The Reading (Wish) List

What’s next on my reading list? I don’t know. Don’t get me wrong, I have plenty of books in the wish list of my audible account. With the introduction to audiobooks I’m able to enjoy books again since free time is a little lacking around the Power household. Plus, when I do have time to not do anything that is exactly what I want to do. With audible, like you, my drive time is filled with whatever book I’m working on at the time. Sometimes I’m able to listen while at work depending on the wor...

“Where It Goes” the blog

Years ago, a friend (Brett) and I wrote letters to each other on a regular basis. We liked the idea of having a physical copy of who we were at that time years later. We utilized manual typewriters that we still own, but now collect dust. I still have the letters he wrote to me and I’m sure he has mine as well. The practice went on for a couple of years until it finally faded away. Recently, he posed the idea of the two of us writing a blog together and I thought it was a good idea. Below is...

Setting up the Antagonist

evil-characterSo Fez, your main character that you’ve spent so much time in making a viable person, is developed. Now what? At this point you have your story idea coming together. You know what is supposed to happen, you know how it is supposed to end (maybe), and you’ve probably come up with a few more characters on the way.

Fez needs to interact with someone. These people could be side characters, the antagonist, whatever. Let’s focus on the antagonist, the bad guy, the asshole causing all the problems f...

Setting up the Main Character: Part 2

CharacterSo you have all this information either in outline, or paragraph, or full out character profile with pages of information about Fez, our main character. It’s exhausting. It feels pointless at times, and it is in some respects. Now put all that info away and forget about it. If you want to trash it, then do so, but get it out of the way.

Let’s say you have your idea for a story worked out, you have an outline, or something in your head about what your story is about, where it will go, and all...

Setting up the Main Character

In an attempt to add some content to the blog I’ve decided to write down a few ways I write. It’s not a “how to” type of post, but more of a “how I do it.” Any mentions of you, Characterdoesn’t necessarily mean “you.” It’s more like I’m talking to myself, pointing at my reflections saying “you” while reminding myself of the little things I do when coming up with a character.

The first thing I normally do is come up with some sort of idea for a story. This is one of those things where the writer can ne...

My year in preview.

12075075_191699751172239_5321089671272926714_nI honestly did want to write a “Year in review” type of post, but with all the excuses I could give I didn’t. I did get shit done (for lack of a better term), and I’m proud of what I was able to accomplish. There were several short stories/flash fiction things I posted on the blog. I put a couple of chapters of my book, “The Price of Favors,” online and managed to find some beta readers for it. I also wrote a whole new project thanks to NaNoWriMo. All of this happened while life did it’s best...

NaNoWriMo and Beyond.

12075075_191699751172239_5321089671272926714_nSo NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) has ended, and yes I participated. I did, unfortunately, not reach the goal. A vacation involving Mickey Mouse and a cruise, kind of got in the way, but despite that hurdle I was able to reach 43K by the end of the month. Regardless of whether or not I won or not it was an experience I am proud of and only hope that the feverish banging away at the keyboard will persist into some sort of regular habit. A writer writes, right?

So what did I learn? I...

Waiting and waiting and waiting

Screen Shot 2015-10-23 at 9.20.47 AMWith NaNoWriMo approaching, I’m finding it difficult waiting for the green light (November 1) to get started on my project. I’ve tried to keep myself busy with the outline I’m working on, but I really want to sink my teeth into the pounding out content. I’m not one to spend this much time on an outline since I mainly use it as a guide to certain things I want the story to hit on, or key plot points.

Another problem I have is I currently have two outlines for two different stories I would like...
