BTS of my book launch (the REAL DEAL)
Boy oh boy has this been a book launch. I was just asking a friend what I should put in today’s newsletter and she told me that it would be great to hear about the #BTS of the launch… and how it’s REALLY going. Because you see, she has been privy to everything that has been going on and she’s been there to celebrate the highlights and she’s seen me through the moments where nothing seems to be going right.
Today you will get some insider scoop into the book launch process and how it really went, because I promise, its not all rainbows as it looks from the outside.
That being said, I want you all to know that I truly do appreciate every single comment you leave on IG, every message you send me about the book, and every post you do. These are what have fueled me through all the harder moments (and yes, there have been some pretty crazy ones).
So read on my lovely friends and learn about the highs, the lows, and what I’ve learned from it all.
The Highs & The Lows – # BTS of what really happens in a book launch
The highlights:
My book coming out!I mean, c’mon, you knew I had to put this here

KTLA TVshow (although this was originally a low). If you remember from last week’s email, the show did not go as planned and we ended up filming it in the green room. It aired this week and they actually made it look pretty amazing. CLICK HERE to watch it & let me know your thoughts!
Free books! I was thrilled to partner with MoneyTips who is offering a free book to those who sign up for a credit report. I did get some harsh emails from a few asking why I was doing this and for me, it was actually a win win because I believe we need to know about our financials as much as health. I was amazed at how many of you wanted to claim the book and can’t wait for you to receive it.
Shape magazine online feature.I was asked to take 10 ingredients and make a week’s worth of meals – which if you know me – then I thoroughly enjoyed this, because it shows that eating yummy and healthy meals doesn’t need to be boring or expensive.
Cover of LA Yoga Magazine + 8 page feature. I’m still amazed that your girl is on the cover and am grateful for everyone who has shared their copy with me.
Thoughtfully Magazine feature on the book and my meal prep hacks to see results. It is really a stunning piece and I was thrilled to see it in print.
WeWork event speaking on building your online brand, which I was able to share about the book and at the end of the day, helping others succeed.
Barnes & Noble event at The Grove. I’m still pinching myself that I was able to speak here. It was even better that I got to invite my dear friend, Zack Peter, to interview me which made it far more fun.
My book launch party. This is happening tomorrow and I’m really excited to have a glass of champagne with my closest in LA and really just appreciate the fact that I wrote a book.
Seeing all your photos!I am just loving seeing the posts and hearing your comments on your favorite parts of the book and what recipes you love (highlights below).
The lows:
I have been tested more times than I care to even admit and have cried soooo many days during the launch. The pressure I put on myself to sell a lot of copies and get the book into your hands became too much and I kept breaking down. Things just did not flow as they should including PR related things, sales, TV shows, people posting who said they would… I mean the list goes on….
But, what is a HIGHLIGHT of the cry sessions and the immense pressure + things not going as planned is I’ve really learned to LET GO and enjoy every moment. I’ve been taught more than I thought possible about our own expectations and not holding on to things you cannot control.
Big fights with my boyfriend during this time. I share this because we are all human and while I was hyper stressed and he was in town to support, I got on his case a lot and we fought a lot. This is normal when there is a lot of pressure on someone and of course we take it out on those we love. But with each fight it really made me realize that he was here to support and love me and so we were able to work through them.
Not selling as many copies as I hoped. This was a total bummer for me because I really wanted to hit New York Times (I mean, what author doesn’t), and I didn’t even come close. It’s a big of an ego bruise, but I will just keep on pushing through because I know this book will help a lot of people.
Not sleeping. From the outside I share the good moments on Insta and I promote all the happy things happening. But I have had huge troubles sleeping during the launch and it really has taken it’s toll. I meditate, do yoga, cryotherapy, take supplements and sometimes these just dont work. I’m hoping things ease up though because sleep is so vitally important!
There are so many more highlights though, because when I look at each ‘low’ moment, I realize that it taught me something. And at the end of the day, that is what really matters – not that we “fuck up” but that we learn from our mistakes. I never believe in pure good or bad things, because each moment we grow from so it all becomes better in the end.
I share all of this for you to understand that we are all human. That social media makes our life look amazing. And that you might think others have perfect lives – no one does. Through every good comes hard moments, through every hard moment comes something good. It’s the flow of life.
My hope is that you have been able to feel a part of this journey with me and really enjoy seeing the launch process. It’s been wonderful to include you in everything and I really love when you respond to my emails with your thoughts and comments.
All my love,
N

The biggest thing holding you back: Sleep
When it comes to your health goals, whether it is weight loss, getting toned, or just overall becoming healthier, there is ONE thing that I can guarantee is holding you back.
Why do I guarantee this? Because we live in a day and age where this one thing is given the least amount of importance, and instead we spend our time fretting over how many minutes we spent jogging on a treadmill, how our photo did on IG, or if we ate all of our meals.
So what is this KEY INGREDIENT that we are lacking in? Any guesses?
Well, keep reading because I am going to give you my biggest tips to make sure that you are on track to getting the results you want.
The answer: SLEEP!
If you answer yes to any of the below then the chances of you getting enough quality, REM sleep, is likely low. And this is absolutely affecting everything from your work, your fitness goals, to cortisol levels in your body and making it harder to lose weight.
Have you had any cravings over the past week?
Do you check your phone or computer within 30 minutes of going to bed?
Do you need caffeine to feel ready for the day?
Do you have a hard time falling asleep or staying asleep?
Do you ever get anxiety?
Do you hit a 3pm slump and crave sugar?
As a society, we have gotten to a place where checking your social media and responding to emails at all hours of the day are more important than putting our phones away and taking time for ourself.
I’ll be the first to admit that I will find myself laying in bed at 11.30pm unable to sleep and I’ll reach for my phone to put on a meditation to listen to, and end up checking social media. I also find that if I don’t sleep enough I literally feel like I have a hangover. I mean what the…. !!! (Raise your hand if you’ve ever felt this!)
BUT- I want to give you some awesome solutions if you’re feeling sleep deprived and show you that you CAN make some simple changes.
Foods + Supplements to help you sleep
Cherries, bananas, spinach and almonds all have varying levels of magnesium, calcium, and potassium which help your body (check out my new book for recipes with all these yummy foods!)
Lemon balm, part of the mint family, can be brewed like mint tea
Magnesium supplements (this also helps to keep your digestive system regular when you’re traveling)
Maca powder to give you a boost of energy, instead of coffee
Lavender essential oil. Use this on your temples and dab on wrists or add to an essential oil diffuser (I actually recommend essential oils for just about everything and use them throughout the day in my purifyer, in my water bottle, when I take a bath, to wake up, etc)

Be like cat. Sleep like cat. Put your phone away like cat.
Other Tips!
Make sure you are putting your phone away AT LEAST 30 minutes before bed & keep in in another room.
Meditation in the morning or at night, apps like CALM or HEADSPACE are great to give you 5 minute calming meditations free.
If you CAN’T SLEEP, listen to this (scroll to bottom) and this. I use them to sleep at night and highly recommend them!
Make your bedroom a very peaceful place! Mine takes form of the minimalism trend, with only a few candles (see my favorite one here), white sheets, and almost white everything. This is key to sleeping better!
Once you implement these tips & tricks and are fulfilling your nightly 8 hours of QUALITY sleep, you will begin to see your cravings disappear, find increased energy to fuel your workouts, and decrease your reliance on caffeine to stay awake. You’ll also feel more clear every day to make better choices – and hey, I can even say more sleep will improve your relationships too!
I hope that these tips and tricks help you to get better sleep and to feel rejuvenated throughout the day. In my last email I talked about superfoods – these are also a definite yes in my book to help you reduce caffeine during the day, which results in better sleep.
Tons of love,
Nikki

My Story – Overcoming Two Eating Disorders
This has been one of the hardest things I’ve ever publicly come out with and it’s taken me years to even be able to admit it to myself. However, I believe that by doing this it will help a lot of people who might be struggling with food and their body. I share this to help others to know that you are not alone.
So here it is: I’ve had two eating disorders – anorexia and binge eating.
.sg-popup-overlay-4,
.sg-popup-content-4 {
z-index: 9999 !important;

#sg-popup-content-wrapper-4 {

Small warning: this might trigger you if you are currently facing your own eating disorder
(the video goes into some detail that is not mentioned here, there is also a full version)
How my eating disorders started
It wasn’t until I moved to Los Angeles at 19 when my first eating disorder started. I was going to university full time, working, and modeling. I was all alone in a new place, my family and bf were back home, I couldn’t sleep, and I suddenly found myself lonelier than I had ever been. It seemed the only thing that I could do to have some control over my life was to restrict my eating. (As I got skinnier I also seemed to get more jobs in the modeling industry, something that perpetuated my eating disorder.)
Morning: instant coffee with sugar free creamer + 2 packets sweet and low, a one egg omelette with a slice of orange fake cheese and 2 pepperoni slices.
Lunch/ Dinner: bowl of iceberg lettuce with a few more slices of pepperoni, a small bit of ranch dressing and a few croutons. Dinner was either the omelette or salad again.
If I had late classes, I’d make a green tea with a small bit of skim milk and 4 packets of sweet and low. I did this for one school year. I would also run for nearly an hour prior to breakfast each morning, then go to another fitness class during school.
This was also the first time that I stopped sleeping, something that still affects me to this day. I went to the school counselor and was given Ambien, where I begin my addiction to sleeping pills for the next 5 years.
My eating disorder goes away… then comes back
After moving back to Colorado (I was on a year long exchange program) friends barely recognized me – I was skin and bones. But I felt so good and was proud of my tiny body. My value was so heavily tied to how I looked.
I began an internship at Gaiam where I did yoga a few days a week at lunch, which brought me so much joy. My food normalized and I gained back a bit of weight. My food and sleep issues seemed to disappear as quick as they came. I was happy, no longer lonely, and my value was now tied to my work at Gaiam.
After graduating from university at 20, I moved to Shanghai to pursue full-time modeling, this time the lonely feelings being even more intense than LA and I found myself barely eating at all. I had nothing to occupy my mind during the day (like school or work) and was a slave to if I had castings or not. This would deem how much I would workout in a day. I’d go to the gym for an hour or longer in the morning, and back in the evening for another hour to two hours. We had cockroaches in our kitchen so I never dared to cook, rather I would eat one tiny yogurt for breakfast, skip eating until I thought I would faint then get a bag of salted peanuts and diet coke, then at night have some carrots. I relied on sleeping pills every night.
I went from 110lbs to 98lbs.
Anorexia turns into Binge Eating
After years of restriction and not eating, the anorexia finally turned into binging and sometimes purging. After years of my body gaining and losing weight, the insane amount of restriction, and lack of nutrients I needed – I started to eat everything in sight when I could. My body was finally saying ENOUGH. FEED ME.
But instead of feeding myself healthy, nourishing meals (remember, health was NOT what it is today!), I would eat chocolate, hummus, pizza, donuts, pasta. I mean you name it, I’d eat it. As I moved across the world modeling, my value was so heavily tied to the way I looked. I would starve myself, then I’d get hungry and binge, then purge if I could. Thank god I didn’t have a strong gag reflex because without a doubt I would have had that as a full-on eating disorder as well. Rather, I would try to make myself throw up, tears streaming from my face as I’m shoving my finger down my throat, and nothing would happen.

This photo was taken in Athens while I was modeling. I loved how skinny I was but I thought my hips were still too big. You can see where my mind is by the words I write ‘hatred, acceptance, saddness’
Instagram – my dark side
When I started my IG account in 2013, it was a place that I could keep myself accountable. I would post inspiring images of girls who looked fit and foods that I knew were good for me, all to get myself to go workout that day, or make a healthier meal.
Because I was modeling I wasn’t comfortable publicly admitting that I had eating disorders, so I would post headless body shots of myself, talking about my journey of the eating disorders. I would share when I had a good day of eating and or when I binged and felt fat. I would tell my followers about my struggles, which was easy to do because no one knew my name (or saw my face). The account was called ‘skinnyminime_xoxo‘ and it was my private sanctuary to be free in a world where I didn’t feel I had anyone to go to. My community started to grow and people were so supportive. The more that I shared my journey and what I went through, the more others opened up to me.
What people didn’t know was that while I posted these #fitspo images, I was following a lot of accounts that promoted eating disorders with the hashtags #ANA (anorexia) and #ED (eating disorder). It’s a little known fact that in the eating disorder world you talk about Ana and Ed like people, like they are your friends. I call them the Siamese Twins (more on that below). I would scour the internet for websites that shared and promoted ways to keep your eating disorder, even though you were fighting, tips to throw up, stay skinny, avoid eating when out. You name it – I searched for it.
So it was a catch 22 that while I’m sharing this positive message of health, I was equally not ready to let my eating disorders go.
During this time I would have some pretty amazing days. It’s when I started learning about things like superfood powders, healthier options for foods to eat, and meditation. I felt good. Yet, I would also have insanely bad days and remember thinking, I just want to know that Gisele and Miranda Kerr had shitty days. That they felt like crap about their body, binged, and that they got over it. I literally needed to know that I wasn’t alone. So my IG became a place that I promised myself that I would share all my struggles for others to know they weren’t alone.
But, as the account grew, the less I was able to share my story. I was becoming a wellness expert and started to get nervous of people’s judgments of how skinny I was and I could not handle the comments of ‘I needed to eat a cheeseburger.’
So I stopped sharing my experiences of trying to overcome eating disorders.
I ended up changing my IG name to ‘staysharpbestrong‘ once I publicly shared my face and took my mask off. I converted the account to all fitness and health related images and took down anything that resembled my eating disorders struggles.

My waist – literally 2D – where I still wanted to lose weight

The Siamese Twins of eating disorders
I equate an eating disorder to that of a Siamese Twin, because it is part of you. It’s the person to your right that gets you more than anymore. This person talks to you, comforts you, and tells you everything is going to be okay (when you listen to his/her messages of the ED). And at the same time, anyone who has had an ED knows that this Siamese Twin is something you’d like to kill off immediately. You hate that they control your life and you don’t know how to stop it. You want freedom from the restriction of what you eat. You want to be a normal person.
But herein lies the problem, when you have an ED and you are trying to get rid of it, you are literally killing off a part of you. She screams in agony as you do things to make her go away. He rages like fire when you tell him you’re going to do things that are healthier for your mind. In my experience, I found that killing off this girl inside of me was harder than anything else I’ve done.
She likes to pop up her ugly head once in a while now and tell me that I’m fat; that I should diet and get my collarbones back the way they were. She wants me to have my hip bones jutting out. She believes that the control over how my body looks makes me of higher value to society. But I recognize and acknowledge that this Siamese Twin is not me. It is a false reality. And I never, ever want to go back there. I am too happy with my life now.
That doesn’t mean I don’t still have bad days, but it means that I have given myself the tools to succeed and not let her come back.
Why I went into the health world
As I started learning about nutrition to help me overcome the eating disorders, I realized I had a passion for it. I’m now a certified health coach, raw foods specialist, certified in sports nutrition, nutrition for everyday living, certified yoga teacher, and trained as a vegan chef. I knew that as I was overcoming my eating disorders and sharing the knowledge I found to work, the more people I was also affecting in a positive light.
This is why I do what I do. Because I have literally overcome two eating disorders by eating the way that I do, not to mention insomnia (which I have been hospitalized 2x for). I focused on healthy balanced meals with no restriction, eating lots of colors, added meditation, and journaling. I started seeing exercise as a reward, not a punishment. This formula, with food being the main factor, has transformed my life and my health: it literally made my survive.

I went on Accutane 3x and this is after all of them.

My journey into the health world gave me good skin.
I have never promoted restricted eating (or calling things a ‘cheat meal’) because it’s a world I NEVER want to visit again. Food has been the enemy of my life for too many years. I no longer fear food. I don’t fear pizza, or pasta, or chocolate cake, or alcohol. All of these are lovely things that I get to have in times of enjoyment. I have learned that when I am stressed or tired and want to eat, food will not solve these.
I am so incredibly passionate about sharing my way of living with others because I know what it’s like to be fearful of food, to hate your body, to feel like you’re alone. I’ve managed to overcome: depression, anxiety, acne, insomnia, anorexia, binge eating disorder, and body dysmorphia.
And I’m telling you right now, you can too. I am here to help you. I’ve been there, done that and I am ready to begin this chapter of using all the tools I’ve learned. If you are facing an eating disorder or disordered eating – my recipes and way of thinking does help; they worked on me. This is why I absolutely know that my detox book will work for you, and why my new book (about meal prepping) will change your life.

Do you self sabotage?
Have you ever self sabotage? If so, keep reading to find out WHY and how to stop it!
I had a lot of questions and comments on feeling overwhelmed and so much pressure we put on ourselves from the last email and so I thought I would put this together with something I know we ALL struggle with: self sabotage. Are you feeling BURNT OUT?
I’ve missed you. I truly have. Alas, there was a big reason why I needed to take a break and stop blogging and emailing for a while. This was because of feeling burnt out
It’s something that I’ve been feeling for a year now, and I know a LOT of you are also feeling it. I keep getting constant comments from my friends who work 9-5 jobs, those who are entrepreneurs, yoga teachers, influencers, and huge authors. And the consensus I’m getting from everyone is that…
People are burnt out and tired. Myself included, are overworked and feeling the stresses of social media.
It seems like something has shifted and social media is not longer ‘fun’ like it used to be. It’s making us feel like we have to keep up 24/7. And this started weighing on me after I did my social detox last year. I came back and just couldn’t get myself fully into the grind and hustle.

Me and my friend Kerri in SF, prior to our trip to Africa!
It wasn’t making me happy. I felt I had lost my purpose and my value.
So I traveled. A lot. 15 trips to be specific all over the world. I traveled to learn what would make me happy and content. I flew to Paris (see main image) and dyed my hair brown to figure out this shift in me! (More on that later!)
I started spending more time working with companies as a consultant and less time on my personal stuff.
And I took a bit of time away from my own brand, to really understand what I wanted to do, versus currently doing. I also had this BIG THING in the works called my 2nd book coming out(!) and had to mentally prepare for this.
My life also started shifting away from what I was posting and presenting on social to wanting to speak my truth. My throat chakra (let me know if you want more info on the Chakras!) was SUPER blocked because there are some big things I haven’t told you. I was too scared too. It’s taken my years to be able to share this with people. But… That will come soon, I promise.
In the meantime, I wanted to share some things for you if you’ve been feeling burned out and overwhelmed. These are tools that I have learned along the way and have tremendously helped me!
