Yankees’ Germán tosses perfecto against Oakland A’s
The New York Yankees’ Domingo Germán threw a perfect game against the Oakland Athletics Wednesday night, the majors’ first perfecto since 2012.
Germán retired all of the 27 A’s batters he faced at Oakland-Alameda County Stadium, striking out nine hitters and walking none on 99 pitches. It marked the Yankees franchise’s fourth perfecto — most in the majors. Oddly, all four were thrown by pitchers with first names beginning with D — Don Larsen, David Wells, David Cone and Domingo Germán.
The A’s had not been no-hit since July 13, 1991, which was MLB’s longest current streak. That no-no came from the Baltimore Orioles’ Bob Milacki (6 inn.) / Mike Flanagan (1 inn.) / Mark Williamson (1 inn.) / Gregg Olson (1 inn.).
MLB’s last perfect game was tossed by the Seattle Mariners Felix Hernandez against the Tampa Bay Rays on Aug. 15, 2012 at Safeco Field.
Germán’s perfecto also marks the first no-hitter thrown by a pitcher wearing a single-digit number (0). The previous lowest was No. 11 — Doc Gooden and Hideo Nomo.
