Second is coming…

The Importance of Community

Yes, this is going to be a blog about finding your tribe.

But, there’s a little more to it than that.

When it comes to pursuing any kind of artistic profession, you are making yourself vulnerable. The reality is that even the things that you make that don’t feel personal are still filled with the fingerprints of who you are and what goes on in your mind at any given point in time.

This is very good, but also very scary.

Sharing your art is like sharing a part of yourself with the world, and that’s not something everyone is comfortable with. This is why I consider it to be so important that you have your go to people when it comes time to share the art that you made.

These people are your fellow writers, your colleagues, your friends, and anyone else who knows about your passion and is willing to screen it. I can’t tell you enough how invaluable it is to discuss a story idea with a group of my writing friends and really talk it out.

If you want to make a moment come to life, that’s how you do you.

You talk about the scene again and again. You discuss the characters and their motivations. You discuss the actions. You discuss what everyone in that scene is feeling.

Those friends of yours will be the ones to tell you when that doesn’t work out.

There is no better way to realize how little you’ve actually thought about an idea until a friend asks a question about it that you don’t know how to answer. It’s disorienting, but it’s great because it makes you think your idea through.

This is the best possible way to avoid the reviews that say “Okay, that was great but what about XYZ?”

You might have spent two months thinking about an idea and still have been too close to the topic to realize that you overlooked a really obvious loophole.

Everyone does it. Even professional writers do it, but no one likes doing it.

Your tribe isn’t only good for pointing out the mistakes in your books, but also for cheering you on and rooting for your success.

When you publish your first book, your heart will feel like it is going to explode while you wait to hear what people think about it, but having your tribe makes it bearable.

Those are people who love you, love your idea, and want to see you succeed, and that’s a great thing to have when you’re making art because the reality is that not everyone will like what you make.

These people are your champions, your guides, and your loving critics who only want to see you make the best possible thing you can.

Writing is often presented as a lonely life, but it doesn’t have to be.

In my opinion, it shouldn’t be.

Get out there and find your people. You’ll be glad that you did.

Chasing Your Dreams!

Succeeding in an artistic field can seem nearly impossible.

Why shouldn’t it? Society consistently paints a reality where the only way to succeed in art is through chance or by some bizarre miracle that suddenly makes the individual unbelievably famous and successful.

I write books for a living, and I’d like to act as proof that you don’t have to wait on a miracle, and more importantly, that success is what you make it out to be.

The movies almost always get it wrong.

The coffee intake levels are probably appropriate in most films, but that’s about as realistic as it gets when it comes to making a living as a writer.

I’m not here to tell you to quit your job and chase your passion.

Of course, if you have the financial ability to do that, by all means.

What I’m here to tell you is that you don’t have to quit your day job to make art. We love to push this idea of it being impossible to make art or write books without throwing away your crummy old day job and just flat-out pursuing it.

That isn’t always possible, but it also isn’t necessary.

Your job in life is to find what you’re passionate about. That might be one thing, and it might be a lot of things. My advice to you is to find something that speaks to who you are as a person and pursue it under any circumstances.

This does not mean quitting your day job to write a book, although it can.

When I say find it and pursue it, I mean you find something that you love and you do it regardless of what you think might be standing in your way. I’m talking about your crappy day job. I’m talking about the kids. I’m talking about the laundry that needs doing.

All of it.

Life is always going to be there. There will always be something that you need to do, something that you feel might be a more “practical” use of your time, but at the end of the day, you need to commit to your passions.

If you want to know the difference between wanting to be a writer and being one, it’s the commitment.

The chance that someone is going to knock on your door and offer to pay you to pursue your passions is probably pretty unlikely, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t pursue them.

All that it means is that you have to be willing to put in the hard work. The hard work isn’t always going to be spending the hours writing your story, but rather working all day, making dinner, feeding the pets, and then spending the hours to write your story.

It’s hard, but it’s the only way that you’re going to get better, and getting better at your craft is the best thing that you can do for a future career.

At the end of the day, my advice is to pursue your craft and pursue it hard. Get better. Make your art. Do your thing.

Get out there, do your best, and then share it with us.

Fallen Kingdoms Chronicles! How this has changed my LIFE!

Fallen Kingdoms Chronicles

Murder is bad, but that is especially true when you’re the one being accused of it.

In my novel, Lamp of Light: Only the Light will Prove Her Innocence, which is the first book in my Fallen Kingdoms series, Esther Anna is the queen of Tibethia.

Now, being a queen might sound like a great time, but that stops being true when someone murders your husband, the King, and then frames you for it.

Esther Anna has to cope with the loss of a beloved husband, bear the weight of knowing who killed him while being unable to do anything about it, and deal with the betrayal of her step-daughter, Noelle, who immediately sentences Esther to death for killing the King.

Noelle is fully aware that Esther did not kill King Lachance, but Esther has to run if she wants to stand a chance at surviving. Before long, Esther realizes that she isn’t just running from the King’s Guard, but a Wendigo named Damian who will stop at nothing to find her.

When a Fairy Prince by the name of Philip tells her of a mysterious artifact that can prove her innocence and finally set the record straight in the kingdom, Esther heads off to track this thing down while maintaining a solid distance ahead of Damian the Wendigo who absolutely means to harm her.

Even when Esther finds out that the artifact is supposedly guarded by a treacherous, unstoppable sea creature, she realizes that she will stop at nothing to prove her innocence.

Esther is running away from one monster and towards another, but she’s determined to see the truth out and to awaken her people to the mysterious shadow pulling the strings of her court.

This book brings you on a whirlwind adventure as this dedicated Queen gives everything she has to prove to her people that she is innocent so that she can save them from unspeakable horrors.

This story is close to my heart, and I really do believe that fans of my work will be happy with it. I know I am, and I can’t wait to bring you more from this dark and terrible world.

A phenomenal author. The story follows the Queen Esther Anna who has been framed as her husband’s murderer by her stepdaughter, Princess Noelle, and her quest to clear her name. A twisted spin on the traditional snow white fairy tale, with a lovely flow. At times very innocent, and other times very twisted, it is an enjoyable story for any fantasy lover. I personally really like twisted takes on the traditional Disney stories.

For lovers of the tv show Once Upon a Time, this story will offer you the flavor of the whole “different fairy tales intertwining into one grand storyline”, while the flow and structure are different to give you a refreshing new take on it, in ways the tv show did not explore. In addition, the horror premise of the story makes the twists and turns and the roles of the characters more skewered and dark to add another layer of fun in contrast to the traditional Disney tales.

As someone who has read a few of the author’s works, I highly recommend him.

 

The Bennett Witch Chronicles “LOVE!!!!”

As you all know, there are few things that I love more than a good fantasy novel.

This is why when it became an option for me to join the collection of brilliant and talented authors who would be writing the various novellas for The Vampire Diaries: The Bennett Witch chronicles, I couldn’t say no.

To be fair, under no circumstances would I have said no even if it was an option.

The Bennett Witch Chronicles are a collaborative effort to expand upon a world that some of you should already know and love. There are plenty of individual novellas written by various authors, and I think it’s safe to say that we all had a lot of fun playing our part in this, and I think the results were great.

I’m really excited about this story and I’m thrilled that I get to share it with you all.

My novella, Temple of the Forgotten (formally The Vampire Diaries: Bennett Witch Chronicles – Temple of the Forgotten) is one I had a really great time writing. It focuses on the delightful Bonnie Bennett. Bonnie is a character that I had a lot of fun with, and I’m happy to have been given the opportunity to write part of her story.

This story follows this daring young witch on her journey as she continues to explore the world around her. Lately, Bonnie has been having some pretty strange dreams, and she can’t shake the feeling that there might be more to them than what she ate before bed.

Chasing her dreams, Bonnie finds herself on a trip to Simla in India where she meets the mysterious Manu, a young witch who has recently discovered her powers. Things are never that simple for Bonnie and it becomes apparent that Manu might need saving from herself.

Bonnie didn’t plan on teaching a young witch, but someone’s got to do it and it looks like it’s up to her.

And we aren’t even going to talk about the deep, disturbing darkness that has manifested as a terrifying creature that lies in wait, hidden away in a local temple.

Bonnie and I had a great time bringing this story to life, and I am certain that you’re going to love this short little window into her reality where she’s probably going to get into a lot of trouble.

I freely admit I have been the hugest Vampire Diaries fan, (I even lured my mom over to the dark side and got her hooked on it, literally she watches the series over and over!) so when I seen that Kindle Worlds was gonna take on the Vampire Diaries I was beyond stoked, so this was the first one I picked up. I hadn’t read anything by this author before so it was a double bonus for me!

This book starts off with an ominous dream where Bonnie Bennett encounters this little girl in need of help, and of course Bonnie being Bonnie haha immediately feels drawn to help out. So she travels to India where she realizes that there are supernatural elements at play and that she is the only one who can help out the people in this town.

I loved getting to catch up with Bonnie and we even see Damon and Elena as well, it seems like the story picks up after the series left off and I for one really appreciate that people really pushed for the what happens next aspect since to me the series finale seemed really rushed. (Or maybe it just seemed that way to me because I wasn’t quite ready to let it go yet.) but I think this is a perfect way to discover new authors and get more time with our favorite characters! This is the first one of this series that I picked up and I know I will be grabbing all of the others as well.

The Amazing K.N. Lee

Every budding writer has the books that inspire them.

When you begin publishing and truly begin your writing journey, I’ve found that more often than just being inspired by books these days, I’m ending up inspired by their authors.

Of course, I love the books. Books still inspire me. I wouldn’t write them if they didn’t.

It’s just that what’s even better than a well written story for me is an author who is brilliant enough to craft these tales that I hold so dear.

This blog post is a giant shout-out to New York Times bestselling author K. N. Lee!

The question with any blog post is: where to start?

Fortunately, this blog post is going to be one giant gush-fest over how great and inspiring K. N. Lee is.

You might think, upon doing a quick internet search, that K. N. Lee has the best book covers around. I’m inclined to agree, but her amazing covers are really just an accurate representation of the amazing words within.

Seriously, guys, she’s really great at what she does.

N. Lee writes beautiful, elegant urban fantasy stories that are so full of vivid characters and awe-inspiring worlds that I can’t even do it a true service with words. And I make money writing, so that’s pretty serious.

If you like dragons or pirates, K. N. Lee is your girl. Every time I pick up one of her books, I find myself instantly transported to somewhere I’d much rather be because I know with her the main character is going to do something amazing. Or incredibly dangerous.

Even as a current author who is publishing books, I can’t help but feel elevated every time I read one of her stories because I know what the greatness that I’m chasing looks like. The cover from Fallen Empire takes my breath away, and the story inside reminds me why I wanted to be a writer growing up.

If you love books, I would highly recommend any series that she has written. If you want to write, I’d say saddle up and take notes because she is about to school you.

We all know that I have an unquenchable thirst when it comes to fantasy, but these books really hit the spot. The stories she tells are bold and daring, and the way she writes them draws you in before your even have a chance to step away.

As an author, all I can really hope is that I will write the stories in my heart and that they will find the right audience to appreciate them. My goal is always to share something with you, take you on an adventure or sweep you away into a world that you’ll love.

These ideals are very clearly seen in K. N. Lee’s works  and that’s why she’s such a great role model for me. I would say that she’s a great role model for any writer, or anyone who wants to know what it looks like when your passion so clearly bleeds into your work.

At the end of the day, I seek to do what she does, and I feel like I get a little closer with every book.

I cannot recommend her books enough, so go out there and fall into her worlds.

You won’t regret it.
