In The Lime Light #AuthorSpotlight – E.M. Bosso

SMAFU

.

Although it has, indeed, been some while, I have not forgotten about spotlighting my fellow authors/poets/bloggers through my In The Lime Light posts.  Life just took me away for a short time. Still, good things come to those who wait (Good things being the amazing author I am about to share with you and those who wait, of course, being YOU!)

I met E.M.Bosso via a Facebook writing group, and it did not take much time for me to realize that his writing is not only poignant and extremely relevant, with a conscience that appealed to me, but witty and entertaining as well.  So I invited him to participate in a LimeLight and he agreed (admittedly he had no idea what he was getting into, but let that go).   Curious to know more? Fantastic…then let’s get on.

Hello Michael.  Please tell us about You, Your Bio:   As a young man I always wanted to be a writer, I just didn’t know it. Telling stories, having dreams, building a fictional reality that allowed me to cope with “normal” people became an outlet for creativity that was bubbling inside. After all, how much fun is it to sit in a restaurant and assume the couple at the next table were just ordinary people having dinner? Much more entertaining to imagine them discussing world domination, or plotting their next great bank heist. (If that was you, sorry about the strange looks.)

As time went by, and my kids no longer believed I was a Pirate-Spy working for the Antarian secret service plotting their intergalactic takeover of the fast food industry, I decided to take my imagination out into the real world and let total strangers judge, rate, and post reviews on the quality of my mad writing skills. So far… so good.

(I would tend to agree!)

The real world of “Michael” (yes I actually refer to myself in the third person, doesn’t everyone?) is pleasant but nowhere near as exciting as my stories. I’ve been a shoe salesman, phone salesman, nuts and bolts stacker, television repair assistant, designer of computer systems, non-profit worker, lobbyist, banker, VP of a large banking institution, stock broker, financial advisor, husband, dad, son and brother. Pretty standard stuff compared to a dreamwalker, or mass murdering avenging angel.

(I think you forgot amazing writer, which isn’t as diabolical as an avenging, mass-murdering angel, but potentially just as interesting.)

Please Introduce us to your Blog.  What is it all about?   What sorts of posts do you lean towards?   My website is designed to not only showcase my current and previous novels, but to delve into some of the more controversial topics that my novels deal with.  A novel is a story and generally has a beginning and an end.  But real life issues continue on long after the novel is done.  Currently I am showcasing an online memorial wall for the victims of Rape and Physical Abuse.  Far too often we as society get up in arms about a current horrendous crime.  We yell and scream with outrage until something else catches our attention.  The women involved are abandoned and left as the world focuses on the next biggest thing.  I would like a place for their stories to live until the world is unable to forget.  Only then will the conversations that need to occur really happen.  After the outrage is gone and the truth remains.

(a truly compassionate and brilliant idea! and for those who are interested, here’s the link:  http://www.embosso.net/ )

What Inspires and stirs your creativity?  Mostly anger and outrage… lol.  I’m just kidding, my creativity is inspired by real life events and wild dreams.  I’ve been told several times I’m a naked writer, my emotions carry over to my words and I drag the reader into my world for a short time.  As such, my inspiration comes from within and bleeds out through my fingers as I type away mindlessly on my keyboard.

(I wouldn’t agree with mindlessly, but let’s not argue)[image error]

Conversely, what do you find difficult to write about?  The hardest thing for me to write about, or talk about, or even really think about is myself.  It is always easier to write and talk about others than to examine our own inner minds.  Although… with my particular mind I think that’s probably safer and better for all.  Lol

What Message, if any, do you hope to Share through your blog/writing?  My blog and my novels all have one overriding message.  There is hope and love in the world as well as misery and violence.  Communication, understanding, and following a dream can all result in a better world.  Whether it’s a failing relationship or recovering from a brutal attack, there is always hope and people willing to offer their kindness if you open yourself up and allow them in.

(I couldn’t agree more!)

Tell us about your book(s): Currently I have two published works with several in progress.  SMAFU (Situation Married All Fucked Up) is a story of a troubled marriage.  It’s a place that many people can identify with.  The couple has grown distant and apart, there isn’t much hatred and still a lot of love but time and apathy have ruined whatever chance at happiness they may have had.  A wise and elderly neighbor shares her wisdom and advice.  She may or may not be able to save the marriage, but she is surely going to get her two-cents in.  At times it’s funny; at time it’s painful and frustrating; sometimes sad… just like real life.

(I can’t wait to read it! it’s already on my TRBList)[image error] (Review coming soon…)

FBOM

FBOM, on the other hand, is not the sweet, kind lighthearted story that will leave your heart soaring with hope and new life.  FBOM is a story that revolves around the darkness of man and the insanity of suffering.  The society of Rape that we live in, have always lived in and accepted is a result of shame, lack of empathy and a total domination of the hearts and souls of an entire gender.

Imagine the outrage if a man were to be raped in Central Park, or a serial rapist broke into homes and raped the husbands instead of the wives.  Imagine the manhunts, the disgust, the court cases.  Yet these things happen every day in cities and towns around the world.  Entire populations are subjugated and their women used as sex slaves and we accept it as part of society and war.

Until conversations begin, empathy learned and entire generations are retrained to understand and think with their hearts and their minds, the thousands of years of brutal exploitation will continue.

(A truly difficult subject to broach, but Im looking forward to reading it as well)

What Inspired you to write your book?  Life has inspired me to write.  Throughout my life I have been working with people.  Learning about them, helping them in one way or another, and generally experiencing both their joys and pains.  It is time to share what I’ve learned over the years and doing it in a story format has always been the most effective manner of communication.  After all, there is a reason all of the old tales were told around campfires and sung by traveling minstrels.  If you can create the image in their minds, and reach their souls, the pictures your words create will last a lifetime.

How would you describe your “Voice” or Style of writing?  As I mentioned earlier, I’ve been called a naked writer.  How people know what I’m wearing when I write is beyond me, but there it is.   I do prefer to wear socks and Jesus Sandals though.   Actually… I write with a style that is designed to bring the reader into the heart and soul of the characters.  I want them to be part of the story not just a casual observer.  If you read one of my sex scenes and aren’t in desperate need of a …. Drink… or you finish one of my novels without feeling like you have eaten a full meal and need a nap, I kind of feel as if I’ve let you down.

(And this is why I just had to share you/your writing with everyone!)

In SMAFU, I want the reader to feel the frustration, heartache and feeling of abandonment of both the husband and the wife.  I want them to hope for unity and salvation, cry for failures and doubts and understand the why and how the ending was the way it is.  It’s life, sometimes things work out, and sometimes they don’t.  You’ll just have to read the book to find out what happens.

In FBOM I just want the reader to feel.  To feel every element of emotion on the scale.  From anger and disgust to joy and arousal.  I want the reader to feel the pain and fear, the gruesome feeling of power and conquest, and most of all the belief that things can improve and get better.  Society can change and improve but it has to start with an honest discussion that removes the shame self-recrimination.

What genre do you prefer to write or are you truly eclectic?   Eclectic is a marvelous word.  SMAFU is technically a Romantic Comedy, FBOM is a probably best categorized as a crime thriller.  I’m in the process of writing a metaphysical sci-fi thriller and have an epic romance novel in the works.  Soooo…. Hmmm…. Preference?  Nope.

(nor do I, but this is all about you, so..)

Do you painstakingly plot out your story; are you a discovery writer or a bit of both? Why?   I know the beginning and end of almost everything I write.  It’s the stuff in the middle that comes to me in the shower and in my dreams.  In my car as I sit in traffic and in the middle of the day when my mind wanders.  I’ve even been known to work on two books simultaneously as one plot point hits me back and forth.

Do you have a favourite or least favourite character? And Why?   That’s like asking me if I have a favorite child.  I refuse to answer that in case I offend one of them.  (Psst… It’s Cherisse, don’t tell the others.)

(Your secret is safe with us; isn’t it everyone?)

Share an insight or secret about your book(s).  You should really read them.  The secrets of the universe are enclosed within.

EMBosso

And now the hard part…lets talk about YOU (No you can’t bow out now, sit down): If you had to describe yourself to someone who has never met you, what might you say?   Beware, he borders on insanity but he’s truly harmless.

If you could meet one person from the past, who might it be and why?  I think I would like to meet Jesus Christ.  Not because I’m a super, devout Christian, but because I would really like to know if he thinks it was worth it.

When you are NOT writing, what is your favourite pastime?  I am an avid Baseball fan.

Do you have a Mantra?  Do no harm unless it leads to a greater good.  Sometimes pain is necessary for growth.  Stasis is the enemy.

Thank You Ever So much Michael for taking time away from your writing, the odd daydream(not odd in the odd sense, mind you, unless they are, of course!), and your plans for world domination to share your story and your stories with all of us. I, for one, am delighted you stopped by and hope everyone else is also.

#FridayFantasy – A Forceful Healer – #FreeTeaser

Braying Caverns

.

…..“The Reviled are tracking us; they are within the cavern and closing in.  We cannot delay!” At hearing his warning, the golden-haired Fey glanced over his shoulder with noticeable trepidation, leaning closer to gather Gairynzvl more securely in his arms.  With the Healer’s strong supportive embrace he finally found his feet, although he stood for a moment, collecting his senses.  Before he could stagger onward, Evondair bid him to wait while he rummaged through the pack he carried between his nebulous wings, seeking his allotment of Quiroth, which he had not yet utilized.

“Drink this.” Handing the small bottle forward to Gairynzvl, who stood staring blankly into the distance in a muddled haze, he placed the bottle in his hand, waited; then physically lifted it to his mouth.

“It will strengthen you.  Drink!”  Again the Healer spoke with a surprisingly forceful tone and Gairynzvl shook himself at last, grasped the bottle more firmly and tilted it hastily over his lips.  He remembered the foul tang of the amber liquid from the last time he had been required to drink it and his reaction to the strong, earthy flavor and pungent aroma was the same.  Turning his head abruptly, he could not force himself to not spit it out; groaning in disgust and shuddering with revulsion at its taste, but the Healer would not be eluded so easily.  Leaning close another time, he spoke with an unmistakably threatening tone.

“It is good that the darkness is blinding; if Mardan could see, he would be only too happy to restrain you while I force you to drink.”  Twisting to gaze backward at the Healer with astonishment, Gairynzvl scoffed, then shook his head when he neither moved away nor said anything further, demonstrating his intractable intentions through the silence of his piercing viridian stare alone.  Raising the bottle to his mouth begrudgingly, Gairynzvl frowned ferociously at it, tilted his head back and drank its contents in one draught, hissing with loathing at the empty container before he handed it abruptly back to Evondair.

“You will thank me for this.” ….

#FridayFantasy – Unspoken – #BookTeaser

Uunglarda2

. A brand new, previously unwritten excerpt based upon the events in Chapter Sixteen of Dark Fey:  Standing in Shadows, where the Liberators cross through a portal into the Uunglarda for the first time.

.

The slurking emptiness of the portal spiraled in confounding directions, blackness folding upon darkness, disorientating and robbing him of every sense. Silence filled his hearing, emptiness touched his hands, and piercing blackness robbed his sight as he forced himself to step through the numbing cold nothingness.  Three steps, Gairynzvl had told him; three steps and he would be through the portal, but in the darkness where he lost all perception, including that of his own body, he could not be sure how many steps he had taken and the slowly turning abyss offered no perspective.  Wholly uncertain, Evondair took another step.

The scrunch of gravel beneath his boots reoriented his senses as he took a final step and found himself standing on a dusty, barren track of greyish gravel surrounded by jagged outcroppings of bare rock.  A fetid stench hung upon the thin air and leaching downward from a colourless sky, sooty rain in the form of a heavy mist shrouded everything.   As the remaining Liberators crossed into the Uunglarda, Evondair moved away from the portal and gazed around curiously; yet even as he sought to familiarize himself with the empty wasteland stretching away before him in both directions and ignore the malodorous stench that made him snort in disgust more than once, he reached out through his exceptional gift of discernment.

The action was instinctual; a means of understanding his surroundings and those within it, but opening his mind to the darkness of the Uunglarda was not only an ill-conceived idea, but a thoroughly dangerous endeavor and he instantly regretted it.  With the force of a rushing tide, desperate loneliness and unremitting anguish poured into his being, overwhelming him so completely that he raised his hands to cover his eyes and doubled over with physical pain.  Memories as scathing as a lashing torment serrated through his thoughts; sadistic brutality and remorseless cruelty that drew a profound groan from behind his clenched teeth before the irrepressible tears of more souls than he could number pressed into him like a thousand blades.

He did not say a word, in truth he could not, but as the waves of despair and suffering sought to drag him into the colourless shadows and ensnare him, he fought to withdraw his discernment from the darkness even as it grasped and clawed at his mind like a ravaging monster.  He could have screamed; he could have cried bitter tears; he could have cursed repeatedly in fluent Dlalth as the comprehension of the dark language of the Reviled filled his mind as clearly as his own did, but he did none of these things. As the deluge of misery wrenched at his mind and heart and the dejectedness of the lost Fey of the Light tore at his sanity, he centered his thoughts on the only thing in all of existence that was capable of defeating the darkness.  Filling his mind’s eye with an image of bright, clear, sparkling Light, he focused his attention on the wails and screams shattering his thoughts and answered their cries for mercy with the strongest weapon at his disposal.

Unspoken, yet heard as clearly as thunder rolling across the scorched heavens, the compassionate love that filled his entire spirit reached outward benevolently, silencing the calamitous uproar as a breathless pause stretched across the gloom.

#FridayFantasy #CharacterSpotlight – The Healer

evondar

.

A Fellow author recently interviewed Me about one of my lesser known characters from Dark Fey, so I chose to share the Character spotlight in its entirety today. I hope you will enjoy learning about The Healer, who becomes one of the main characters throughout the pages of book two, Standing In Shadows.

Tell me a bit about your character. Who are they, how old are they? What do they look like? His name is Evondair and he comes into the story in Dark Fey: Standing In Shadows.  He is a youthful Healer just beginning his dedicated years of practice round about the age of 25, though I never do specify.  He is an average height for a malefey, standing 5’10”, and has a trim, powerful physique.  The golden-blond waves of his shoulder length hair accentuate the deep viridian of his eyes and his expansive white wings.  He is beautifully handsome, but far from arrogant about it.

Do they have any strange or unique physical traits? Most Fey are either telepathic, empathic or have a gift of discernment and Evondair’s gift of discernment is exceptional. He is able to understand another as completely as they know themselves and can usually tell truth from lies with relative ease. Although he has no gift of magic, as some Fey do, he is also a skilled Healer of innate ability.

Does the character have any quirks? In spite of his harmonious nature, he has an impishly mischievous side, as well as an unpredictably short temper, particularly for a Healer.

Where do they live? What’s it like there? Evondair resides within the Temple Complex of Hwyndarin in simple quarters, but the Temple is the center of all learning and contemplation for the village, filled with lush gardens, tranquil devotionaries, vast libraries, and the Healing Wards where he studied and practices. Peopled by artisans, scholars, Celebrants, and the Triune Elders, it is by far the most luxurious and beneficial place to live on the entire continent.

What is their role in the story? Are they the protagonist/antagonist, a supporting character? Evondair stepped into the story of Standing In Shadows quietly, as his nature would dictate, but he has become a central, supporting character with a clear purpose. His harmonious inclination leads him to make a choice that will ultimately guide many others; changing the entire relationship between the Fey of the Light and the Dark Fey forever.  (no spoilers here![image error]  )

What do they do for a living? Evondair is a Healer, which is very much the same as a doctor, although the Fey of the Light practice holistic medicine, herbalism, and magic, for those who have such gifts. Although he is a practicing Healer, Evondair is also a voracious reader and is seldom found not studying to increase his knowledge of the healing arts.

What do they do for fun? Like many malefey, Evondair enjoys playing Vladokhyssum, a sport similar to Rugby and Kill the Carrier, though the entire match takes place on the wing. It is a comparatively violent sport in which one team member tries to score, being defended by only his three teammates, while twelve others attempt to stop him by (nearly) any means possible.

What is their greatest weakness, their greatest strength? Compassion for others and the confidence to do what he knows is right lies at the heart of Evondair’s nature, but his swift temper often leads him astray.

What is the best that ever happened to them? The worst? The best thing to ever happen to Evondair comes in book three, Breaking Into The Light, when he meets Kaylyya, his true mate. I cannot tell you the worst thing, as it would be too great a spoiler for book three.

What do they want from life? What are their goals? As a Healer, Evondair longs for harmony and a calm, quiet life, not only for himself, but for all. Although he is young, it does not take him long to understand that the only way to achieve the Peace he longs for is by becoming Peace.

And to wrap things up, does this character of a “theme” song (or several)? Definitely Twilight by Delerium (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gpBU74RRY3A&feature=youtu.be )

Sing Softly in the Silence,

Then Listen for the Reply.

On its Own,

Waiting for The Melody.

#CharacterInteractions – Maca of Don – Part Two

EARTHBOUND

.

Part One

Anna stamped her foot. “I was being a good Frau. Now do you see why I won’t marry you? I will not go through years of no love, no conversation, except suddenly the thought occurs and then there is another baby, and silence grows in the house because you are certain that the baby can’t be yours. Then when you realize that the baby is yours, you will view it as a monster; something to be destroyed. You fear that if people know you have two hearts they will not understand and try to kill you.”

“My darling heart, if the Justines are wrong about the abilities of a mutant being able to fither a child and there tis a baby, I twill be the happiest man in Texas. Yere reasoning that I twould stay away from the marriage bed tis wrong. Thalians are known for their, uh, frequency in pursuit of happiness.” He was almost stuttering. How to put the Thalians’ enjoyment of sex into words that would not offend Anna eluded him.

“I twill seek ye in the bed every evening if that tis yere desire.” He blurted the words in his own manner.

“What?” Anna’s eyes widened. “Mr. MacDonald, how can I believe you?”

“Anna, Mrs. Lawrence, I have nay lied to ye. Ye twill be part of my House and all that I have tis yeres. If ye dinna marry me, I twill sign over my land and home to ye and ye twill live in my heart forever. All that I ask is that I be allowed passageway to the foothills.”

“I do not want your land or your money…” Her voice stopped. “Why the foothills?”

“That tis where I have hidden the vessel that brought me here.”

“There ye have the tale of how she discovered my two hearts. Ye see how fearless she was even though I stood eleven inches taller than her. She feared nay man, nay even her own laddie.”

“Laddie, do you mean son? Why would she fear her son? Was he mad?”

“Nay, he was just angry with the world and was sure I had hurt his mither. He was fifteen and I had just brought him to home. He had been picked up by the Comancheros, a degenerate band of men from different races, when the Comanche had raided their cabin. That tis another tale.

“His name tis Lorenz and he had grabbed his mither’s shotgun from over the front doorway. In his mind, men hurt women when bedding them. He kenned nay different. Anna ran in front of him and grabbed the weapon, shouting ‘Nein, nein, such things du cannot do. Tis a wonder the gun did nay go off.”

“What did you do then.”

“I did nay need to do anything. My Anna made him apologize. He hated every word of it. If ye like we can add him to our conversation.”

#

“This tis my laddie, Lorenz, Laird of Don. Of course, on Earth he was Lorenz Adolf MacDonald when I adopted him.”

“Welcome, Lorenz. Would you like some coffee? If so, cream or sugar. I’ve discovered your father doesn’t care for our coffee or tea.”

“Thank y’all, ma’am. Black is fine. I’ve never made a pudding out of it.”

“I seem to detect a Southern accent. You were born in the South?”

“You mean Papa didn’t explain we’re Texan? Texan cattlemen.” A wide smile spread across his face, then vanished. “That’s gone now.” The voice was as flat as the gray eyes.

“Perhaps one of you could explain. If you are adopted, how is it that you have lived well over one hundred years?”

“That tis easy to explain. This tis my Anna’s second son with Toma, a Justine. He too has their two hearts and mind abilities.”

“That must have startled the Thalians when you returned to your planet.”

“Aye, but they relented and let me Claim him when he helped destroy the Sisterhood. They were the last remnants of the Justine rule.”

“Claim? Is that like an adoption?”

“Oh, hell, ah, excuse me,” answered Lorenz. “They are Thalians. We wore nothing but a cape in front of the Council of the Realm, their ruling body. If he’d been something other than royalty we would have been before that continent’s Maca or Guardian.”

“Nothing?”

“Aye, it symbolizes the birth process. The mither wears nay when giving birth and the wee one wears nay. Tis a most moving ceremony.”

“Papa, y’all better stop there. Ms. Morgan looks like a lady to me.”

“Mayhap ye are right. Our customs are much different, but we are nay royalty. I am Maca, nay King.”

“He always says that, but if he decrees something it is law.  He’s the one who decides who lives where or does what work. He can take over the trial of any wrong doer and condemn them to being an Ab or to prison as long as it is on his continent.  A different Maca rules each continent and their word is law.”

“That tis nay quite true. As Macas, we must follow the governance of Thalia. I could nay tell them to march off a cliff. I dinna tell them where they can work or at what employment.”

“Uh, but since Thalia raises kine, cattle that is, many work at the stations, butchering plants, dairies, and distribution, plus the leather works. The manufacture of space vehicles is also located on Don which means you control a huge enterprise, plus the Warrior Academies are located there. You get to control who the instructors are. If that isn’t king like powers, just what is?

“Mayhap, but it tis nay like your land where the child of the king or queen becomes the next ruler.”

“Thalians live too long for that to happen, but you make sure that someone from that dynasty will rule by saying it is a descendant from your first born son or daughter.  They just have to birth the new Maca after the old one is dead.”

“The good Gar kens how to control that. The one born will have the Maca hands.”

“Could one of you explain what the term Maca hands mean? Your hands are large, Maca of Don. Is that what you mean?”

“Oh, nay, the Maca’s hands will convey the message of authority when they touch a member of that House. Sometimes the Maca is so powerful that his hands will convey the message to all Thalians that this tis a Maca.”

“Would an Earth person recognize that?”

“No way,” Lorenz replied.

Llewellyn sighed. “Lorenz tis right. I fear that they do nay. They think that my hands convey a certain amount of heat, but nay would acknowledge me as Maca.  That tis, as long as they are nay from my House on Earth. Some of them do recognize me. Those in my House of Don on Thalia do recognize that I am still Maca.”

“Exactly, Papa, but we need to move on. I have left there and you must do so too.”

“Don and Thalia still need me.”

“They do not, and Thalia needs a new Maca. You have already outlived a normal Thalian. Y’all are Justine too. The other members of House want their chance. They have begun to resent you.”

“Bah, they will nay challenge me.”

“What if one does, then what? It will be a challenge to the death, Papa.  If someone like Lewis challenges you, do you use your mind to stop him if he physically overpowers you? Y’all know damn well, excuse me, ma’am, I would.”

The huge form sat and looked towards the window. “If I did that I would have to leave. I have promised nay to use the Justine mind. It would negate my being Maca.”

“Then you are dead.” The voice was as flat as his cold, gray eyes. “Lewis is bigger and stronger than you are now and he is growing impatient.”

“There tis nay rule of law that says I can abdicate.”

“We just leave, Papa. The Council will appoint a new Maca or Guardian. Then Lewis will challenge that one. They’ll let him have the honor rather than fight. Lewis is Don. He is a descendant of Lavina.”

“Aye, the rumor was that the eld Maca had fathered her. She looked just like my Mither and Elder Lamar.” He sighed and rose. “How can I leave my beloved Thalia?”

“We just leave. Like now, Papa.”
