Flashing For Fun

Every month over on the Deadline Dames, we hold a Readers on Deadline flash fiction contest. The wonderful Dame Rinda Elliot posts a picture, and readers write a 250 word flash fiction using the photo as inspiration.  The best entry wins free books, ARCs, gift certificates and more!

Last Thursday we switched it up. Three Dames wrote 250 word flash fictions and readers were encouraged to guess which Dame wrote which story. I was one of those Dames!  After almost 70 guesses, we finally had a...

What is an Orycon?

Over on the Deadline Dames I recently talked about how I think conventions can be pretty nifty things and that I will be attending Orycon, my local genre convention, November 11-13 2011.

Not too long after that, mundanename on Twitter asked me:

What is Orycon and what fun things can you do at it?

"Allie Beckstrom" and me at last year's Orycon. Love her sassy pose!

Great question!

I am not affiliated with the convention or those tireless volunteers who keep it running every year.  Being a fairly...

Oh, the Silliness

I like to knit.  I like to knit silly things, nerdy things, geeky things.  I like to knit useful things too.

So I was thrilled when my sister-in-law asked me to knit this silly, useful thing:

What is this, you may ask?  And why is it traffic-cone ow-my-eyes! orange? Here's another look at the front of it:

Sure it's a hat of some sort.  But for what?  Ewoks? Yoda?

Now here's the back of it:

Still not sure how it could be useful?  That's okay.  I had never heard of this sort of thing before asked...

Excerpt Time! MAGIC ON THE LINE

I'm head-down, and hard-working on TIN SWIFT right now.  This book refuses to write any faster than a couple thousand words a day and I am SO behind my word count goals. *insert angry face*

I will finish this book.  I love so much of the story so far, I can't wait to see how it all turns out, but dang, I wish I could break through this methodical pace.  Maybe I need more coffee in my coffee.

In other news, the next Allie Beckstrom book, MAGIC ON THE LINE is set to come out on November 1st! ...

MAGIC ON THE LINE Gets a Star

Wow!  I just received notice that Publisher's Weekly gave MAGIC ON THE LINE a starred review!  Here, let me share it with you:

Publisher's Weekly – Starred review

MAGIC ON THE LINE

Monk's electric seventh Allie Beckstrom urban fantasy (after Apr. 2011's Magic on the Hunt) is the best one yet. With Portland's magical community already in upheaval, local leader Bartholomew Wray decides to completely overhaul the Portland Authority. His plans don't sit well with Allie; her lover, Zayvion; and...

Allie Goes to the UK

As I announced some months ago, the Allie Beckstrom series has been picked up by Berkley UK and shiny new editions will be released soon.

How soon?

MAGIC TO THE BONE comes out October 13th.  That's less than 3 weeks away!

Here is the awesome cover:

This will also be available on the Kindle

I love the tag line, and really like that they used the same model and cover concept but still made it all look fresh and new. What do you think about the cover?*

Here is the US cover for comparison:

And for fun, ...

Earning My Stitches

I finished knitting two sets of fingerless gloves for gifts!

The yarn I used (Cascade 220) is scratchier than I thought it would be, especially worn close to the inside of the wrist.   I've investigated some ways to soften the yarn and had some success.

But I hate to give handmade gifts hat might fall short.

So I decided to knit two new pairs of gloves! Different patterns too!  Yay, more fun knitting!

As soon as I get them done and mailed, I'll  share pictures and patterns. (I don't want to...

Quick List For a Monday

Seasons

It rained last night.  It's been a dry August (we won't talk about May, June, July…or heck the rest of the year that was plenty damp)

It was nice to hear the clatter of drops in the dry grass, smell the summer dust sweeten, and listen to the crickets startle out of their song before piping up again.  I know it isn't officially autumn for a couple more days, but today is the first day that really feels like the season has changed.

I love it.
