“An Angel who did not so much Fall as Saunter Vaguely Downward.” Does this quote perfectly describe Alfalfa, or the demon named Crowley in the cult classic, “Good Omens,” by @neilhimself and Terry Pratchett? The answer, of course, is both.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Because as Gaiman and Pratchett so eloquently display in their novel, life isn’t all black and white, inherently good or inherently bad. “People are just people,” as Crowley said. Or, in Al’s case, frenchies are just frenchies, he just sometimes has a bad streak (“Every dog is just two meals away from being a wolf.”). I knew as soon as I cracked this book’s spine open that I’d love it, mainly by transitive property, since Gaiman’s “Coraline” influenced so much of my own novel. My hopes were rewarded with “Good Omens” - there’s Lucy and Ethel, Bonnie and Clyde, and Neil and Terry. This literary power couple came together to produce this profound philosophical and theological treatise exploring good and evil, nature versus nurture, free will, organized religion, with a side of boy-hell hound friendship dynamics, all cleverly disguised as a mad adventure to foil Armageddon laced with the dry humor one comes to appreciate from British authors.

In a personal hierarchy of favorite books, this one is definitely in my top 10, and I encourage anyone (and their hell hound) to pick it up and join Crowley and Aziraphale in a mad caper, “leaping gratefully onto this new ice floe in the bewildering stream of consciousness.” And if you made it this far, thanks for indulging Al (aka Crowley) and I in our very first #bullybookclub book review!
