On to the start of the story. I will be sharing more over the next couple of weeks as we approach publication day, Tuesday, 6 April.

Dangerous Magic: Book Launch & Giveaway

Blog Tour Monica Fairview Dangerous MagicIt seems like I’ve been waiting forever for DANGEROUS MAGIC: A PRIDE AND PREJUDICE to come out. I wrote this novel last year, during lockdown, and I wanted to escape to a kingdom far, far away.  What better place to escape to than Jane Austen’s England — don’t we all love to go there? — except that this Regency world has the added element of magic. As you can see on the book cover, I have a golden coach at the top. It’s a symbol of her journey away from the comfort of Longbourn and to a new life...

Gossip and Scandal in Jane Austen’s World

The more things change the more they stay the same. Comeuppance in Jane Austen’s World could come in the form of  gossip columns.

It seems people have always been hungry for news. Not unlike today with abounding media outlets, newspapers proliferated during the Regency era. In spite of heavy taxation, high costs, and government censorship (that could include prosecution for libel!) by 1816, thirty one national newspapers were published in Britain, including fourteen in London itself. Some publi...

Wickham’s Comeuppance: How shall we punish him?

There are some characters we simply love to hate: Lady Catherine, Miss Bingley, Wickham.

I hope you enjoyed Lady Catherine’s comeuppance in Shannon Winslow’s post the other day. So delicious!

A few years ago, I posted a couple of short stories where I poked fun at Miss Bingley. If you haven’t read them, these links will take you there: An Eventful Morning and Miss Bingley’s Last Picnic.

Miss Bingley and Lady Catherine are such perfect targets, with their airs and graces and their noses in the ai...

Comeuppance: Lady Catherine Gets Hers

Happy March! This month, some of us will be posting on the theme of COMEUPPANCE, which is defined as “something unpleasant regarded as just punishment.” And who is more deserving of it than Lady Catherine?

In P&P, we know she gets her just punishment when Darcy defies her edict that he must marry Anne. But we miss out on most of the fun, because it happens off stage. We don’t get to see their confrontation, the one about which Darcy later tells Elizabeth, “It taught me to hope.”

I decided that s...

Mr Darcy Proves His Point

Good morning to all in the JAFF world! We’re winding up our month, with its theme of Love/Hate relationships and I thought I would dust off an old short story of mine for you. Hope you enjoy this tale of a quick path from hate to love for D&E.

————————————–

The ball given at the elegant town house in Mayfair was unlike anything the eldest Miss Bennets had ever attended. Elizabeth had anticipated the evening with both delight and dread, simultaneously longing to study the characters of the ton ev...

Excerpt Love-Hate New Release and Giveaway

Brrrr!

At least, that’s what I’ve been saying a lot lately, and I’m sure there are those of you in colder parts of the country than Oregon. Whose idea was it to have a winter storm in February, anyway? Foul, I say!

Anyway, I hope you’re all keeping safe and warm. My contribution to our February theme of Love/Hate is a book that kicks off a Battle of Flirting. It’s a game of one-up-man-ship as Darcy and Elizabeth try to get the better of each other by making each other blush. Who do you think wil...

Love/Hate: Excerpt from To Conquer Pride

As you may have noticed, February’s theme here at Austen Variations is love/hate relationships, which, for those of us who read and write JAFF, probably brings to mind Fitzwilliam Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet above any other couple.

So, although I am *this close* to typing “The End” on my current WIP, I thought for today’s post I would dip back into the archives and share an excerpt from my first novel, To Conquer Pride. This scene takes place towards the end of the book, and, to be honest, probab...

What I’m writing – old and new!

It’s been a busy couple of weeks for The Price of Pride, with not one, but two, of the best reviews I’ve ever had. I’m all a-twitter, feeling like Mrs. Bennet clutching for her smelling salts! Ten thousand a year! A house in town! Two glowing five-star reviews! Here’s a quote from From Pemberley to Milton:

The Price of Pride is one of the most beautiful love stories I’ve ever read with intense and electrifying scenes between Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth. They have a long road to go through to find t...
