Chisox’s Rodón no-hits Indians

The Chicago White Sox’s Carlos Rodón no-hit the Cleveland Indians for an 8-0 win at Guaranteed Rate Field on Wednesday, tossing the 307th no-no in major-league history.

Rodón was perfect through 8 1/3 but hit Roberto Perez with a pitch in the toe. But he completed the no-hitter, striking out seven and walking none.

The last White Sox no-hitter was thrown 7 months, 20 days ago by Lucas Giolito, a 4-0 win over the Pirates on August 25 at Guaranteed Rate Field. The Indians were last no-hit 9 years, 8 months, 18 days ago when the Los Angeles Angels’ Ervin Santana tossed a 3-1 no-no at Jacobs Field on July 27, 2011.

Rodón, born in Miami, becomes the fifth native Floridian to toss a no-no, joining Ken Johnson, Doc Gooden, Chris Heston and Mike Fiers (2). And he’s the third pitcher to toss a no-no wearing No. 55, joining Tim Lincecum (a pair) and Sean Manaea.

And then there were none: Padres finally notch no-hitter

For the first time in San Diego Padres franchise history dating back to the club’s inception in 1969, the Padres have thrown a no-hitter.

Joe Musgrove maintained a zero in the H column for nine innings Tuesday for a 3-0 win at Globe Life Field. The Padres had gone 8,205 regular-season games with no no-no, exceeding the Mets’ record for no-hit futility (8,019 games) by 186 games.

Musgrove struck out 10 and walked none, missing out on a perfect game by hitting Joey Gallo with a pitch.

Twins, Brewers hold each other hitless through 6

The Minnesota Twins and Milwaukee Brewers held zeros in the H columns through six innings at American Family Field on Saturday but neither team could complete the task.

Brewers starter Corbin Burnes threw 6 1/3 innings of no-hit ball before Byron Buxton blasted a ball over the right-center field fence in the seventh inning.

Twins starter José Berrios threw 6 innings of no-hit ball but was pulled for the seventh for Taylor Rogers. Rogers did his job for an inning, but reliever Tyler Duffey gave up a one-out single to right to Omar Narvaez after getting the first out and issuing a walk.

There’s been only one double no-hitter through nine. On Wednesday, May 2, 1917 at Weeghman Park, Vaughn and Toney each held their opponents hitless through nine innings of baseball. The game went to the 10th, and the Reds scored on a single, an error and a error on a swinging bunt. Toney got the no-no and the 1-0 victory, but Vaughn had to settle for a stellar performance that’s not recognized as an official no-hitter.

1st Padres no-no tossed in spring game, 83 years ago today

The first San Diego Padres no-hitter was thrown 83 years ago today in a spring exhibition game against the Imperial Valley All Stars.

The Padres’ Wally Hebert, who got the start at Lane Field on Saturday March 27, 1937, faced just 28 batters and struck out eight of them as he no-hit the visiting All Stars for an 8-0 win. The semipro All Stars drew top players from San Diego, the San Fernando Valley and Mexico.

Hebert, who had some major-league experience as a St. Louis Browns reliever, allowed two base runners, one on a walk and another on an error by third baseman Ernie Holman. George Myatt (3-for-5) and Hebert (2-for-4) led San Diego’s offense.

The Padres in ’37 were a Boston Red Sox affiliate featuring an 18-year-old outfielder named Ted Williams. It’s not known if Williams was in the lineup for Hebert’s no-no, but he did sit out the second game of the series (March 28 — Padres 7, All Stars 2) with a charley horse.

The San Diego Padres finished the 1937 regular season third in the Pacific Coast League standings with a 97-81 record, but topped both the Sacramento Solos and the Portland Beavers in four-game sweeps to capture the PCL championship title.

Mets’ Kroll, Richardson no-hit Pirates, 56 years ago today

The New York Mets’ Gary Kroll and Gordie Richardson no-hit the Pittsburgh Pirates, 56 years ago today.

Kroll pitched the first six innings on March 22, 1965, walking three batters in the first inning. Richardson threw the last three frames, with Del Crandall reaching first in the eighth inning on an error by shortstop Roy MacMillian. The Mets won 6-0.

Murray Chass’ report for the AP noted that the no-hitter “marked the first time the Mets had a hitless game pitched for them in exhibition or regular season play, instead of against them,” referring to Sandy Koufax’s 1962 no-no and Jim Bunning’s 1964 perfect game.

Little did anyone know back then that it would be another 47 years before a Mets pitcher would finally throw an official no-hitter – Johan Santana on June 1, 2012.

A’s top Rangers in another near spring no-no

The Oakland Athletics nearly no-hit the Texas Rangers on Thursday, the second near spring training no-no this week.

The A’s threw 6 2/3 innings of no-hit ball in a seven-inning Cactus League game at Surprise Stadium, led by Jesús Lizard (4), Jordan Weems (1), Cristian Alvarado (1) and Miguel Romero (2/3). With two out in the seventh, Andy Ibáñez singled up the middle off Romero to break up the no-hit bid.

Oakland’s effort comes just two days after the Pittsburgh Pirates fell one out short of a nine-inning no hitter

On Tuesday, the Pirates’ Steven Brault (2), Miguel Yajure (2), Chris Stratton (1), Edgar Santana (1), Sam Howard (1), Sean Poppen (1) and Nick Mears (2/3) held the Atlanta Braves hitless, but Mears lost the no-no with two outs in the ninth on a Philip Ervin single. The Pirates won that contest 11-1, as Mears balked in a run to forfeit the shutout.

Pirates fall one out shy of spring no-no

The Pittsburgh Pirates came within one out of a Spring Training no-hitter Tuesday during a 10-1 win against the Atlanta Braves at North Port, Florida’s CoolTodayPark.

The Pirates’ Steven Brault (2), Miguel Yajure (2), Chris Stratton (1), Edgar Santana (1), Sam Howard (1) and Sean Poppen (1) no-hit the Atlanta Braves through eight innings before giving the ball to Nick Mears for the ninth.

Mears issued a leadoff walk to Michael Harris, then hit Ryan Goins with a pitch in the back. That brought up Pablo Sandoval, who popped up to the right side of the infield just behind the mound. First baseman Mason Martin, second baseman Kevin Kramer and third baseman Rodolfo Castro converged on the fly, but the trio watched the ball hit the grass. Harris took off for third and was caught out in a rundown, and Sandoval was also ruled out on the play as the umpires called the infield fly rule.

The double-play left just one out to complete the no-hitter, but Philip Ervin lined a 2-2 pitch to shallow right that was knocked down by a strong wind, and his single ended the no-hit bid. After Mears walked Alex Jackson to load the bases, he balked in Goins to forfeit the shutout. Mears got Braden Shewmake to line out to right to end the game.

The Pirates have thrown three Spring Training no-hitters, with the more recent occurring in 1966:

Yanks’ 1909 spring no-no unearthed

NoNoHitters.com has discovered a new Spring Training no-hitter, and it seems to be the first no-no recorded for the New York Yankees franchise.

In a split-squad game on Tuesday, April 6, 1909 — six days before Opening Day — the New York Highlanders’ Roy “Cy” Parkin (6 innings) and Jack Warhop (3 innings) combined to no-hit the Charleston Sea Gulls of the South Atlantic League for a 3-0 win. Parkin and Warhop earned stellar fielding support from Joe Ward, Jimmy Austin and Earle Gardner, according to newspaper accounts.

The Highlanders’ other split-squad that day, which featured most of New York’s regulars, beat the Anderson Electricians of the Carolina Association by a score of 12-7.

Parkin had pitched the previous two seasons for the Binghamton Bingos, and Warhop spent most of 1908 with the Williamsport Millionaires, save five appearances for the Yanks. Their combined gem slips into the second of 31 slots on our Spring Training no-hitters list — just after the Cleveland Naps’ March 14, 1908 spring no-no over the Macon Peaches (Bill Lattimore for 5 innings and Charlie Chech for 4 innings).

'Salida Tom' Hughes ‘Salida Tom’ Hughes

Parkin and Warhop tossed their no-hitter a year and four months ahead of the Highlanders’ “Salida Tom” Hughes no-hitting the Naps for 9⅓ innings in a 1910 scoreless game. Hughes had been cruising along in the nightcap of an August 30 doubleheader at Hilltop Park that day but was tagged for a hit in the 10th. Upon taking the mound for the 11th, he yielded six additional hits and a took a 5-0 loss. The game had been considered an official no-hitter for more than 80 years until the Committee for Statistical Accuracy in 1991 tossed it and 11 other no-hit-through-nine accomplishments from the record books. (We document those games here.)

The first of 11 official Yankees no-hitters came on April 24, 1917, when George Mogridge no-hit the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park for a 2-1 victory.

Parkin, born in what is now Union County, South Dakota, wound up with the Newark Indians of the Eastern League for the 1909, 1910 and 1911 seasons. He finished out his minor-league career with Oakland and San Francisco of the Pacific Coast League, failing to win a spot on a major-league regular-season roster.

Warhop’s sharp spring in 1909 earned him a spot on the Highlanders’ regular-season roster, where he posted a 13-15 record with a 2.40 ERA. The Hinton, West Virginia-born submariner also led the league for two seasons in hit-batsmen (26 in 1909 and 18 in 1910), perhaps from hitters not knowing how to escape the righty’s unorthodox delivery.

Jim Palmer tosses 7-inning Puerto Rico Winter League no-no, 52 years ago today

The Baltimore Orioles’ Jim Palmer tossed a 7-inning no-hitter for Cangrejeros de Santurce in a Puerto Rico Winter League game, 52 years ago today.

On Sunday, December 22, 1968, at Estadio Isidoro García in Mayagüez, Palmer shut down Indios de Mayagüez for a 4-0 win.

Palmer would get his MLB no-no eight months later. Pitching at home for the Orioles at Memorial Stadium on Wednesday, August 13, 1969, Palmer no-hit the Oakland Athletics for an 8-0 win.

Palmer came within two outs of tossing a perfect game at Memorial Stadium four years after his Orioles no-hitter. On June 16, 1973, Palmer retired the first 25 Texas Rangers he faced before Ken Suarez lined a 2-0 pitch up the middle for a single that killed the effort. Palmer told the Baltimore Sun he had considered pitching around Suarez.

“Suarez chokes up on the bat, he’s hard to strike out and I don’t know how to pitch to him as well as I would have liked to,” Palmer told the Sun. “When the count got to 2-0, I didn’t want to walk him, but at the same time I was willing to give up the perfect game to get the no-hitter.”
