Stirring The Soul
A comet slicing through the sky
The grumble of thunder
Over a valley
The splash of stars
On the cosmic sea
The first flakes of snow
The flaming trees of spring
The swaying palms
On a lonely island
The space between
Lightning and thunder
The smell of rain
On summer grass
The moon’s spotlight
On a flat ocean
Nature is the greatest hint
Of God’s existence
The grumble of thunder
Over a valley
The splash of stars
On the cosmic sea
The first flakes of snow
The flaming trees of spring
The swaying palms
On a lonely island
The space between
Lightning and thunder
The smell of rain
On summer grass
The moon’s spotlight
On a flat ocean
Nature is the greatest hint
Of God’s existence

Beware
Beware the billionaires
The millionaires
The trust fund kids
The people who
Could retire tomorrow
The people who have no risk
Of homelessness
Of going hungry
Of desperation
Beware of their opinions
Of the state of the world
The world that
They look down upon
From their ivory towers
Beware these people
They are not your friends
They don’t care about poor people
They care about money
They care about maintaining
Their high-flying lifestyle
At your expense
The millionaires
The trust fund kids
The people who
Could retire tomorrow
The people who have no risk
Of homelessness
Of going hungry
Of desperation
Beware of their opinions
Of the state of the world
The world that
They look down upon
From their ivory towers
Beware these people
They are not your friends
They don’t care about poor people
They care about money
They care about maintaining
Their high-flying lifestyle
At your expense

The Fallen Apple
When I was a boy
I was determined not
To become my parents
I saw their lives
Their stress
Their mistakes
And being so smug
And self-assured
I just knew
I wouldn’t be like them
I was too smart
I knew that I
Wouldn’t get stuck
In a dead-end 9-5
Or get married
Or buy a house
Or have a kid
And yet
As time has gone on
I look at the time
And I realise
I’ve made
All the same mistakes
They have
If not worse
And I’m right on schedule
And it would be so easy
To blame genetics
Or society
Or lack of free will
But the cold hard truth
Of it is
I’ve simply been my parents
All along
I was determined not
To become my parents
I saw their lives
Their stress
Their mistakes
And being so smug
And self-assured
I just knew
I wouldn’t be like them
I was too smart
I knew that I
Wouldn’t get stuck

Stoicism Or Repression?
When a man
Has a bad day
And when anger
Or sadness
Wells within
Like a caged tiger
And when his wife
Hugs him at the door
And asks:
How are you?
And he replies
“I’m fine”
Before walking away
Leaving behind a loud
Silence
What is it:
Stoicism or repression?
Has a bad day
And when anger
Or sadness
Wells within
Like a caged tiger
And when his wife
Hugs him at the door
And asks:
How are you?
And he replies
“I’m fine”
Before walking away
Leaving behind a loud
Silence
What is it:
Stoicism or repression?

The Homeless
We walk past the homeless
Like they’re a piece
Of trash
Or a Salvos person
Hoping they won’t
Ask for charity
For decency
For humanity
Besides, who carries cash
these days?
Like they’re a piece
Of trash
Or a Salvos person
Hoping they won’t
Ask for charity
For decency
For humanity
Besides, who carries cash
these days?

Perfection
It’s tempting
To not touch perfection
Whether it's an unread book
Or an unpainted canvas
Or that woman in the cafe
Waiting to be asked out
But perfection
Is a fantasy
That wears off
In the mind
After a while
And so it’s better to
Open the book
Paint the painting
Ask out the girl
And risk
A bad book
A messy painting
A woman’s rejection
Because imperfection
Is all we get
In this harsh
Beautiful world
And that’s just fine
Because perfection
Is for Heaven
And we’re not there
Yet
To not touch perfection
Whether it's an unread book
Or an unpainted canvas
Or that woman in the cafe
Waiting to be asked out
But perfection
Is a fantasy
That wears off
In the mind
After a while
And so it’s better to

Bottled Memories
I would do anything
To bottle moments
From the rose-tinted past
Ones that
On lonely
Nostalgic days
I could pull
From a dusty drawer
Uncork it
And take a smell
Or drink
However the magic works
And be transported
To that precious moment
Where things were simpler
Happier
Seemingly forever
And soak it in
If only for a moment
Before corking
The bottle
And returning
To a present
That will hopefully
Be bottled
In the future
To bottle moments
From the rose-tinted past
Ones that
On lonely
Nostalgic days
I could pull
From a dusty drawer
Uncork it
And take a smell
Or drink
However the magic works
And be transported
To that precious moment
Where things were simpler
Happier
Seemingly forever
And soak it in
If only for a moment
