Phewwww that’s it, my top 20 Chinese dramas to watch during the coronavirus pandemic.
This was a difficult list to make. I’ve lost track of the number of Chinese dramas I’ve watched over the last few years and it’s really hard narrowing the best ones.
Even my little human enjoys watching Chinese dramas with me. As she’s only 5 years old and just learning to read, she loves identifying words she knows.
Do let me know which of the dramas you get into and if your little ones like reading subtitles too.
What other dramas are you watching now that we have to self-isolate and stay at home during the coronavirus pandemic??
Would you like me to make a list of my favourite Chinese dramas in modern times?? Please do leave a comment below

Synopsis of The Outlander War: Book 3 of the Forever Avalon Series
It is an island frozen in time and space. For more than 3,000 years, the island of Avalon remained hidden from the outside world; a place of eternal magic, where the descendants of King Arthur ruled over a land filled with magical creatures, Elves, Dwarves and dragons. The island was only accessible through a rift in the Bermuda Triangle, where mariners and aviators disappeared throughout history. No one believed Avalon was anything but a myth.
In the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, in the heart of a naval exercise, Avalon suddenly reappeared, causing disruptions on both fronts. The US Navy, now circling the mysterious island, wants answers. On Avalon, they fear Outlanders would intrude on their home; and caught in the middle of it all is Lord Bryan MoonDrake, the Gil-Gamesh of Avalon, Knight Eternal and champion of the magical realm.
The Gil-Gamesh was once a US Navy sailor, lost at sea in a freak storm, who found his way to Avalon. After his family followed him to the island, they decided to stay and make this their home. Now they are torn between loyalty to their new home and compassion for their old one.
The tensions build as modern technology faces off against ancient magic on an island where the laws of magic supersede the laws of science, causing mechanical weapons to falter and shut down. As military forces continue to surround the mysterious island, bringing both sides to the brink of war, an ancient evil arises from within, one that has been seeking the throne of New Camelot for three millennia.
Name of chapter: Chapter 1 – Avalon Returns
Captain Larry Rich sat in his chair on the bridge of the USS Theodore Roosevelt, savouring a fresh cup of coffee as he watched the flight deck crew scrambling to get ready for the first launch of the day. As the captain of an aircraft carrier, he commanded more than 6,000 sailors on one of the largest warships afloat.
Rich reflected on this past year. He recently had taken command of the warship, back at sea for the first time after an extended shipyard overhaul and carrier qualifications. The ship was operating in the Caribbean as part of ‘Global Triad’, a joint exercise with combined US and South American forces. This was the first major exercise of combat readiness for the ship and Captain Rich wanted to make sure there were no hiccups on deck. As a former ‘Air Boss’ of an aircraft carrier, he knew what it took to keep the action on deck moving, so he expected the same from his crew.
The only thing Larry hated about the exercise was its location. Call him superstitious, but he never liked flying or sailing anywhere near the Bermuda Triangle. This notorious stretch of ocean had long plagued mariners and pilots due to reports of countless, strange disappearances happening there.
For Larry, it was personal. He lost a good sailor—and the sailor’s family—to the Triangle. Chief Bryan Drake worked for Captain Rich as Air Boss on USS George Washington. He mentored and moulded Bryan into being one of the top sailors in his command. During a particularly bad storm, Chief Drake saved a sailor from going overboard and ended up in the soup himself. Less than a year later, his wife and children disappeared near the same spot while paying their respects. Only his oldest daughter, Ashley, had survived the ordeal.
“Captain, the Air Boss says he’s ready to go.” An officer’s voice returned Larry’s thoughts to the present. “Request permission to turn the ship into the wind to begin flight operations.”
“Permission granted,” Captain Rich said. Within minutes, the aircraft carrier turned and its speed increased to give the flight deck perfect conditions to launch aircraft. As soon as the recovery helicopters lifted off into the air, the first aircraft were lined up on the catapult, ready to launch. Captain Rich took another sip of coffee and sat back in his chair to watch the action unfold.
Without warning, a loud, inhuman roar pierced the air, causing the Captain to spit out his coffee. He looked out the window, forward and aft, thinking maybe it was an explosion on deck, but everything appeared to be normal, aside from the flight deck crew being just as stunned by the unexplained sound. Suddenly, a wave of luminous energy cascaded toward them from the west, flooding the air as it swept across the ship, sparking off the deck and aircraft like static electricity.
Every instrument on the ship and in the aircraft—on deck and in the air—shut down for a split-second before flickering back to life.
Captain Rich opened his mouth to request a status report from the nearest officer when he noticed a wall of water, more than 200 feet tall, rushing toward his helpless ship. There was no time to react before it was upon him. It lifted the carrier into the sky, rolling it out and about, before rushing past.
Miraculously, the ship and its crew were safe. Everyone on the bridge watched as the wave headed east toward the coast of the United States. Captain Rich knew the potential devastation it could cause. “Get on the horn to Fleet Forces Command and warn them about that wave.”
“Aye-aye, sir!” the officer acknowledged.
“Captain! Look!” one sailor shouted, as he pointed out the window. Captain Rich turned around, and his eyes grew as wide as hen’s eggs. He couldn’t believe what he saw. Out in the ocean, an island had appeared from nowhere. It sat more than a mile from the carrier and its coastline stretched southeast beyond the horizon. To make matters stranger, a second island, this one smaller with a towering mountain in the middle, hovered in the air just off the larger island’s coast. Waterfalls flowed out of the mountain and into the clouds below that formed a ring around the base.
“What the hell is that?” someone asked, as shock settled in.
“Sound General Quarters! This is not a drill!” the Captain ordered, as he rushed out onto the bridge wing with a pair of binoculars in hand. As the clanging bells and whistles sounded the general alarm across the ship, sailors rushed to get to their battle stations. Captain Rich stared at the floating island through the binoculars, trying to comprehend exactly what he saw.
As he examined the floating land mass, he saw something even more extraordinary. Flying about the central peak were creatures of myth and legend that half of his brain recognised immediately, and the other half rejected outright.
He blinked several times and the creatures didn’t disappear. They were dragons. He couldn’t deny it. They moved in and out of various cave openings in the mountain as if it were their home.
“Captain!” the nearest officer shouted. “Contact South, Southwest over that island!”
“What is it?” Captain Rich asked.
“Unknown, sir. It’s something no one’s ever seen before, and it’s moving very slowly!”
Captain Rich looked through his binoculars and was equally as stunned as his crew. A wooden ship, like an old, Spanish galleon with full sails and canvas wings, soared through the air toward the floating island. The surprises kept getting bigger and bigger, and Captain Rich didn’t need any more surprises.
“Tell CAG to put a Hawkeye in the air immediately. I want to know how big that island is. Send up a couple of Hornets as its escort. Also, shut down all external communications. I don’t want somebody’s pictures or video ending up on YouTube or Facebook until we know what we’re dealing with.”
The captain’s orders were quickly relayed. The CAG, or Carrier Air Group commander, helped air operations get the right planes into position and ready to launch, along with its fighter escorts. Even with all this, Captain Rich knew he needed some more guidance from his chain of command on how to deal with this.
“Get me Fleet Forces Command, now,” he shouted. “This is completely beyond me.”

Karlyle Tomms: You Can Overcome, Never Give Up
Karlyle Tomms is today’s guest on The Segilola Salami Show podcast. Karlyle is an author who shares with us his writing journey thus far and what he’s learned from it. I assure you, you need to click play now to listen to this most intriguing conversation with Karlyle Tomms.

About Karlyle Tomms
I am an award winning author. My first novel, “Confessions from the Pumpkin Patch” was also endorsed by Marideth Sisco who was instrumental in the soundtrack for and had a role in the four time Oscar nominated film, “Winter’s Bone” starring Jennifer Lawrence.
My books are about life’s misfits, those who have been rejected by society, those who try to find a place in the world after experiencing difficult and traumatic lives, and those who find themselves and overcome in that process. My books are set historically in the 1960’s and 70’s. The fourth novel, when it is finished, will come up into the 1990’s. These are not only books about a protagonist who struggles to overcome intense adversity, but are also glimpses into the history and culture of the time. I take great care to research the timelines in which my characters live and also depict what was going on around them during those times in our recent history.
Karlyle Tomms’s tips, based on his experiences, on How to love yourself and hold your head up, no matter who you are or what you have been through.
I have overcome. I am a gay man, orphaned and raised in rural poverty in a fundamentalist religion during the 1960’s. I have experience bullying, abuse, and intense self-loathing. I have struggled to overcome and accept myself, love myself for who I am for most of my life.
When I was 18 years old, my first year of college, I immediately sought therapy. It was a time when the world was still struggling with accepting gay people, and a few of those therapists attempted to convert me, but it was my spiritual mentors who brought me to the point of loving myself for who I am. Eventually therapy caught up, but the main thing I did was to have the faith to know that there was a better way of living, the commitment to find it and a willingness not to give up. I learned spiritual principles that helped me to overcome and accept myself, and I continue to apply those spiritual principles.
My novels are entertaining, but there are moments of edification scattered throughout the stories. My novels are graphic. I don’t hold back, because life doesn’t hold back. My novels are heartwarming-eventually- and ultimately they are stories about love.
Many of the customer reviews of my books are from readers who say they were immediately drawn into the stories and had a hard time putting it down. I realize that is cliche, but I write powerful stories about powerful people who do not realize initially that they are powerful. A good novel never reveals all the secrets until the end and saves the best secret for last. I have had people tell me that they cried at the end, in a good and heartwarming way. Perhaps the best compliment I ever got, in my opinion, about my writing is the comment on one of the magazine articles I wrote back in the 1990’s, “You have the ability to reach into a person’s soul, pull their guts out, hold them up and say, ‘Look at this! These are your guts!'” What I can promise is that my stories are never mundane.
A paragraph from Chapter 8 of “The Calling Dream”: Terror crossed Momma’s face, and a wail came out of her like an animal caught in a steel trap. She fell half to her knees on the floor, sobbing and grabbing at the air like her very soul was being torn out of her. I ran to her side, unable to hold back my own tears, and Hannah, also crying, came up behind her on the other side with a comforting hand to her back. “Momma…Momma…Momma,” I cried.

Character Interview: Modern Day Fables by Jason Petersen and Aarti Patel
This week’s Character Interview is from the contemporary book Modern Day Fables by Jason Petersen and Aarti Patel. It was published by D2 Books and is currently only available as a Paperback (ISBN 978-0996775922, 05.08.16) and an eBook (Amazon ASIN B01FTBY9UG, 05.16.16). Modern Day Fables by Jason Petersen and Aarti Patel is aimed at readers aged 18+ but it contains no adult themes.
Synopsis of Modern Day Fables by Jason Petersen and Aarti Patel
Fables encourage kids to think about the question, “What would you do?” They’re not simply dry lessons on how to live life, but rather imaginative adventures with clever outcomes. Adults need fables too! Modern Day Fables presents eleven stories that ask the reader to dive in to the modern day dilemma at hand:
-Would you rather live in a screen or in the real world?
-Would you join a club that promises to take all your pain away?
-Would you indulge a magical looking pharmaceutical pill that brings you to a new level of enlightenment and eliminates all anxiety in life?
Not everything is as it appears on the surface. Bend, twist, and unfold reality through these fables that ultimately question the status quo and ask both the adult and kid in you: What would you do?
Name of character to be interviewed
Misha
Why was this character chosen for this interview?
Misha bravely introduces the first short story in this collection, venturing out to a place where no one has ever gone before: behind the screen. While there, she must answer a question upon which her very survival depends.
Question 1: How did you come to embark on this adventure?
Answer: It seemed like an ordinary day for me in San Francisco. I was to zoom in for work pretty soon, but before that time arrived, my big screen rang. I answered the call and it was my friend Tsai, who I used to work with a long time ago. You might say, well what’s the big deal? Well, these days people don’t contact each other out in the real world much…the way Tsai was doing. I hadn’t heard from anyone in a long time, because interaction was limited to the virtual world. Tsai needed to see me. I was comforted, yet alarmed to hear from her. Nevertheless, I had to see her and find out what was wrong.
Question 2: Why did you think that something was wrong when Tsai called?
Answer: Well, it’s like you see cats and dogs everyday and then a zebra runs out from nowhere. People don’t talk in the real world. Something had to be amiss for her to want to reach out in this unusual manner. Don’t get me wrong, I like talking to old friends. It’s just that no one does that on a real level anymore, other than inside the screen. Naturally, when I heard from Tsai after many years without contact, over an actual honest to goodness phone call, I was somewhat worried.
Question 3: What did you do next?
Answer: I agreed to meet with her. She wanted to hang out in the real world, not the virtual one. I was looking forward to it. It’s like you haven’t had a home cooked meal in a while, and you’re craving that. That’s how I felt about seeing her. Even if something was wrong, I felt I could help her out. I’d do whatever I could to help out a friend in need. She knew that.
Question 4: You have a little twitch there in your hand. Are you okay?
Answer: Oh, that’s just the buzz. You don’t know about it? It’s pretty common these days. People get it from being inside the screen too much. That’s the world we live in though. The buzz is involuntary, and it comes and goes for me. For some people it’s mild, for others it can get worse. I have some medicine that my friend Earl gave me while I was working in the screen, at Mind Memo. There’s more to that story, but I know we don’t have too much time right now to cover it all. Long story short, my medicine helps keep the buzz under control. I thought maybe Tsai was calling me about the buzz, and I was ready to offer some of my medicine if she needed it.
I know that living and working inside the screen, like so many people do, is not easy. If Tsai was dealing with challenges that were similar to what I’d gone through, I could offer her some support. That was my thinking anyway. Instead of being able to directly help her, however, I found myself closer to the screen than I ever imagined I would be.
Question 5: What question did you have to answer in order to survive? Did you have any help?
Answer: The question was:
“Who was she while she was on the screen?” My friend Earl asked me after telling me the story of how the big screen was invented. You may not understand what that question means, but it was at the core of everything I, and many other people, were facing.
As far as help, it may sound silly, but my dog came with me that day. His name is Poof. He gets so excited when I zoom back out of the screen. I couldn’t just leave him at home worrying about me when I left to meet up with Tsai. Poof has always been a bit wary of the big screen, with his little doggy senses. Maybe he knew that taking him would help me summon the courage I needed. Call me crazy, but I felt in my gut that heading out that day was a big deal. When you don’t talk to people very often in person, it’s kind of scary to try it out again. But it was more than that. Whatever had divided me and Tsai all these years, the big screen, it seemed like it was coming out to lunch with us too. Even though we were meeting in the real world, the imprint of the screen couldn’t be fully escaped. I had no idea just how right I was about that, or what I was about to discover.

May Fly
Why was this character chosen for this interview?
May Fly is the lead character in this short story, and she begins by believing that her wings are too small to allow her to accomplish all that she wishes. She soon finds that being patient and allowing her wings to grow in their own time will only help her to achieve her dreams.
Question 1: Tell us about yourself, May.
Answer: I’m May Fly. I’m a mayfly named May, and I dream of flying through the sky someday.
Question 2: Why do you wish to fly?
Answer: I want to be where mayflies go. Up, up and soaring away. Swooping through the sky to frolic and play.
Question 3: What is it you think you’ll find?
Answer: I hope to find adventure and fun. There are millions of us, I’m not the only one. But we’re all unique, in our own little way, and that’s what makes me enjoy each day.
Question 4: What’s different today, that may not have been yesterday?
Answer: My wings started small, but then they grew. In fact, we all start out little and this includes YOU.
Question 5: What advice do you have for your friends?
Answer: Hang in there and don’t fret, you will fly too, even if not yet. Patience is key and, knowing you’re growing, should be just enough to keep your smile showing.
