Innocence & Carnality Part Two – Ch. 8 #mmromance #freereads #steampunk #lgbtbooks

At some point Nathan & Blythe have to return…

We’re ready to resume our story of Nathan Valencus and his odious marriage to Lord Rother Marsh Delaga III. We’re going to pick up where we left off, but if you missed Part One you can catch up on the link below which will take you to the story page on Gay Authors.org where it’s hosted:

As much fun as doing the weekly Wednesday Briefs posting for Part One, the 1k word limit per week was working against me. Given it’s size, I decided I was too impatient to share Part Two. So each Wednesday I will share a preview of each chapter along with the link to the full chapter on Gay Authors.

And now on to Ch. 8…

Ch. 8

The entire carriage ride Blythe stayed tense, on alert. His head swiveled at every movement or sound like the ferocious guard dog I knew he could be. We sat close with our legs touching, knowing it might be the last time we ever touched again. The crunch of the wheels on the cobblestones and the clop of hooves were all I could hear. My heartbeat had fallen into dead silence.

We were heading home and the impending doom grew with each city block we passed. The scenery outside became more familiar as the ride progressed. It didn’t give me comfort, only twisted the gears of anticipation running my dread.

“When we get back, I’ll have to do what I’m told, when I’m told, and pretend I like it. Is this what it’s like to be taken to prison?”

Blythe’s massive hand engulfed mine. “Pretty much.”

Blurb: Sawyer is too busy to worry about something as frivolous as Christmas. College is hard, but he’s focused on getting into law school. Kable is studying to make the family business, Del Buon Gusto, into a successful chain restaurant. When a party debacle at the restaurant gives Kable a chance to get close to Sawyer, he’s shocked to learn Sawyer’s a Christmas Grinch. He’s determined to change Sawyer’s mind, but their dates are one debacle after another. It might not be possible to make this into Sawyer’s first Merry Christmas after all.

Winter landscape of village in the mountains

Excerpt:

What a waste of time. He could’ve been home starting his paper or even watching a movie if he wanted to slack off.

Fed up avoiding questions of family traditions and travel plans, Sawyer strolled away from the crowd in the dining room and headed toward the tree. He nodded and smiled at a few people but didn’t stop. Everyone else was enjoying the appetizers that had just come out, but he’d already had dinner before he left home, since he’d expected to work. He could pass more time pretending to examine the ornaments or watching the snow drift down now that the storm finally hit. He’d just have to wait a little longer until he could politely make his escape.

“You don’t like eggnog?”

“What?” Sawyer blinked and shrugged the hand off his shoulder. He took a step to the side. He’d been focused on the snow, watching the puffy flakes float down to coat the sidewalks and road. The grassy verge along the road was already completely white. He hadn’t even heard Kable approaching, which was odd because he was normally impossible to miss. He was just as loud and energetic as his dad.

“Your cup is still full.” Kable gestured toward the red cup in Sawyer’s hand. “Usually when you don’t drink something that means you don’t like it.”

“It smells gross, and I definitely don’t think a dairy product should be this thick and still be drinkable.” Sawyer’s filter was gone, just like it usually was around Kable. He got so nervous, he always ended up saying whatever came to him. It wasn’t like he was trying to hide that he was gay—everyone already knew that—but he hoped his crush wasn’t as obvious. He’d had enough embarrassment for the evening.

Kable laughed. “Then why’d you take it?”

“It seemed like the thing to do.” Sawyer rotated the cup between his palms, disgusted by the way the glop reacted. Surely it couldn’t be safe to drink the stuff.

“So, is it just dairy-based holiday drinks you don’t like? Or is it something more? You haven’t had a single thing to eat, and you’re not exactly dressed for the party.  There’s so much fun to be had from dressing up for Christmas parties.” Kable waved a hand in front his chest. “Like this.” He was wearing an awful sweater with reindeer prancing around a Christmas tree that had bedazzled ornaments decorating every puffy bough. Not even something that hideous could detract from his dark-haired, blue-eyed handsomeness… but really, Sawyer shouldn’t be noticing that at all.

Sawyer scoffed. “I’d rather be here in my underwear than wear something like that.”

“Or your uniform?” Kable gestured toward Sawyer’s black slacks and plain white shirt. “Is it just that you don’t have another outfit?”

“Of course I have other outfits! Why would you think that?” Sawyer snapped. His face was hot and prickly; no one else had mentioned his clothes, even if they noticed he was wearing his work uniform. It’s not like he was wearing something inappropriate, like shorts and a t-shirt.

Kable cocked his head to one side. “If you had something else, why didn’t you wear that?”

“You’re nosy, you know?” He was always asking questions and getting into everyone’s business. The others didn’t seem to mind. Kable was Mr. McArthur’s son, and he worked the occasional shift at the restaurant when they were short a waiter even though he was in school full-time to get a business degree. He was friendly, sometimes too friendly, and made Sawyer uncomfortable with his casual intimacy. Kable was always patting him on the back or arm when they spoke, and Sawyer liked it a little too much.

“Yep.” Kable grinned. “But wait, don’t tell me! You never come out for a drink with the rest of us, not even for coffee, and you’re always studying those books on your breaks. I’ve never heard you even talk about doing something like going to a party. You thought you were here to work tonight, didn’t you?”

Sawyer grit his teeth. “So what? Your dad just said he wanted us all here.”

“And you didn’t put two and two together?” Kable gestured toward the room.

“I did once I got here. He said he was throwing a party for friends and family. What else was I going to think?” Sawyer was getting tired of Kable’s questions. He lifted his before Kable could notice his scowl and figure out he was getting to him and made the stupid mistake of taking a drink.

“Oh, ew.” Sawyer desperately wanted to spit out the eggnog, but there was no polite way to do so. He forced the mouthful down, swallowing repeatedly in an attempt to get rid of the liquid still coating his tongue. It was as horrible as he thought it would be. He stared at the cup in disgust. “People actually drink this… on purpose?”

Author Bio:

The number one question folks ask Alicia when she shares she’s a MM romance author: “Why gay fiction? Why write men when you’re a woman?” and her answer is: “Why the hell not!” Alicia Nordwell is one of those not so rare creatures, a reader turned writer. Striving to find an interesting story one day, she decided to write what she wanted instead. Then the voices started… Yep, not only does she talk about herself in the third person for bios, she has voices in her head constantly clamoring to get out. Fortunately, with the encouragement of her family and friends, she decided for her own sanity to keep writing.

Now you can find her stories both free and e-published. When she’s not on the computer typing away, she’s a wife and a mom of two in the dreary, yet ideal for her redhead complexion, Pacific Northwest. Except for when she disappears into one of the many worlds in her head, of course! She can also be found quite often at her blog, where she has a lot of free fiction for readers to enjoy or working hard, or maybe hardly working, as an admin on GayAuthors.org under her online nickname, Cia.

So each Wednesday I will share a preview of each chapter along with the link to the full chapter on Gay Authors.

Welcome to the beginning of Ch. 7

Ch. 7

Warmth and luxury suffused me with gossamer tendrils of pleasure. Glowing embers that never cooled. It surrounded me and weaved it’s magic on my weary bones. Caressing away my aches and pains, it coiled tight around me and staved off the looming nightmares.

And I knew there would be nightmares.

Flashes of David and the alley came and went. Knife points and violent ends. Fooling death’s hand. Snippets of fear laced with anger pricked at me, but my delightful shelter warded them away into manageable discomfort.

Ch. 6

I tried to dig my heels into the unyielding cobblestones, but I was being hauled so quick, I couldn’t keep my balance. Screaming was futile through the gloved hand holding my mouth closed. Panic and rage exploded out of me, but I wasn’t strong enough to get free.

The street vanished as the alley swallowed me into its gullet. It wouldn’t be long before there would be no chance for anyone to find me.

A somewhat familiar voice caught my attention. “Hold her already!”

Ch. 5

I was famished. Rother and I hadn’t left the bedroom all day and didn’t emerge until the next morning. A feat we hadn’t accomplished since the days after my arrival. We would have seen daylight sooner, but Rother’s insatiable appetites had to be appeased. He pounced as I attempted to clothe myself. His stamina astounded me.

Each of my steps were sluggish and careful. I’d only slept from pure exhaustion and ached in ways I’d forgotten since our relationship was set aside. My grumbling stomach required fuel. Hopefully, no one would be present at the dining table. I didn’t look forward to sitting down with witnesses.

“You seem to be walking tenderly this morning.” Rother, on the other hand looked refreshed. Chest out and on the verge of smiling, each jubilant step radiated with pride.

Ch. 4

I gave a dirty look to the music box. Before long, I would need to open it up again and try to diagnose the malfunction and not kick the monstrosity over as I was tempted. The only thought stopping me was the vast amount of additional work to repair if I did. With my luck, it would shatter into an unrecognizable heap of parts.

Last night, Rother offered me the chance to hire someone to fix the machine, but I declined. Clockwork was my niche, my special skill that set me apart from the dull Victorian noble horde. Part craft and part inventive puzzle, the work kept me grounded while my family undermined me. In this instance, quitting was not an option. There was no quarter for compromise, only success. In my own way, I had as much pride as Rother.

The mantle clock’s graceful chime mocked me with its notes. I’d repaired it months ago and it performed without flaws. It also told me I was late for brunch.

Synopsis:

For Becket “Cat” Rowland, falling in love has never been easy. The summer he meets Micah Forbes, the intensity of his feelings brings back all the memories of eight years earlier.

Following a brutal attack that left him nearly dead, Cat is a mess inside and out. To cope with the trauma and with his view of himself that he’s nothing but an empty shell, he’s taken three vows: simplicity, chastity, and silence. His once colorful, trendy, and often feminine wardrobe has been replaced with jeans and t-shirts, and he’s sworn off men. He locks himself away from the world, using the memorized prayers of his childhood as his only speech.

Cat is lost to himself and everyone around him until another hospitalization introduces him to nurse David Simms. David takes Cat’s silence in stride, caring for him without pushing and slowly building Cat’s trust.

Outside the hospital, Cat discovers he has more in common with David than he knew, and they begin to build a friendship. As it slowly grows into love, David reveals his own need for someone to take him as he is. Cat begins to let go of his vows one by one, only holding onto the silence.

Despite how far he’s come, Cat’s increasingly severe panic attacks threaten to undo everything David has helped him build. Cat’s only hope is to break the final vow and tell the truth about the night of his attack. When David fails to keep a promise he made to be there for him, Cat has to stand on his own and prove to himself he’s strong enough to survive.

Prequel to Passing on Faith.

Excerpt:

Cat thundered down the stairs, waved over his shoulder in case anyone was looking, and jumped into the car before he could change his mind—both about the meeting and his clothes. Too bad he had the entire drive to second-guess both of those decisions.

The meeting was in a small complex of medical offices. Cat snickered when he saw that one of them was a veterinarian. So the tiny town of Raccoon wasn’t all that different from Concordia, then—treating dogs and people in the same building. He parked and entered the door lettered with Delia Brenner, LCSW; she was the social worker who hosted the group. The outer office was eerily quiet, but he heard voices drifting from the back. He followed the sound, the door closing behind him with a thump. A sign on the inner door read: Ring bell for assistance, so Cat pressed the buzzer and waited.

“Be right there!” a voice called.

A moment later, a man with an open, round face, bright blue eyes, and a head full of long, loose curls peered out. For a moment, he and Cat stood there, staring at each other. It was David, the cute nurse from the hospital. A bolt of nerves shot up Cat’s spine, and he trembled as he unzipped his jacket. David was gay or bi or maybe, like Cat, identified as queer? Cat fiddled with the hem of his shirt, still frozen to the spot.

“Becket?” David’s eyes lit up. “Oh, my god. How are you?”

At Cat’s continued silent staring, David seemed uncertain, but he held out a hand and motioned to Cat. “Come on through. We were just getting started.” He eyed Cat’s shirt and a trace of a smile played on his lips, but he said nothing.

Interview:

What inspired you to write this story?

People kept telling me how much they loved Cat in Passing on Faith, so I wanted to tell his story. But I didn’t want to simply re-tread his romance with Micah from his perspective. This was sparked by a quote in PoF where Cat’s sister says he’s in “shut-down mode” and won’t talk to her. I wondered why not.

Is there a character you feel especially connected to? Why?

To Cat, of course, although he is really only one aspect of my inner self. His questions and mental dialog about his gender mirror my own. But I also feel linked to Cat’s mom, as a parent myself.

What was the hardest part of writing this?

Getting the emotions just right. It is really hard to show the kind of gender dysphoria both Cat and I experience, and I also sometimes find it hard to pour feelings out on the page—as though I’m revealing too much of myself in them.

Tell us a little about any upcoming projects.

I’m working on several things: The next part of my Notes from Boston series; a young adult coming of age novel; and the last part of Cat and Micah’s story, Keeping the Faith. I’m always busy working on something.

Are there any types of scene you find hard to write (action, love, death, etc.)? I seriously hate writing sex scenes! There are only so many ways to describe sex acts, regardless of the focus on emotions and context. When I began writing, I included them as a rebellion against the taboos of my former fundamentalism. Now I’d like to move in the direction of not having them or doing a fade-to-black.

What do you do when you feel stuck (writer’s block)? Listen to music, read a book, hang with my kids, play a game. It helps to clear my head rather than focusing on the stuck feeling.

How do you handle a story that doesn’t go as you planned? I go with it! But I’m a semi-pantser anyway. I only plot so far. My characters often like to mess with me and say I’m telling their stories wrong. I figure they know themselves best.

Word Sprints!

What’s on tap? Box wine—don’t judge
What’s your wake-up routine? Grumble, stretch, and get up to help my kids
Morning person or night owl? Night owl

About Heartifact

Harper Kidd is a highly respected marine archaeologist. Yet, with the economy in a slump, he’s trapped working in an oil company’s exploration division. Now, at the ripe age of thirty, Harp is disgusted with his employer’s damage to the undersea world he loves, tired of his ATM-card-filching ex, and tormented by beautiful dreams of an undersea lover. It’s time for a change and when his best friend, Stick, pleads with him to assist on a deep-sea dig in the Mediterranean, he jumps at the chance.

Harper’s sprits are high when they discover the ruins of an ancient civilization, and soar to the heavens when they discover a statue of an ancient pelora, a mysterious hybrid creature said to mediate between the worlds of reality and fantasy—and the very lover who holds the starring role in his dreams.

When the crew discovers the site is teeming with unexploded ordnance from the conflicts in the Middle East, and the excavation turns deadly, Harper must choose between saving his best friend and saving the pelora he’s fallen in love with.

“I meant to ask you earlier, how’s the music box coming along?” Rother asked.

It was difficult not to groan out loud given my frustration. My mother would have thrown herself into the nearest settee in a dramatic swoon and produced her favorite fan. All the while not touching her back to the cushions. Francinian men didn’t stoop to such histrionics, so I’m told.

Instead, I merely exhaled. “Awful. I’m tempted to dismantle every gear just to punish the contraption. It looks like everything is in place, but it refuses to behave.”

“How ironic.” The smile on his suave face was audible.
