Christians in the Middle East, Jewish and Christian Understanding

Posted from an email I received today.

http://paulfdavis.com/conflict-resolu...

We, the leaders of The Center for Jewish-Christian Understanding, are distressed over the decline of Christians throughout the Middle East. In the last 50 years, the Christian populations in the region have dropped significantly in every country except Israel. This trend has accelerated in the last 10 years.

Christians were once a majority in Lebanon, but today they comprise only 30 percent of all Lebanese. Four out of every five Maronite Christians have left the country. Assyrian Christians have left Iraq in large numbers, and a significant number of Coptic Christians are now leaving Egypt due to religious persecution. In Iran, Christian rights have been curtailed. There are no Christian citizens in Saudi Arabia, and American soldiers and foreign workers are barred from displaying their Christian faith in public. In many Middle East countries, Muslim conversion to Christianity is a capital offense.

In the Palestinian territories (the West Bank and Gaza), Christians are declining dramatically. Bethlehem was always a Christian city. When Israel ceded authority of Bethlehem to the Palestinian Authority in 1995, it was more than 60% Christian. Today it is less than 20% Christian. Many Christians having the means to leave are doing so. Ramallah too was once a Christian city, but today it has less than 7,000 Christians out of a total population of 25,500. There are only 3,000 Christians left in Gaza out of 1.5 million people, and more than 2,000 Christians have left Gaza since Hamas took control two years ago.

Christians suffer from housing shortages in Jerusalem, as well as occasional discrimination and hostile behavior from Israelis. The Israeli government needs to work to ensure that these problems are solved for Israel to live up to its ideals of a democracy committed to protecting the rights of all its citizens independent of race or religion. Yet the Christian population of Israel continues to grow. There are approximately 120,000 Arab Christians and 30,000 non-Arab Christians citizens of Israel today, compared to 35,000-40,000 Christians when Israel was founded in 1948—nearly a 400% increase.

In Jerusalem, Christians numbered 30,000 when Jordan conquered the ancient city in 1948. That number dwindled to 10,000 by the time Israel retook control in 1967. Today the number of Christians in Israeli Jerusalem is up to 15,000 but is again decreasing.

So in the Holy Land, there are two different and opposite phenomena at work: A decline of Christians in Palestinian territories, and an increase of Christian population in Israel.

The CJCUC is committed to Jewish-Christian harmony and the welfare of all people in the Middle East, particularly the Jewish and Christian minorities of the region. Their security and religious freedom are fundamental historic, democratic and religious rights, and their continued presence is important to prevent the Middle East from becoming an intolerant totalitarian region.

In light of the difficult plight of Christians throughout the Middle East, it calls on all people to work for Middle East peace and the security and rights of Christians in the region.

Where is God? Where are you? Key to Your Next Breakthrough

Instead of asking God to do what He told you to do; get off your backside, stand upright and move forward. Jesus said, "It is finished" and sat down (Mark 16:19). Now it is time for you to stand up!

Getting Over Anger and Disappointment to Live Large as an Overcomer

Getting over anger and disappointment is more easily said than done.

Often our frustration is with people who we put unrealistic expectations upon and thereafter expect God to fix everything with a magic wand (which big Daddy in the sky easily can and could), but since the Creator graciously gives human beings freedom of choice, He often does not interfere or intervene in a manipulative fashion to answer our prayers concerning people, preferring rather to alter our mindset and attitude within so we can rise above our present struggles, love unconditionally like our heavenly Father and be overcomers able to comfort others suffering in similar fashion.

TV and Kids: What is Appropriate for Each Age?

Based on the formative development of each child, the morals you are trying to impart, the path you are trying to direct and predetermine; you will intuitively know what is appropriate for him or her to watch. Trust your parental instincts.

God of the Jews and Christians: Reconciling Faith and Differing Religious Views

When a mother recently asked how to teach her son about God when she is Jewish and her husband is Christian, I replied saying the following.

The good news is Jesus Christ was a Jew, as were His apostles and the majority of His disciples during His earthly ministry.

Beginning and building upon your Judeo-Christian values is a great place to start. Even the apostle Paul (whose ministry was primarily to the Gentiles) acknowledged the Judaic roots from which Christianity originates and is to this day upheld (read chapter Romans 11 in the Bible).

I journeyed to Israel, the land of the Bible, for the first time last year and enjoyed it thoroughly. There are many wonderful spiritual tours you can take concerning the ministry of Christ and thereby simultaneously connect with both your Jewish and Christian roots.

Jesus Himself strictly kept and adhered to the law of Moses, fulfilling it entirely. The difference is the Judaic law is a shadow of the substance of better things promised by the Jewish prophets in Christ.

God spoke through the Jewish prophet Ezekiel saying, "A new heart will I give you, and a new spirit I will put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you a heart of flesh. And I will put My Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and you shall keep my judgments and do them" (Ezekiel 36:26-27).

Christ was a child of the Holy Spirit (Matthew 1:18), born of the virgin Mary as foretold by the Jewish prophets. Christ came not to fight and wrestle over religion and the many rules that man-made religionists impose upon people, but rather to bring about a spiritual new birth within the heart of mankind (John 3:1-17) and thereby build a spiritual kingdom (Luke 17:20-21; Romans 14:17) to bring heaven to earth.

Therefore the letter of religion kills, but the Spirit and heart of the Creator imparts love, life and liberty (see 2Corinthians 3:6).

Transcend religion and tradition to taste and see for yourself that God is good!

Religion can be boring and constraining, whereas the Creator is always fun, loving, liberating and life-giving.

You will best learn and teach your son (and yourself) theology, as you happily travel together to explore your world, have fun experientially and rejoice in the Creator and creation making new discoveries daily.

Gulf oil spill: Obama's regulatory response falls short

It's Sunday and I am kissing my lovely Canadian wife and thanking God for my geographical options for clean water should BP pollute the entire Gulf and Atlantic Ocean.

As a Floridian I am disgusted with what the U.S. government has allowed big oil companies to do to our precious natural resources, environment and country.

Since the MMS can't be trusted to do an independent environmental analysis, that task should be assigned to an agency with an environmental protection mission, such as the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration or the Environmental Protection Agency (with an accompanying bud...get transfer). http://www.progressivereform.org/arti...
