On Growing Up Girl
Since we are young, women are taught
To look just like the girls in the magazines
Or we won’t be desired.
Since we are young, women are taught
Boys will be boys
But we must mind our manners.
Since we are young, women are taught
You can be anything
But make sure to focus on marriage and a family first.
Since we are young, women are taught
That our bodies our are temples
But the men in power will make decisions about our bodies for us.
Since we are young, women are taught
What we are wearing is more important
Than the intelligent thoughts we resist from sharing.
Since we are young, women are taught
That other women are our main competition
So we tear each other apart for a chance at the crown.
It’s time about time for a change
So that when our daughters grow up
They will be care more about the world that surrounds us
Than the guilt over eating a second brownie.
