Fun Photo Friday on a Saturday — Christmas on the Pecos Favorites
Christmas on the Pecos
It’s Fun Photo Friday time, and this repeat of my 2016 Christmas lighting special. Before you get to the photo gallery, however, here are some particular favorites of mine. The next photograph is a rather abstract reflected light image from our Pecos River voyage:

I particularly enjoy the symmetry of this next reflection shot:

And this next shot would make a great Christmas card, I would think:

Is it worth it for 40 minutes? I think so. In fact, I wouldn’t mind doing this again someday. I know kids will certainly enjoy it....

Christmas on the Pecos — Part 1
25th Anniversary of Christmas on the Pecos
Time for what has become sort of an annual tradition here at the blog — Christmas light photography — but this time with a travel twist. This week I’m going to not only give you five articles, but I’m going to take you to Carlsbad, New Mexico, for a Christmas light boat ride along the Pecos River taken in 2016.

Photographing Outdoor (and Indoor) Christmas Lights
(Following is a repost from December 2012, hence the Mayan calendar reference)
It’s the Christmas season. That means it’s camera time, because you won’t see this much nighttime splashing of color again until July 4, and that’s only if we’re all still around come Mayan dawn on December 21 (remember — those west of the International Dateline get it first).
Taking pictures of Christmas lights requires special care and preparation. Regular readers of my blog know that I don’t usually advocate...

Western Wednesday — Collectible 1973 Ruger Super Bearcat Shooting Review
Ruger Super Bearcat with box, manual, warranty card
It’s time for a Western Wednesday firearm review, and today’s shooting review is on a gun that Ruger made for less than three years (June 1971-January 1974)! I’ve already discussed Ruger’s alloy framed 1st edition Bearcat (see: Interesting Collectables: “Old” 1st issue Ruger Bearcats), in which I presented a rare ‘Alpha Cat’ Bearcat and one of the very first Bearcats (624th off the line) produced with oiled walnut grips rather than the...

SIG Sauer P365 SAS — First Look and a Shooting Review
If you are here for the continuation of my fall foliage cruise series, I’ll be continuing those articles starting December 30. This week, however, I owe my firearms fans some long-promised handgun reviews. And after that I go to two weeks of Christmas-themed reruns.

Today I’ll be giving a first look and shooting review of the SIG Sauer P365 SAS with the Meprolight FT Bullseye sighting system equipped with an innovative tritium-illuminated sight using ...

Fall Foliage Cruise — Prince Edward Island; Touring the Sights
Port Charlottetown
So, to recap, Adventure of the Seas landed at Port Charlottetown on Prince Edward Island on October 10 of this year. From here we, along with some shipmates, were picked up by Cyril Arsenault of Cyril’s Tours and Tales for a wonderful and entertaining excursion into the countryside.

A Fata Morgana — Superior Mirage Optical Illusion
Today I present a bonus blog article on an optical illusion Ursula and I witnessed yesterday morning.
Back in my other life as an air traffic controller working in various Airport Traffic Control Towers (ATCT) over the better part of a 34-year career, I would occasionally be treated to a Fata Morgana. These superior mirage atmospheric optical phenomena most often revealed themselves in the cold months of winter right after sunrise, and usually lasted less than an hour or so on the rare...
