One of my favorite times of the year, all the snow day snuggles 🖤❄️ we shoveled, read, napped, mimosa’d… and now it’s time for the Puppy Bowl and Tom Brady!

Sunday lazy Sunday 🖤☁️ at least for this warthog. We caught up on some book reviews, they’re now in our Bibliophile highlight if you want some recs for your next read! We also did some light editing on my 12,000-word manuscript draft, it’s coming along slowly but surely. In non-book news, hubby is dragging us out of the house now to our other house (Lowes) to get some projects done. Al will still be right here I think!

Happy @bullybookclub book review day!
  ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
#BullyBookClub January read: #TheMidnightLibrary by @mattzhaig
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
  ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
When Nora Seeds, grappling with the throes of depression, tries to end her life, she finds herself in a purgatorial library lined with books all containing different versions of her life story.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
After trying out a rock star life, a life as an Olympian athlete, a wife and mother, a glaciologist, and scores of others all brought to fruition by one or two distinct choices that split her path in various ways, she embodies her discovered mantra: “the only way to learn is to live.”
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
… Al’s mantra is more like, “the only way to live is to snack.” You can see him, pictured here, trying out several lives from his “library,” all of which, in spite of his different life choices, feature him doing what he loves most: snacking.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
As someone in the mental health advocacy & communications world professionally, I thought the way Haig wrote about depression was brave, and painted a more accurate picture than many novels I’ve read. Yet he was able to take a plot line revolving around suicide ideation and turn in into an empathetic and inspiring story. That said, situational depression is very different from other types of depression (and is no less valid), but I think it’s worth acknowledging here that a shift in perspective isn’t typically a permanent solution for correcting chemical imbalances in the brain. I will say, though, that this is the first book in a long time that has brought me to tears, more than once, and I found myself rereading certain parts days after I’d finished the story to let it sink in further.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This book ticked all the boxes for us, and we highly recommend it! Our favorite line: “you don’t have to understand life, you just have to live it.”
  ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
… or, in Al’s terms: “you don’t have to be a good boy 24/7 to earn a snack, but you have to wear whatever mama makes you wear, and sit.”

So, I’ve been writing… @marykubica inspired me to write 500 words a day, and my main goal this year is to have a completed manuscript for Book 2. Writing a novel is an inherently isolating process, and I’m not typically someone who’s great at being creative during chaos, which threw my writing goals for a loop last year, but this is where I’m showing up first thing every morning. My writing has matured and deepened a lot since my first novel, and I’m hoping that voice comes through. But for anyone else who has writing goals, or likes following along with the process, cheers to the next 500! And the next… and the next… 📚🖊

Cheers to 2021, and spending NYE with this view 🍾🖤 this year brought us this house, and for that we’re grateful, but it wasn’t about “crushing goals” and driving after everything we wanted. As it turns out this year was all about learning to appreciate everything we already have. Cheers to you, to health, home and happiness! (at Loudoun County, Virginia)
