Summer passed England by that year, as if it shared his family’s grief and refused to intrude upon such solemn days with unwanted sunshine. A cool, wet July turned into a blustery August, and now a dismal September loomed. From the window of their rented cottage, there was nothing but gray skies as far as the eye could see. The fields spread out in a patchwork of shortbread and moss. Plentiful rain meant the grass stood tall, but the lack of light filtering through thick, heavy clouds dulled its various shades of green. And this bleak scene was supposed to make everything better?
Oakley sighed and turned to the sink. He poured himself a glass of water from a spluttering, corroded tap and took a sip. Despite the dubious appearance of the fittings, the water was clean, tasteless, and refreshing. He supposed he should at least be thankful for that. It was likely to be the only pleasant thing this vacation would provide.

Asta Idonea (aka Nicki J Markus) was born in England but now lives in Adelaide, South Australia. She has loved both reading and writing from a young age and is also a keen linguist, having studied several foreign languages.
Asta launched her writing career in 2011 and divides her efforts not only between MM and mainstream works but also between traditional and indie publishing. Her works span the genres, from paranormal to historical and from contemporary to fantasy. It just depends what story and which characters spring into her mind!
As a day job, Asta works as a freelance editor and proofreader, and in her spare time she enjoys music, theatre, cinema, photography, and sketching. She also loves history, folklore and mythology, pen-palling, and travel, all of which have provided plenty of inspiration for her writing.

Yes, it’s true. After all this time, Innocence & Carnality is coming to an end. What an amazing journey this has been. I couldn’t wait to share the last chapter after Wednesday’s exciting finale, so I’m posting the end early. I hope you don’t mind. (I didn’t think anyone would be upset.) Over a year and a half has passed since the very first installment of Part One was shared. It’s my longest story to date, and one I’m so very proud of.

Ch. 16
Love was a convoluted subject for me.
In public, my parents used to bandy about polite professions of adoration as was expected during gentile events. Soirees crowded shoulder to shoulder with affluent rivals while being serenaded by what passed as musical geniuses. Holding court while performing the proper dance at the Summer’s Grande Ball. I imagine their wedding was full of noble exultations of courtly praise and binding emotions.
It was a shame I bore witness to their lives in private.

Blythe’s arms relaxed and he slumped. I couldn’t keep his massive bulk from taking us to the floor.
A ton of dead weight crushed me, making it hard to breathe. I panicked enough to forget the real danger I was in, more concerned with Blythe’s welfare. Don’t cry, don’t cry. You’re useless if you cry.
“Blythe! Blythe!” With the lack of air, my shouts were more like whispers. I shook his unmovable shoulder, trying not to succumb to premature grief, but it was difficult. Don’t panic, don’t panic. If he was dead, I no longer cared what came next.

Ch. 14
I’ve seen men die before. In front of me by another man’s hands. Few things steal a part of your innocence so completely, it’s unable to be retrieved. Nightmares filled with blood and screams sometimes wake me at night, even though the dead men deserved their fate. It was either us or them.
So this time I held my eyes closed. It didn’t help. Hiding the sight did nothing but allow my imagination to fill in the gaps, matching the audible horrors with grotesqueries.
I was more creative than I’d realized.

Another night on the arm of Lord Rother Marsh Delaga III bearing witness to another abysmal assembly of customers at Delaga House. I thought after Alvus Martinque’s death, the business couldn’t suffer worse.
I was wrong.
Not half as many guests to ride the carnival of delights crossed our threshold compared to the evening before. The sharp decline was troublesome at best. A year ago I would have applauded the demise of such an establishment.
I shook my head at my evasive description. There’s no shame in calling a thing what it is. Bordello. Much better sounding than whorehouse. Yes, I preferred bordello.

Ch. 12
Rother refused to let the murder of Alvus Martinique affect his business and opened up as expected, two evenings later.
For the first time, I wished I hadn’t dragged my feet on repairing the music box. The tinny melody would have been a godsend to end the eerie quiet.
There weren’t half as many customers in the house as there should have been. It didn’t take much effort to see who was missing. Few to no important or wealthy men graced our establishment. The sparse crowd was composed of random men of minimal social status no matter what their bankrolls might suggest. Gone were the dignitaries who discussed business among their peers while waiting their turn for the fantasy of their choice.
And if I could see this trend, so could Rother. Or at least he should.

Ch. 11
It had been seven days since Rother shipped his edicts to the Chief Magistrate and his solicitor. Only myself, Blythe, and Rother knew of his demands. I couldn’t imagine Samantha taking the news lightly, so I kept my lips tight on the subject. One more item to add to my growing catalog of secrets.
Waiting for the post became a test of nerves each day. Until he’d received confirmation of his plan, Rother haunted the house with a distracted agitation. And the longer it took, the more poignant the effect.
At first I doubted Rother saw the gravity of the situation. Much like my intimate knowledge, my familiarity with the criminal element sat steeped in ignorance. Mr. Avaston had no issue ordering his men into attacking me to make their point. What else was he capable of? Rother’s legal attack might not win the game from such a person. Would Mr. Avaston accept the loss? My biggest fear was Rother would provoke the man into something more drastic. The thought kept me awake at night.

Try as he might, Rother couldn’t hide his impatience, and I’d taken my time in the clockworkist shop knowing he had no interest whatsoever in the place. It wasn’t as if I had to fake my excitement. I loved everything inside and Rother knew it. This was one of my rare excursions outside and I was in my element. I had no intention of rushing myself for Rother of all people. He could learn to be the odd man for a change. No, I could peruse every trinket and gear, and make him suffer with absolute boredom.
I patted the tiny package in my pocket containing the replacement gear for the music box and a few random odds and ends I discovered. “I think so. I have everything I need.”
