Shelved
I finished writing Thorn Queen last night. That's the sequel to Storm Born, continuing the adventures of prophecy-laden shaman Eugenie Markham. It's weird: it often takes me awhile to actually realize how cool it is to write an entire book. I guess with this being my job, I have an inability to see the forest for the trees. I'm always seeing the trees, one chapter at a time--and then it's a bit of a shock when it's done to finally look up and be like, "Whoa, I have a book. 107,000 words of book

Because Audrey is so 1986
Some of you may recall me talking about my on-again off-again romance with gardening. Back when I was married, I had a pretty elaborate collection of flowers at our first house, about 10 or so years ago. It was no small feat either because the subdivision had been built essentially on top of a swamp, giving that area an even greater slug population than most of Western Washington. Nonetheless, I did my best to protect my columbines and day lilies, investing in copper tape and eco-friendly slug r

Find my friends
Just a real quick blurb as things are super busy right now! My author pals Caitlin Kittredge, Cherie Priest, Mark Henry, and Mario Acevedo are out on a road trip tour right now of San Diego, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Portland. I'm a little late in posting this (sorry, Las Vegas fans), but if you go check out this link on Caitlin's site, it'll tell you the dates and locations of their West Coast madness. From there, you should be able to hunt down the bookstores for times if you want to

Snakes on a plane
Xanax is a fascinating drug. When I first discovered doctors would prescribe me medication to help me fly, I immediately wanted some hardcore sedative that would knock me out as soon I sat down so that I could wake up at my destination with no passage of time. Nope. All the doctors said no sedatives for me--only anti-anxiety drugs. I was skeptical. I didn't think there was any drug that would reduce my anxiety enough to make me enjoy flying. And it's true. Xanax doesn't make me happy, but it doe

Lone Star Great
Texas continues to be good to me. Yesterday was a great day of feasting and watching movies in the Caine Household. I've given myself a few days off from writing while I'm here, and I can't even begin to say how good it's been for me. I've been sleeping really well at night, and it's funny how when you aren't stressing for story ideas to come, they start to come on their own.

"The stars at night are big and bright...
...deep in the heart of Texas!"
Fans of Pee-Wee's Big Adventure will know what scene I'm referencing there. Honestly, ever since this whole Texas trip has been in the making, I haven't been able to get that song out of my head.
Today, I set out from my beloved Pacific Northwest to the South Central part of our country, off to the surprisingly balmy Dallas/Ft. Worth metropolitan area. I won't lie: it was a miracle that I made that flight. Whenever I fly, I usually drive to the home of friends who l

Texas signing and other updates
First up, time for a signing reminder! I'll be in Texas this coming weekend, specifically Irving, Texas - which is in the greater Dallas/Ft. Worth area. Here's where to find me:
Valley Ranch Library @ 2pm on Saturday, March 7th
401 Cimarron Trail, Irving, TX
972-721-4669
I'll be talking for an hour about my books and other writing topics, and then there'll be time for some Q&A and book signings if you want to bring any. So, if you live anywhere in that area, I hope you'll come see me this Saturday.

Smart cookie
Big cities often get scary reputations, with some people fearing they'll get assaulted around every corner or alley. Out here in the suburbs of Seattle, no one seems quite as afraid, but you're actually more likely to get accosted here than downtown--but not by scary street thugs.
By Girl Scouts.
Yes, it's that time of year again, the time when groups of girls and their mothers camp outside your favorite grocery store and lure you in with their delicious cookies. I'd gotten a heads-up to Cookie Se

It's a man's world?
It's Tuesday, which is often new release day for authors. Today is no exception, and actually two of my friends have new books out on the shelves--both of whom are rare men in the world of urban fantasy:

If you've read books by Mark Henry or Mario Acevedo before, then you know what you're in for. Both Mark and Mario are the kind of guys who aren't afraid to "go there." Mark's new release, Road Trip of the Living Dead continues the twisted adventures of zombie debutante (or rather, deadutante) A

Do you hear what I hear?
While watching Star Trek: The Voyage Home last night (I don't care what anyone says - I love all things involving Star Trek and time travel), I was subjected to a number of commercials for products intended for a very specific subset of the population. Like, for example, the "high-tech" sunglasses/reading glasses/HD Vision glasses. Or the amazing updo hair twist ties that come with a bonus bedazzler so that you can cover your twists in bling. I was a bit surprised the commercial with Ed McMahon
