Jamison. She has so much great information for anyone who is curious about MM romance books and some best practices for anyone interested in building their own indie author career.
This week we will have the second half of her interview where she reads from her book, Two Truths and Lyle, which is part of a big free MM romance book promotion available until the end of the year. Links to her free book and to the other books in this promotion can be found in my podcast descriptions and below in this blog.
Last week, I had a chance to sit down and catch up with another great friend, Allie Alvis. She is such a fascinating person, I could have talked to her for hours! Allie is currently a rare book cataloguer for Type Punch Matrix and former reference librarian for the Smithsonian Libraries and Archives Special Collections. She holds two masters degrees in Information Management & Digital Preservation and Material Culture & the History of the Book. Both were earned with merit. She has a vast wealth of knowledge and we only just barely scratched the surface in our interview.

Allie is also a social media maven who shares her knowledge under the name Book Historia. You can find her on YouTube, Twitter, Instagram, and she even has an Etsy site where she sells book related crafts. Her interview will be on our July 20th and 27th episodes. We talk about everything from how she went from a young adult working in a bookstore in Wichita, Kansas to working for the Smithsonian as her first job out of college.
Allie also gives us a great deal if insight into the world of book preservation, antiquated publication techniques that actually created poisonous books bindings, and the nefarious practices that took place behind the scenes in one particular book publication. I can't wait to edit this interview because honestly want to listen to it again myself!
So there you have it, so much going on! I actually worked on my current book, Into the West: Family Ties too. Watch for another sneak peek coming soon. In the meantime, be sure to check out these great podcasts and be sure to think of P.R. when you do.
If you love books like we do, you are going to love these podcasts!
Have a great week, now go forth and be happy!

Book Banter Podcast EP 21: DJ Jamison Interview

Hello My Happy People,
Have we got a treat for you today!
In today's episode, I get a chance to catch up with my friend, romance author, DJ Jamison. DJ shares how she transitioned from working for years as a newspaper copy editor to being a successful indie MM romance author. She shares some of the benefits and challenges of writing romance and her goals as an indie author.
The interview was so fun and informative that it went well beyond the normal 20 minute podcasts I tend to have, so the interview is divided between this week's episode and will conclude next week with DJ reading from her book, Two Truths and a Lyle. This book is currently part of a free promotion. For more information and to get your free copy, see the links below.
So settle in for a great interview with DJ Jamison. Listen now.
Enjoy,

Manic Monday: Interviews are Happening!

Hello My Happy People!
Have I got some great news for all of you. I have some amazing interviews to share with you very soon. I am so blessed to have such amazing friends! I have years of working in journalism, book sales, advertising and public relations. Because of this, I have a lot of connections with people who work as writers, publishers, editors, librarians, designers, PR specialists, and more. Since I started my podcast, and even since I decided to become and indie author, it has been a goal of mine to create a network to share as much knowledge of these fields as possible with others who were trying to build careers as indie authors and with the readers who love their work.
I am so excited to tell you that I am starting to see the beginnings of this network. It began with my mom coming on my show and interviewing her to figure out my equipment set up and creating a sample interview so others could hear my style and know what to expect on my show. Then a dear friend and successful western author, Mark L. Redmond, gave me a chance and let me help introduce his new book series.
This week I have more friends who have taken the time to chat with me about their careers. I know you are going to love these interviews with two incredible women. The experiences and knowledge they share are fascinating and will appeal to writers and readers alike.
I hope to have these interviews broadcasting ASAP. I have almost finished the post production on DJ's interview and will be announcing the broadcast date as soon as it is set. I am scheduled to interview Allie on Monday and will announce the dates for that broadcast when it is available.

DJ Jamison
Last week, I had the chance to catch up with my friend, successful indie romance author, DJ Jamison. We talked about her transition from newspaper editor to prolific MM romance author.
DJ and I talked so much, I am splitting the interview into two shows. In part two, DJ reads from one of her books which happens to be part of a free book promo going on until the end of the year. Check the links below for more information on this giveaway and be sure to watch our social media for broadcast dates for this interview. We just have a bit more production work to finish up then we plan to share it with all of you as soon as possible!

Allie Alvis
I am actually writing this blog on Sunday because Monday I will be talking with my friend, rare book cataloguer, Allie Alvis.
Allie has published manuscripts, several articles and blogs about books and their histories. She even creates some great book accessories which you can find for sale on Etsy. Allie started her career at the Smithsonian and now works for Type Punch Matrix.
Allie also writes, produces, edits, and presents “Bite Sized Book History,” a series of short videos introducing physical aspects of rare books.
If you like books at all you will not want to miss this interview!
Be sure to watch our social media for broadcast dates. Better yet, join our mailing list and never miss an update on great podcast guests, book releases, and so much more. See links below to sign up now.
I have so much to do and am working hard on finishing my last book in my Into the West Saga Serial, Into the West: Family Ties and to bring you more great podcast guests so ... I'm going to get back to work!
Have a great Monday! Now go forth, and be happy!

Friday Funnies: Summertime is Fun Time!

Hello My Happy People,
It seems like the news lately is just getting more and more depressing. We here at Burckhardt Books are very politically active in our personal lives, but we want to keep our business pages as an oasis where people can come and find an escape from the real world in our fiction and on our social media while we fight the good fight in the real world.
We want to spread happiness and joy and what better way to do that than with some great Dad Jokes! This blog is not going to have a lot of my usual blathering because I am very hard at work to bring you some great new entertainment. I am working on finishing the final book in my Into the West Saga Serial, part 7, Into the West: Family Ties. Plus, I have been scheduling some amazing guest interviews for our Book Banter with Dianne Burckhardt podcast.
I went to journalism school, worked at different publications, and also worked for a big chain bookseller for more than 13 years. Because of these experiences, I had the privilege of becoming friends with some pretty amazing people who either already had or have gone on to build careers in writing, publishing, library history and sciences, and now I am hitting them all up to be guests on our podcast so all of you can get to know them and their work too!

Manic Monday: Down the Rabbit Hole!

(Photo by Yan Krukov from Pexels)
Hello My Happy People,
I have been thoroughly not enjoying the rainy weather we have right now. Storms keep coming and going and the constantly fluctuating barometric pressure is messing with my head. It is so hard for me to concentrate when things like this are going on constantly. I have been trying to work, but I get so easily distracted. I start to work, get lost in a side task, and then I look up and it's 9 or 10 at night and I have accomplished only a small portion of what I had actually planned to get done on the book.
My husband is doing his best to help keep me on task. He is even giving me his own deadlines for word counts to finish by a certain day. If I do not meet his deadlines, I get "punished" by him taking on more cooking and chores so I can finish my writing. Before you ask, no, I do not miss them on purpose. But I seriously have no idea how I get so lost in pointless, mindless things sometimes. I feel like I drop down a rabbit hole some days and have no idea how to get focused. Thank God my husband makes the best support team ever though. I would be way worse without him!
In fact, even with these issues I have gotten quite a bit more done on the book than I expected to have written by this point so that is good, but it is not nearly enough. The concentration problems are a real disruptor. To give an example, I had thought of a great thing to do for my podcast, Book Banter with Dianne Burckhardt (, but when I went to go prep it, I had completely forgotten my idea. I still have not remembered it. I'm working on recovering that memory. All I remember is I wanted to do the same things the first Wednesday of every month like I used to always do with the Monday Movie Madness blogs and still do with the Friday Funnies. I know it was book related (duh), but that is all I can remember. I hate these moments. They are so frustrating!
Speaking of the podcast though, I have gotten commitments from more authors who want to come on my podcast and share their work. We are just struggling with scheduling issues. It's hard when the times zones are 7 hours or more apart. We will not just be sticking with historical fiction authors, we are branching out into all genres. So we will likely have a guest or two whose work is not your cup of tea, but I want to support as many indie authors as possible no matter what their subject matter or target market.
Personally, I happen to be a very open minded person and the podcast will be a reflection of that openness. I plan to uphold my commitment to inclusivity for all in my guest authors. I try to live my belief that my job on earth is to just be a good person, love my fellow humans, and leave all judgment to a higher power. I want to actively spread that message now more than ever.
We will also have some guest talk about how to improve marketing skills for indie authors and anyone who is self-employed and working on a budget. Marketing can be the hardest part for an indie author or self-employed entrepreneur so I want to find as many guests who can give pointers for us all.
I thought about adding a segment where I give a writing prompt at the end of my podcasts and ask people to write a short piece from it. Then anyone who wants can send in their piece to have it read in the next podcast. If I get a few I will randomly draw one or two. It just seems like something fun to do. Maybe even post them on our website and have people vote on them and maybe once or twice a year give out a prize for the piece with the most votes. It's a thought.
If you have any ideas of things you would like to hear in my podcast, just drop us a line, use the chat box on the main page of this website, or leave a comment on this blog. We would love to hear from everyone!
Enough rambling for today ... back to work!
Go forth and be happy, people!

Friday Funnies: Rain, rain GO AWAY!

Hello My Happy People,
Today is going to be very short. If you caught the podcast yesterday, you know storms are in our area and throwing my plans off. I'm having a very difficult time concentrating and will just go rest for today. Something I am not good at doing. I always feel like I have to soldier on no matter what. But as I get older, I find my body often has a different opinion about such things.
I know I was going to do a sneak peek from Into the West: Family Ties, but I think I will save that for Monday. The worst of the storms should hopefully pass by then.
Have a great weekend, Happy People!
