Sneek Peek: Miss Georgiana and the Dragon
The dragons are still running the show, running the plot off the rails. But they have permitted me to offer you this sneak peak of the new book–at least they haven’t insisten on changing the working title yet: Miss Georgiana and the Dragon.

According to Miss Withington, the start of a term, was always marked with a relatively formal event. A little frivolity, a little ceremony, and a little reminder of the expectations of society, all rolled into one, would se...
New Book Released!
News! My latest book, Meet Your Mark, just got released! It is available in all Kindle stores and on Kindle Unlimited. This is the second book in my series, A Collection of Unusual Tales. Each of these stories has something a little out of the ordinary. This story features soul marks, a theme I’ve enjoyed reading for a while now and wanted to try my hand at. I hope you like my take on it.
Meet Your Mark: In a world where one may choose a soul mark on their thirteenth birthday, Elizabeth Benn...

How Lady Catherine Became a “Witch”, by Jack Caldwell
Greetings, everyone. Jack Caldwell here.
The monthly theme “Which Witch: Magic and Malevolence in Austen” was a little tough for me. I don’t write fantasy (at least yet), so how was I going to come up with a post this month? Then I thought about the most “malevolent” character in Pride and Prejudice, (a novel without true villains in it, but I digress)–Lady Catherine de Bourgh. A “witch” if there ever was one.
How did she get that way? Was sh...

JASNA AGM & Other Travels
Hello everyone!
Last week, both Shannon and Diana talked about their time at the JASNA AGM, and since I was also there, I wanted to share my impressions. As some of you know from Facebook, I was in Belgium earlier in September, too, and I thought I’d make some Jane Austen links to my time there. I have been busy, travel-wise, which I assure you is not the norm, but Belgium was because my darling child is doing a study abroad year there, and her dad and I went to get her settled in (and to have a...

Dispelling the Gloom, Part 2
Greetings, Austen Friends! I hope October has been as lovely for you as it’s been for me. You should see the trees around my house: flaming reds, sunset oranges, lemon yellows…I find myself wanting to spend all my time taking walks and staring up at trees.
However, I do occasionally have to teach…and I get to write! Here’s Part II of “Dispelling the Gloom,” my response to the “Which Witch: Magic and Malevolence in Austen” theme for the month. (You can find Part I here.)
I had planned to end the ...

Adventures at the AGM, Part 2

Syrie James and Diana Birchall in their play “What Lucy Steele?” at the Victoria JASNA AGM.
As Shannon Winslow said yesterday, in her delightful post about her own adventures at the JASNA AGM in Victoria, B.C.: “Frequent attendees say that every AGM has its own personality and flavor, and there will be something uniquely special about each one.” I am nothing if not a frequent attendee, having attended my first Annual General Meeting of the Jane Austen Society of North America as long ago as the...

Adventures at the AGM, Part 1
I’ve been to Victoria and back, and so now here is your promised report on the JASNA AGM! – at least the first part. Turns out there was too much good stuff to pack into one post, so Diana will pick up with part 2 tomorrow. But I’m going to start with some pictures and highlights, followed by a fun anecdote about a bonnet. As you will see, it was truly like something straight out of a Jane Austen novel!
“Look here, I have bought this bonnet. I do not think it is very pretty; but I thought I mig...

Christmas Book Release
Happy Launch Week! Thanks for joining me for the launch of my newest book, “Frosted Window Panes.” Why ‘Launch Week?’ Well, it’s always a guessing game when the paperback will be approved and go live on amazon, and yesterday I got the notice that it was now live! Yeah! The ebook is on pre-order and scheduled for release this Wednesday, Oct. 12.
As I wrote in my post last week, this story began many years ago with just the ending as a stand-alone short story. Then a ...

Frosted Window Panes
I am excited to be here again! I have been absent for some time – well, here but not here. I had to take a step back a few years ago because of varying circumstances, but I am excited to let you know that I have a new book coming out!
The book is a Modern Pride and Prejudice Variation, part of my Times and Seasons Novella series. The first of which was Encounter to Remember, which was published in 2020. The kindle is now available for pre-order on Amazon, due out October 12, and the paperback sh...

Dispelling the Gloom, Part 1
When I saw this month’s theme—“Which Witch: Magic and Malevolence in Austen”—I was frightened, terribly frightened! While magic and malevolence are perfect concepts for the month of Halloween, I have never once attempted a fantastical Austenesque variation. Many authors—many here at Austen Variations—have written compelling Austenesque fantasies; indeed, they have taken some of the very best elements of P&P (power, attraction, love) and melded them beautifully with the magic of t...
