#FridayFantasy – Crimson – #Book #Teaser

crimson

.

Turning the shadowy corner, she thought to press on, in spite of the many Legionnaires filling the encampment; crowding round its many sulfur braziers with faces half-covered to protect themselves from the malodorous fumes while hoping to extract some measure of warmth from the ineffectual fires.  Disguised beneath the veil of bent light she had cast round herself  in order to traverse the dangerous avenues of the Uunglarda unseen, Ilys stepped onward lightly without a sound or any indication of her presence; yet as she came to the end of the street, where a black tent marked the Centurion’s quarters,  a Legionnaire in crimson leather strode purposefully into the middle of the street, stopped directly in her path, and glared at her.

She froze; catching her breath and refusing to breathe so not to give herself away as her mind spun, seeking some means of escape.  She remained invisible behind the ripple of light she bent round herself, but his crimson stare pierced into her from beneath a broad, brown leather bandana, which kept his shoulder-length, jet black hair from falling into his eyes.  In the mustiness and reek of the Bathracht encampment, he had turned the collar of his coat up and had cinched it tightly to avert some measure of the noxious fumes poisoning the air. He stood unmoving with his arms crossed assertively across his broad chest while, in an incongruously non-threatening gesture, his held his wings tightly folded behind him.

Hesitating long enough to make it clear that he was aware of her, regardless of her invisible guise; he stared at her fixedly and his crimson gaze sent a shiver through her.  Memory served her well, but in a realm where nearly all the inhabitants had blood-hued eyes, she could not distinguish him from the many other Legionnaires that had, at one time or another since her Integration, used her for sport or had been forced to do so.  Fear blended with anger that mixed with hatred within her, boiling into a rage that was nearly uncontrollable; still, she was not foolish enough to think she would be capable of injuring a Demonfey who towered nearly fourteen inches over her and whose physique boasted unmistakably of his strength.

“Yes, I can see you.”  His voice was little more than a hoarse whisper, but it sent a shudder through her that made her teeth chatter…..

#AuthorInterview – Interview with #YA #ParanormalFantasy Author Cynthia A. Morgan

thumbnail_Standing in Shadows Complete

Author and Editor Lisa Haselton recently opened a conversation with me about Dark Fey, what Inspired the story; what it’s underlying Message is, and how it has effected me/ changed my life.

My guest author today is Cynthia A. Morgan. She’s chatting with me about her newest release, Dark Fey: Standing in Shadows, which is the second installment of theDark Fey Trilogy, her WIP. The Trilogy’s finale, Dark Fey: Breaking into the Light is due out in the early part of next year.

What is the story about? Standing in Shadows delves deeper into the mystery and suspense of the tale initiated in book one: The Reviled. In book two, readers discover the history behind the main character, Gairynzvl, in greater detail as they learn about the harrowing life he endured among the Reviled Fey of the Uunglarda, as well as the terrors of The Integration; the process of intentional cruelty and neglect designed to twist childfey into Dark Ones.  Although Standing in Shadows reaches deeper into the shadows, it never strays entirely out of the Light, relating a tale of both fear and hope as readers share Gairynzvl’s challenges to return into a restored life.

Who is the main character? As in Book One, Gairynzvl is still the central character.  He is a Fey of the Light who was abducted by The Reviled at a young age and was forced to endure life among them for nearly 15 years, but he never lost hope of returning into the Light and his courage and conviction are what drives the story, as well as his purpose. Standing in Shadows, however, is more of an ensemble than book one, bringing several characters into the main plot. Without each of them, Gairynzvl cannot fulfill his purpose and readers come to know each of them throughout the tale as they become involved in Gairynzvl’s plan.

What inspired this tale? Although certainly darker than book one, Standing in Shadows does not incorporate this level of horror simply for the sake of it. One does not need to open the pages of a book to discover the unthinkable, as the darkness typically embodied in fantasy genre stories by some terrifying being or creature is very much alive in our own reality and this is the underlying motivation for the darkness woven into Dark Fey.  Standing in Shadows was based in great part on the terrifying, yet true-life events of the Lord’s Resistance Army or LRA, a rebel militant group in Uganda that has for over 20 years abducted children from their homes; forcing them to commit horrifying acts of violence against each other and their own people. These children suffer a very real Integration and, like the childfey of Jyndari, they endure violence, starvation, multiple rapes and beatings at the hands of truly sadistic overlords.  This is how the Reviled came to life and became the horrifyingly cruel beings depicted in Dark Fey.

How did the story come to you? The initial Inspiration for Dark Fey came to me in a vivid dream, which stayed with me for many days, growing clearer and more complex as I considered it.  Then I learned about the LRA (through watching the mini-series Long Way Down with Ewan MacGregor and Charlie Boorman). The realization that horrible things happen every day in our own realm became even more clear and the underlying message of the story solidified. “Something Must Be Done”.

Did you have to research for this novel and if so, why? Jyndari is a realm of my own making and the Fey who abide there are unlike fairies in a typical fantasy genre, so I did not need to research them.  They are their own creation; however, I did research the LRA to understand more fully what happens to the children they abduct.  Much of what happens to them is represented through intimation in the story of the childfey of Jyndari, not to add any measure of sadistic horror to the tale, but to bring to light the horrifying truths of our own world.

If you did research, what do you think surprised you most to learn and why? Learning that such atrocities happen in our own world was heartbreaking to me.  We like to think that such darkness only exists in books, but fact actually IS much stranger than any fiction.

Do you relate to your character? I do very much so.  Gairynzvl’s strength of purpose and compassion in spite of the pain he has endured comes from somewhere within me. As does Ayla’s deep empathy for others; Evondair’s Harmonious spirit; and Rehstaed’s fun-loving nature.  At least for me, when I write, my characters tend to embody some part of who I am, so I do relate to them and understand them intimately.

Is your protagonist anything like you personally?  If yes, then how? (sorry, already answered this I think)

What made you write this character; what made them important to you or made you want to tell their story? Gairynzvl was the only prominent character in the dream I had, which inspired the Dark Fey Story.  As the complexity of his history, and subsequently his nature itself, became clear to me, I found him too compelling to ignore. You might say, just as he appeared to Ayla, he appeared to me, demanding my full and undivided attention.

Is there anything specific you want readers to know about this piece of work?  The story itself is fantasy, but the underlying significance lies in how we deal with tragedy and hardship; how the choices we make affect others, and how the decision to live a purposeful life can have a positive contribution.  Heavy stuff for a fantasy, I know.  It is also my greatest hope to be able to ultimately provide some percentage of its royalties to the work UNICEF does, specifically in Uganda.

When will the novel be available for purchase?Dark Fey: The Reviled and Standing in Shadows are currently both available.   The third installment, Breaking into the Light will release in the spring of 2017.

Has the book already been published? Yes

If yes, do you have a link available for buying it?

Okay, let’s learn more about you, as a writer   Who is Morgan?  I am a word devotee, through and through.  Happiest when surrounded by the beautiful constructs of Shakespeare, Austin, Dickens, Poe and the like, I fill my world with words, lyrical musings, music, and laughter.  Much of who I am and what I am about can be seen/discovered on my blog:  booknvolume.com.

What inspired you to start writing?  I have always been a writer.  Even as a child I wrote poems, in crayon! I have an abiding love of words, beautiful phrases, creating images through lyrical descriptions and weaving stories.

What is your favorite book you have written and why?Dark Fey, of course. Not only because I am proud of the story of hope it shares, but because I find the Realm of Jyndari and its Feyfolk so beautiful and intriguing.  I am already conjuring ideas for prequels and sequels and spinoffs to remain within its environs.

When you are not writing, what do you do to recharge? I love to listen to music, which never fails to revitalize the creative side of my thoughts.  I also enjoy nature, whether walking or simply sitting quietly (usually under the moon and stars!) to breathe deep and slow, take stock, and listen.

Are you an Indie Author or are you part of a publishing house? I am very lucky. I began as an Indie Author, but now am an Indie Author who is supported and represented by Creativia Publications where I enjoy the best of both worlds J

Do you read books within the genres you write? Yes, Plus some. I enjoy epic fantasy and am a Tolkien fan through and through, but I also like to read Historical Fiction, like Philippa Gregory and Classic Literature such as Austin, Dickens and Poe.  And Shakespeare is an absolute must J

Besides being an author, do you have a second job?. Yes I do work a 9-5er as an administrative secretary in a physical therapy office, which pays the bills, until my writing will

Passage – Laughter – #FlashFiction

passage

.

Looking round, he realized the stars had drawn closer, much closer.   No longer shimmering in the distance, they hovered round him, pressing inward as the cacophony of laughter intensified.  His ears rang with the tumult; his senses spun, but worse than the dizzying discordance was the scourge of anger that flared within him.

He didn’t like being laughed at, particularly by unseen phantoms lingering in the ethereal void into which he had plunged.  Growling with ire, he pushed himself up from the parched ground and glared upward at the stars, which glared back, diverted by his blunder.

Breaths became blades…

#CharacterInterviews – Click for Bliss

cover-click-for-more-copy

Today’s 2 Character Interviews come to us via the creative genius of up and coming Author Lexi Miles.  Lexi’s first character of these two interviews is Ariel Bowie, the leading lady in her romance novel entitled Click For More.

Ariel Bowie, is in her late twenties and is a successful career focused clothing boutique owner.  Ariel has been receiving a lot of pressure from the hens, ladies in her family, to wed—and to do it fast—because wedding is expected for the ladies in the Bowie family.  With Ariel’s baby sister’s nuptials approaching, during a late night of rom-com movie watching, Ariel decides it is time to take action and list herself with the wed quick website Click for More.  She comes across the oh-so-gorgeous dark haired businessman Cort Abbot, who too has his own reasons to wed, and soon she finds herself married to this sexy stranger and loving every minute of it.  But some people aren’t as happy as she is about her new marriage.  Will they cause problems in paradise, or will the couple find that some things are meant to last?

So here we are by the ‘plashing waters of the Mediterranean sea, sipping fine wine and enjoying the balmy late summer breeze, chatting away…

Hello, what is your name? Ariel

Does your name have any special significance? No, no specific significance.  But, my mother did name my sisters and I names that all begin with the letter “A” for some reason.  Why, oh I don’t know because I’ve stopped trying to figure out the rhyme to my mother’s reason.  You see with her, I found young, it is best to just go with it.  (Giggles)

Where were you born and where do you now reside? I was born in a small town in northern California called Livermore and I still live there.  On rare occasions I really love to sneak out to my grandparents’ ranch, which stretches out in all directions and smells of fresh fruit, nestled within beautiful green hills and is two hours away from any civilization.

What internal battles do you struggle with or what would you like to change about yourself? Internally, with my career finally in balance, even though I try not to ever confess this, with so many people pressing me to get married, I’d like to find someone to wed and share every part of myself with.  And that includes all of the goofy, quirky and out of sorts parts.  And despite the constant pressure, I still want to do it for love and not just because it is time.  With all of the pressure around me I struggle to keep the will to do that.  But that is a hard limit, I want love.  And I want to find it for myself.

What I want to change, is to stop thinking that even though I had a bad past relationship, love isn’t still out there for me.  Within I just know that it is.  I even have taken measures to list myself with a wed fast website to find it, I figured why not?  And so far, now having my eye on a handsome someone’s profile, I am not disappointed.  So who knows?  (Giggles)

Do you have a personal creed you live by? My favorite aunt, Becky, told me this piece of advice and I live by it.  She told me to make choices for myself and for no one else.  That I do not have to care what others think of me just so long as I am happy with the choices that I make.  And I love that and live by it!

What are you most passionate about and what do you despise most? I am passionate about doing things on my terms.  If something is not right for me, I am not doing it—period.  I am also passionate about being a good partner and friend to my future husband.  A man that I hope to be head-over-heels in love with passionately for the rest of my life!

And what do I despise, honestly people who hurt you and then come back into your life and act as if they have a place and say in it.  Hypothetically speaking of course, I was not just talking about my ex, who broke off our wedding a couple days before the ceremony, who just breezed back in town or anything.  (Blushes and giggles.)

When and where is your tale set? Right here in the here and now in a small town (at least the older part) of Livermore in California, USA.  A place where, in spots, everybody knows everyone.  We are very tech savvy and have lovely wineries here on the outskirts of our town.  We have a lot of through traffic and visitors headed to the beach toward Santa Cruz, headed south toward Los Angeles, or headed in the other direction completely during the winter ski season toward Nevada’s snow resorts.

Who shares in your adventure and how are they important to you? Aunt Becky and surprisingly my baby sister Abbie are my support.  Also along for the ride is my mother, the hens, and my “perfect” cousin Rita.  They all nag me relentlessly about tying the knot.  And as of recently (fingers crossed) the new handsome guy who is the owner of that online profile from that wed quickly site Click for More that I was telling you about, Cort Abbot.  I mean, man is he hot!  I see Cort, just from his profile and all that we seem to have in common, being a big part of my future.  (Giggles)

What is it you seek to achieve, change or create? I hope to find my match, I want to change my last name (Giggles), and maybe create a happy life with Cort.  That is if I get a chance to know him before my family catches the scent of our new relationship.

Thank you so much for having me over to do this.  Such a nice location for a chat.

Now it’s time to meet the second character of the two interviews.  Lexi’s next character to stop by for an interview is Sunni Vandermoore, the leading lady in her romance novel, Custom Fit.

The beautiful Sunni Vandermoore petite and as spunky as they come, is one of the most sought after style consultants.  She is completely put off when her boss Zelina calls her into her office, as if Sunni is a newbie cub, and gives her a last minute emergency assignment.  Sunni’s protest comes to a halt when she realizes that she just got the assignment of a lifetime: dressing the ultra-sexy singer/actor Striker Clint for the entire holiday season.  The only rule, to avoid termination, no romantic involvement with the client.  But Striker is not just any client, Sunni has had it bad for him since she laid eyes on him in one of his earlier films.  Are some rules made to be broken?

Okay, how about we get started.

Hello, what is your name? Sunni

Does your name have any special significance? Yes, funny you should ask.  I was about to suffer the family name of the long lines of Judiths, but when I was born in the springtime, I got the original name of Sunshine instead.  Feel free to call me Sunni, because that is what my friends do.  (Giggles)

Where were you born and where do you now reside? I was born in California and still live here in Los Angeles.

What internal battles do you struggle with or what would you like to change about yourself? Opening up to someone romantically.  I had a bad experience that I’d rather not have again.

Do you have a personal creed you live by? I don’t know if I can condense it to one statement, because I live by a few.  But the gist is that I always try to look for the upside in things I guess.

What are you most passionate about and what do you despise most? I am passionate about doing my job, but having a balance.  I like looking out for my friends and also like—love—watching Striker Clint movies.  But who doesn’t right?

And, what do I despise.  Oh boy did you just open a can of worms: Rude People.  One specifically comes to mind.  There is this rude girl, Brenda, on my new holiday assignment that is Striker’s publicist-handler or something.  I say or something because she’s never really introduced herself officially as of yet.  Or maybe I wasn’t listening after the first, second, and third words out of Brenda’s mouth were all insults to me.  (Giggles)  And I am not too fond of another girl, Francie, I work with who is always trying to compete with me.  And I have to add one more person.  A weasel guy I came across in the past that is an actor, I’d rather not mention by name, who I just can’t stand—at all.

When and where is your tale set?  Present day Los Angeles California.

Who shares in your adventure and how are they important to you?  My long time group of friends, who pop in here and there, that all keep me focused, positive, and call me on things.  My boss/mentor Zelina who I’ve worked with for years drives me professionally.  Striker’s house manager Groans, who is totally unaware of his nickname, is always there when I need to ask a question.  The jury is still out on if he likes me or not.  Either way, his oddness and groaning makes me laugh.  My new make-up artist friend Kitty who has been showing me the ropes.  And of course, the oh-so-gorgeous Striker that I am very much into and would not mind being his romantic interest off-screen.  (Giggles)

What is it you seek to achieve, change or create? Not getting fired.  I have a feeling that it is going to be a difficult feat to keep things strictly professional with Striker.  Change my relationship with Striker to anything but professional, but that is only if it wouldn’t cost me everything.  As far as create, new rules so that I can date Striker.  Haha!  Okay seriously now, I secretly have developed designs for a clothing line and I would love for my boss Zelina to back it.  I wouldn’t quit what I do, because I love it too much, I would just wear more hats.  (With us talking about fashion, I must say that I am only talking figuratively here as in I won’t be wearing hats. Giggles)

Thank you so much for this opportunity to talk with you.  I had a wonderful time.

#FridayFictioneers – Untended Mending – #100WordStories

Untended Mending

Every Wednesday we get a new picture prompt for the Friday Fictioneers, a writing challenge to spin a tale of exactly 100 words, graciously hosted by Rochelle Wisoff-Fields. This is my contribution:

.

They tried to ignore what they never spoke about; whispers of a shadowy past left lying on the table like linen long faded and disused.

Forgotten were the blissful hours of romance and communication they once shared.  The glittering fragments of genial laughter and blush of unspoken nuances lay abandoned.  Stale silence filled the many rooms of their love and echoed along the unused hallways, choked by the gloom of bitter memory.

The machine of forgiveness waited, ready to sew the scattered, patchwork pieces of their life together again; yet it stood in the corner, neglected and rusting.

Untended mending.

Passage – Beguiling – #FlashFiction

Passage time stands still

.

Focused on the lissome silhouette in the distance, outlined against an ocean of night, his quickened pace mirrored his rushing pulse.  She continued to whisper, her voice beguilingly close, as if she stood beside right him, speaking ever so softly in his ear and his thoughts spun.

Unable to concentrate upon the rocky terrain as her curves and slender limbs came more fully into view, he stumbled more than once, cursed at his clumsiness; then went sprawling into the dust.

An onslaught of vicious laughter ensued; echoing round him from nowhere and everywhere, and when it began, her whispers ceased.

#RomanticTuesday – Come To Me – #LovePoetry

Come to me

.

As the soft shadows fall

And the willows Breathe amid the Song of the nightingale,

Come to me, my Love,

Lay down with me

Among the auburn Trance of Tenderest firelight;

Slowly close Your eyes,

That ever Entrance me with the Intensity of their Beauty,

Allow my words spill over You,

Soft Whispers of my Love

To Entice and Tease

To Caress and Please;

Allow the emotion Waiting deep within my breast

To Lavish You

Touching and Beguiling

As I watch Your lips, Smiling,

Hinting at the Fervor

Building Within

As the river of night expands

And the singers of velveteen hours

Serenade these moonlit waves of Indigo Bliss;

Come to me, my Love,

Rest within the Embrace of my Softest Sighs

As a Lingering Delirium

Of honeyed words and claret phrases

Intoxicate Your Passion,

And Share all the Secrets

Of my Love for You.

#RomanticTuesday – Cadence – A #PoetryCollaboration

Cadence

.

.  This Beautiful poem of longing love and sultry desire was written in collaboration with Holly from the poetry blog HeartaFire.  After spotlighting her through a Poets Interview (which you can read here ) I was delighted when she agreed to Write With Me  and this was the effortless result.  (Holly’s verses are designated with italics) Writing with Holly was a creative delight I would gladly repeat anytime. Thank You Holly!   Please be Sure to visit Heart at her beautiful poetry blog which you can find here:  https://aheartafire.wordpress.com/

.

Yesterday your voice called to me,

a hummingbird perched at my ear,

my arms  twining vine

enveloping your limbs.

The cadence of your breathing

brought me here,

wrapped itself around me,

your touch is a longing,

an ache in my bones.

.

Tomorrow my Heart still Yearns for you

Trembles Expressed through Sighs

As  Memory Dances upon transient Dreams

Of Your Piercing Gaze

And Sweet Blissful Days

Enwrapped in the Cadence of your Breath

A Symphony of Honey-dulcet Song

Where time unfolded

Where nothing was wrong.

.

Meet me in a secret garden,

I wait among gossamer frilled wings.

You will find me in the moonlight

or the tendrils of wisteria,

in stones rubbed worn  on  the

path  beneath your feet,

I wait in endless hours where

time is a catch in my throat.

.

Under the Light of a myriad stars

I wait for you, my Love,

My Breath a Cadence of your Sighs,

Longing for your Yearning,

And the Passion it Implies;

Here, then, Love

Beyond Morning, Beneath Night,

Breathe with me in Loves Rhyme

In a Cadence of Delight!
