I find that the trick is this: Give myself permission to write badly for a while.

Writer's block is often just the fear of not writing up to the quality that we expect from ourselves. Or in another sense the fear of writing badly.

But if I open a file and just start typing, knowing that if I produce rubbish I can delete it, the creative juices flow and I find I'm writing well again. then it's time to turn back to the real project.

Sometimes however the pieces I write to cure writer's block contain really good story ideas that I use later in something else.
R. Billing I don't really have a list. I'd like to read the rest of Bill Bryson's books, and I'm always on the lookout for new SF.

This novel suffers from a few faults, but overall it is so well-written as to make up for most of them. The opening chapters contain a lot of explanation of the history and technology, most of which could have either been left out or deferred. Also t ...more

Robert A. Heinlein
“Still rarer is the man who thinks habitually, who applies reason, rather than habit pattern, to all his activity. Unless he masques himself, his is a dangerous life; he is regarded as queer, untrustworthy, subversive of public morals; he is a pink monkey among brown monkeys -- a fatal mistake. Unless the pink monkey can dye himself brown before he is caught.

The brown monkey's instinct to kill is correct; such men are dangerous to all monkey customs.

Rarest of all is the man who can and does reason at all times, quickly, accurately, inclusively, despite hope or fear or bodily distress, without egocentric bias or thalmic disturbance, with correct memory, with clear distinction between fact, assumption, and non-fact.”
