#Nevermoor, a story about a child cursed to die on her 11th birthday who instead goes on to create a whole new life for herself, was to me, above all, an ode to found families… and isn’t that essentially what your dog becomes in your life? Nice move, #BullyBookClub. I see you.

Al listened to the audiobook along with me, and the combination of @Digressica’s witty, magical, surreal and yet so real, literary debut along with Gemma Whalen’s amusing audio performance made me feel like we were about to open our umbrellas and “step boldly” into an adventure all our own every time we hit play.

Full disclaimer, Middle Grade is not my genre, yet I found myself comparing it to a cross between Harry Potter and Coraline, two of my all-time favorites, so on a personal level I’m grateful to Townsend for opening my mind again to these books and the wonder they bring. There was magic in every page, from Morrigan and Hawthorne (dragon rider, pictured in photo 3) chasing down shadows in the hotel Deucalion (pictured in photo 2) to a Christmas scene that will have you cheering on Saint Nicholas or the Yule Queen like you’re back at a college football game.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It warms my heart to know that so many little girls will read about this strong female protagonist, who is brave and imperfect and who takes chances and though she’s stumbling through learning about her strengths and weaknesses is still unapologetically herself, with her best friend by her side to show her the way.
