Reds’ Miley no-hits Cleveland

The Cincinnati Reds’ Wade Miley no-hit the Cleveland Indians on Friday for a 3-0 win at Progressive Field.

Miley took a perfecto into the sixth inning after a 93-minute rain delay, retiring the first 16 Cleveland Indians batters he faced. That ended when Amed Rosario reached on a fielding error by second baseman Nick Senzel. Miley also issued his only walk that inning to Cesar Hernandez.

Miley struck out eight on the ninth.

It was the Reds first no-hitter since Homer Bailey no-hit the San Francisco Giants on July 2, 2013. The Indians were last no-hit last month, when the Chicago White Sox’s Carlos Rodón tossed a no-no at Guaranteed Rate Field on April 14 for an 8-0 win.

Majors sees first no-no and immaculate inning on same day in nearly 60 years

Wednesday marked the first time the majors has seen a no-no and an immaculate inning on the same day in nearly 60 years.

The Baltimore Orioles’ John Means tossed the majors’ 307th no-hitter on Wednesday afternoon, just missing a perfect game on a dropped-ball strikeout that gave the batter first base. Later that night, the Washington Nationals’ Kyle Finnegan completed the 102nd immaculate inning, fanning Austin Riley, Dansby Swanson and William Contreras in the sixth inning on nine pitches during the Nationals 5-3 loss to the Braves.

That combination hasn’t happened since June 15, 1963, when the Giants’ Juan Marichal no-hit the Colt .45’s and the Braves’ Tony Cloninger tossed an immaculate 8th against the Phillies. The time before that? — June 30, 1962, when the Dodgers’ Sandy Koufax no-hit the New York Mets and kicked off his own effort with an immaculate first inning, fanning Richie Ashburn, Rod Kanehl and Félix Mantilla on a total of nine pitches.

Orioles’ Means no-hits Mariners, only batter reached on dropped-ball K

The Baltimore Orioles John Means three the majors’ first no-hitter Wednesday in which the only baserunner, the Mariners’ Sam Haggerty, reached base on a dropped third strike.

Means struck out 12 and walked none, as the Orioles topped the Mariners at T-Mobile Park 6-0. Means faced the minimum 27 batters as Haggerty was caught stealing.

The only known instance of a perfecto being killed on a dropped third strike happened in Korea. On May 23, 1997, the Hanwha Eagles’ Jeong Min-chul no-hit the OB Bears for an 8-0 win at Jeonju Baseball Stadium, with the only runner occurring on a strikeout with that batter taking first.

In was the Orioles’ first no-hitter since July 13, 1991, when Bob Milacki (6 inn.), Mike Flanagan (1 inn.), Mark Williamson (1 inn.) and Gregg Olson (1 inn.) no-hit the Oakland Athletics at Oakland–Alameda County Coliseum for a 2-0 win. To find the Orioles last single pitcher no-hitter, you have to go way back to August 13, 1969, when Jim Palmer no-hit the A’s at Memorial Stadium for an 8-0 win.

The Seattle Mariners were last no-hit on August 3, 2019, when the Houston Astros’ Aaron Sanchez (6), Will Harris (1), Joe Biagini (1) and Chris Devenski (1) combined for a 9-0 no-no at Minute Maid Park.

Bo no-nos O’s, 59 years ago today

Los Angeles Angels rookie Bo Belinsky threw one of MLB’s three Cinco de Mayo no-hitters, 59 years ago today.

On May 5, 1962, Belinsky no-hit the Baltimore Orioles for a 2-0 win that launched the former Trenton pool shark into Hollywood stardom.

On this date in 1917, the St. Louis Browns’ Ernie Koob no-hit the Chicago White Sox for a 1-0 victory at home at Sportsman’s Park. Browns teammate Bob Groom also no-hit the White Sox the next day, though Groom’s gem came in the second game of a Sunday doubleheader so the two weren’t consecutive.

On Thursday, May 5, 1904, Cy Young, pitching for the Boston Americans (Red Sox) retired all 27 Philadelphia Athletics he faced for a 3-0 perfecto at the Huntington Avenue Grounds. It was his second of career no-hitters that would tie him for the career lead with Larry Corcoran.

Mets no-hit in Philly, 135 years ago today

At Atkinson

At Atkinson

The Philadelphia Athletics’ Al Atkinson no-hit the New York Metropolitans, 135 years ago today.

On Saturday, May 1, 1886, in front of 2,700 fans at Philadelphia’s Jefferson Street Grounds, Atkinson struck out eight and walked three to lead the A’s to a 3-2 win. Three other Mets reached first base on errors, and another took the bag on a force play.

The feat marked Atkinson’s second no-no for the A’s. On Saturday, May 24, 1884, at Philadelphia’s Recreation Park, Atkinson no-hit the Pittsburgh Alleghenys for a 10-1 win.

Ryan tosses 12th one-hitter, ties Feller, 41 years ago

Nolan Ryan tied Bob Feller’s major-league record of 12 one-hitters, 41 years ago today.

On April 26, 1990, while pitching for the Texas Rangers, Ryan one-hit the Chicago White Sox for a 1-0 win. Ryan struck out 16 and walked two, and the no-no spoiler came early when Ron Kittle singled to right in the second inning.

Feller threw three no-hitters and 12 one-hitters over his career, while Ryan tossed seven no-nos alongside his dozen one-hitters.

Bumgarner throws 7-inning doubleheader no-no

The Arizona Diamondbacks’ Madison Bumgarner has thrown the first 7-inning doubleheader no-hitter since MLB instituted the rule in 2020.

Bumgarner no-hit the Atlanta Braves for a 7-0 victory at Truist Park in the second game of a Sunday doubleheader. Only one Braves batter reached on an error, when Ozzie Albies’ wide throw pulled off first base Freddie Freeman on a second-inning infield grounder hit by Nick Ahmed.

Bumgarner’s effort is not an official no-hitter. It joins 37 other shortened efforts, chronicled here.

The Diamondbacks also won the opener on a one-hit complete-game shutout by Zac Gallen.

Siebert gets his annual chance for 42-club company

Baseball’s annual Jackie Robinson Day tradition of dressing everyone in Robinson’s iconic No. 42 carries a side plot in the no-hitter world.

April 15 also marks the only day that Sonny Siebert’s record of being the only pitcher to throw a no-no while wearing No. 42 can fall. Siebert, pitching for the Indians at Cleveland Stadium, on Friday, June 10, 1966, no-hit the Washington Senators for a 2-0 win. A walk and a Chico Salmon throwing error were the only things that kept Siebert from perfection.

Siebert can earn company in the No. 42 club with any no-hitter thrown today. And, in this era of pitch-count pulls early in the season, we could see the first combined no-hitter with every pitcher wearing No. 42 (Similar to the Los Angeles Angels’ Taylor Cole (2) and Félix Peña (7) both wearing No. 45 for a combined no-hitter thrown during a game honoring the late pitcher Tyler Skaggs).
