So many books....

As a reader, I think it's vital to read, and I do, many, many titles. Here are only a few of those I've enjoyed this year (in no particular order).

Evil Never Dies: The Spider - Book 2 Kindle Edition

https://books2read.com/u/me75Dr

description

I enjoyed book one The Spider, so I knew this follow-up would be just as good.

My review:

I'd read book one of The Spider so knew this would be another good read - I wasn't disappointed.

This story is a mix of reality, relationships and human behaviour, with a thread of the chilling paranormal. Because of the former, the latter seems more real, thus making it even more chilling.

This author has the knack of delving into what people do and the mess they can make of their lives, and the tangled web cleverly demonstrates this.

Talking of webs, there is, of course, the paranormal aspect to the tale, where evil is exposed - no spoilers. I will just say that perhaps lessons are learned, or not.

It's well-written with a dramatic atmosphere, stark reality alongside the creepy. As for the additional graphics...shudder.

***

I also discovered some new authors, Michael Robertson being one. I have read just about all of his work now, but my favourite series was Beyond These Walls; a post-apocalyptic story.

Here is the box set of the first six (although, I have read the whole series) -

description

https://books2read.com/u/bOXlwK

My review:

I have reviewed each story separately, so will just say the first six books are excellent reads from page one.

With well-developed characters, a great sense of place and world-building, in addition to a brilliant plot, all indeed make for a page-turner.

I liked the writing style (except for the break in flow with Oxford commas in lists and 'me either' instead of 'me neither). I was surprised that a British author would make the American error, especially with the latter. There were a couple of typos but nothing major. The rest, though, was superb.

However, I thoroughly enjoyed all the parts - the good and the evil; each a perfect foil for the other.

Highly recommended.

***

T. C. Edge
Children Of The Prime box set

description

https://books2read.com/u/47lLw7

My review:

This is an excellent series and though I have reviewed each story separately, I will just say that overall, each story develops characters, plot and world-building brilliantly.

There are typos and grammatical errors, however, the writing style is swift and flows extremely well. Plenty of action mixes with thoughts and feelings, bringing depth and reality to each story.

Entertaining, enjoyable and highly recommended.

***

Iain Rob Wright

I managed to receive some freebies from this author and all six I've read so far are thought-provoking for sure (and one has actually been banned). However, my favourite so far is 12 Steps because it really honed in on human behaviour and was realistic.

description

https://books2read.com/u/4A7XMJ

My review:

I was given this book and I thought it was a great suspense story - not what I had expected and that's always good in my experience.

It's an AA meeting and yet...

Believable characters, a twisty plot and good writing made for a compelling read. One annoyance was the use of the phrase 'off of' instead of 'from' or just 'off' - this did surprise me because the author is British and it's usually Americans that use this poor wordage.

However, this tale was cleverly done and entertaining.

Recommended.

***

Katy Huth Jones has long been a favourite author of mine and I've recently managed to continue reading the He Who Finds Mercy series, which continues to a second series Mercy's Children.

Although, I'm not a believer in any god, I've really enjoyed this fantasy series (I'm currently reading Dolan's Bride), despite the references to the Most High. It's very well done and I've loved every story.

Here is the first in the series -

description

https://books2read.com/u/38RAlZ

My review:

A truly wonderful tale filled with enchantment, battles and dragons.

Being the second son, Prince Valerian thinks his life is set, but things are about to change.

Mercy, a young girl from the Brethren is also changed by shocking events.

That's it, as I don't give spoilers. However, I will say that this well-written fantasy had me hooked from the beginning keeping my interest until the end. It has all the ingredients a reader enjoys with themes such as good v evil, love, intrigue and mystery.

The characters are believable - both good and bad - and develop well throughout the story. It will be interesting to see how things move on in book two - yes, that is my next read.

Overall, great storytelling.

Enjoyable and highly recommended.

***

Paul Teague - the author's name for his fantasy books. Paul J. Teague for his crime thrillers. Both genres are very well done.

The Complete Sci-Fi Collection
description

https://books2read.com/u/3GAlJr

The Complete Thriller Collection
description

https://books2read.com/u/31Yn96

I have reviewed each book and box set separately. Certainly recommended reads.

***

Edward W. Robertson

I've read many of this author's work but my favourite is the Breakers series - the first book is free, though be warned, you will probably want to continue.

description

https://books2read.com/u/4NXlVo

My review:

This was a well written story about a plague that sweeps the world...but there's more.

The characters were developed and interesting, and the two storylines fitted the whole extremely well. I enjoyed the humour of the dialogue, especially between Raymond and Mia, and Walt's caustic way of thinking.

There were plenty of unanswered questions - possibly resolved in the following books?

Overall, an enjoyable, entertaining and thought-provoking story.

Highly recommended.

***

Well, that's it for now. Of course, there are hundreds more books that I've enjoyed but time is against me in this post.

Maybe you will enjoy these stories as much as I have.

Happy New Year

Meanwhile, here is the first scene from In the Double Agent's Service!

Pain.

Cold.

The smell of dry dirt.

A hard, gritty surface beneath his cheek.

Erik mentally catalogued the sensations in order of their intensity. He opened his eyes, blinked, and added another to the list.

Darkness.

Where am I? He struggled to sit up, and his pulse spiked at the realization that he couldn’t use his hands or feet. His ankles were bound together, and his wrists were tied behind his back.

What’s going on? Erik forced himself to a sitting position, noting the dirt floor beneath him, a rough wall at his back. Brushing his fingers over what he could reach of it, he discovered that the wall seemed to be made of the same hard-packed earth as the floor.

Am I underground? Though not completely smooth, the surfaces were too flat to be natural. Not a cave, then, but perhaps a cellar of some sort.

Or a cell.

He held his breath, straining his ears for any sound in the darkness. “Hello?” he whispered.

There was no response.

“Hello?” he said, a little louder. The acoustics hinted that he was in a small room. His head, already sore, throbbed anew at the sound of his own voice.

Erik leaned against the wall behind him, trying to keep calm. What happened? And where’s Jaymin?

Jaymin. Erik’s pulse started racing again. Had something happened to Jaymin?

Calm down, he ordered himself. He couldn’t afford to give in to panic. Instead, he would investigate his surroundings. Perhaps Jaymin was lying unconscious nearby.

Erik struggled to his feet and promptly smacked his head on a low ceiling. Dropping to his knees with a grunt of pain, he drew in a deep breath while a wave of dizziness rolled over him. When it passed, he shifted to a sitting position, bound legs in front of him. Moving slowly because every movement set his head throbbing, he began to crawl crab-like on his backside, feet, and hands. Keeping one shoulder against the wall, he scooted forward.

It didn’t take long to discover he was in a circular room, the walls curving back around toward where he had started. After eight steps, if he could call them that, his toes bumped something hard. Feeling with his feet, he discovered a stair in front of him, perhaps eight inches high. Shifting his weight, he leaned forward and took a little crouching jump into it. Another stair lay above it, and another. When he jumped onto the third stair, he winced as his injured head bumped the ceiling again.

Craning his neck and brushing an uninjured part of his forehead lightly back and forth against it, Erik discovered that the ceiling was made of wooden boards. Ducking lower with every hop so as not to bump it again, he made his way up the rest of the stairs until they ended at the wall. Twisting around, he hunched over awkwardly and ran his elbow back and forth across the low ceiling. As he had expected, a rectangular trapdoor lay just above him. He could feel the seams where its edges didn’t quite meet the surrounding boards. The hinges must be on the other side, but he thought he could detect a keyhole at one end. Nothing happened when he pushed up against the door with one shoulder, not that he had expected it to open for him.

Descending the steps again, Erik felt his way around the rest of the room. Eleven shuffling steps took him all the way around its circumference and back to the stairs. Criss-crossing the middle several times, he discovered it was completely empty.

If Jaymin wasn’t in here, where was he? Erik sat down and leaned against the wall, his head pounding from the exertion. Bending to brush it gently against his raised knees, he could feel a lump on his right temple. In addition, his upper lip was swollen and tasted like blood. It felt as though he had some bruises on his arms and torso, as well.

Erik closed his eyes — not that it made any difference in the complete darkness that surrounded him — and strained to recall what had happened. Had he and Jaymin been on a trip? He thought he remembered something about embarking on a journey. Where were they going? Was there an ambush? What happened to the palace guards who always accompanied the royal carriage?

Surely Jaymin couldn’t be dead. No one would kill the king but take his bodyguard captive. Would they?

And why would anyone take a bodyguard captive in the first place?

About the Author

A fifth-grade teacher in her “other” life, she loves reading to her students and sparking their imaginations. Her books include science fiction , fantasy , YA action and adventure novels , a puppet script , anthologies of her students’ poetry , Bible verse coloring and activity books , and a fantasy-themed cookbook . My review:

Before this was released I was given an ARC and I found it to be enjoyable.

There are familiar characters from the other books in the series, and this time was mainly centred on Erik's life. He is a likeable character, though is realistic with flaws just like any of us.

The relationship between Erik and Anya is complicated but nicely done.

There were baddies and goodies and those in between. Plenty of action drove the story, and together with the thoughts and feelings, it made for a compelling read.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story despite it being for a younger readership, with important lessons to be learned.

Recommended.

Taster:

I just knew that someone – or something – was watching me. I’d been feeling it for days. And it wasn’t Caladrius, though sometimes he’d stare at me for what felt like hours, those unblinking eyes of his gazing right into my soul.

I wince at the thought of souls – all that nonsense that had assaulted me not that long ago; but how was I really to know how much time had passed? For here I was, stuck in EverVale, the Realm of the Fae, in a mountain cave in the Towell Mountains. Left here by Clara who’d swapped places with her familiar, Caladrius, for a while and…oh, there’s no point in going into all that now.

Something was watching!

I’d been asleep, and I wondered if my fears within the nightmare had been freed into this reality.
Well, of course, if you’ve been reading my missives, then you’d understand all about what can or cannot be real and, I suppose, most things can be; dependent upon your perspective.

But no, I believed that the creature from my dream was not the one that had been stalking me – something that had woken me and brought sweat to the palms of my hands.

I dared a peek from under my lids, my pretence at sleep hopefully a good ruse, while at the same time attempting to keep my mind clear, for as I’d been taught, my thoughts could leak and be used against me.

I wondered if it could be one of the natives of the mountains. Flix had warned me about all manner of inhabitants, although, so far, none had tried to enter the cave – this magical cave that I’m not entirely sure is real at all. Was it all some great illusion? Did it matter? I was here, so it was real at this moment and had been for some time.

I saw movement – merely a shadow – there it was again!

Careful not to breathe out my fright, I waited, my slippery right hand feeling for the handle of the axe that I’d begun to keep near as if a comforting teddy for a child.

Mewling! Yes, a definite mewling sound, like a helpless kitten, but surely I wasn’t to be fooled. It could be anything out there; the noise a trick to soften my senses.

But it was a sound of hurt and not hunger – hunger for me?

Grasping the axe, I sighed and opened my eyes – I was sick of these games. I had been given a mission, a weird one yes, but I’d accepted the challenge and I couldn’t give in at the first real sign of danger; if it was a danger?

I threw aside the covers and rose from the bed and clamped on my boots – much easier than it had been a while ago, I admit, for my stay in EverVale had forced me to shed some pounds and tone my muscles...and no, I would never be Atlas or Adonis, so you can stop snickering. My belly still had that rotund – if lesser – mound and I haven’t suddenly discarded twenty years. I am still grey-haired and, well, me, although, I have not lost any more height since my return from the dead – only that inch – so I didn’t think I would be shrinking to the size of a Munchkin.

Stepping over to the exit – which was also the entrance to the outer mountain slopes – I pulled aside the heavy curtain and faced the coming dawn.
There it was again; that mewling. Something was hurt. Had it always been hurt and had sought comfort from me, or had it been a recent thing? Had its mission been to eat me until it’d fallen or...? What was the point of thinking like this?

Hooking the curtain onto the jut of rock, I stepped outside and was surprised by the chill in the wind. Though it wasn’t as if the mountains could ever be a summer destination, it hadn’t had that easterly bite for a while.

Was this the sign for which I’d been waiting?
Caladrius made me jump with his sudden squawk as he landed upon my shoulder. “Oh, awake, are you? I’m always surprised about your habits, sleeping being just one.”

“It’s not sleep in human terms, more like a state of hibernation so to...”

“Realign the powers to Clara, yes, you’ve told me. How is she?”

For an answer, the bird merely pecked at one of the pure white feathers that were covered in a spectral glow.

I tutted, but knew that getting angry would do me no good – Caladrius would communicate if and when necessary...or when he felt like it. Although, his silence probably meant that Clara, my beautiful wife, must have been busy with the other part of the quandary. I briefly wondered how she was doing regarding Brett and all that other business with the Queen of the Dead – had Clara been successful with the Chinese Fox idea?

Caladrius stopped preening at that sound. “Yes, it’s a sign of distress, but do you think it may be a trick?” I asked.

As Clara’s familiar, Caladrius was able to do many things such as heal, as that’d been a bonus after my practising through the bowls – I did say that I’d become fitter, if not ready for any body-building competition. But it’d cost me many a sleepless night due to the pain and without a touch of healing, I could have contracted many infections – not that I was sure of anything.

Bewitching enemies is another gift, if not always successful, and as he took flight, I knew he was checking out the source of the noise.

Not that either of us had spied whatever it was before, and the stalking had been going on for a while. Whatever it was, must have a gift of being able to hide.

Within moments, Caladrius flew back onto my shoulder and said, “Follow me!” Then flew off again.

What else could I do?

I should have donned my jacket, as I wound my way around this shelf on the mountain, but it was too late to turn back and was glad I’d decided to be fully clothed even in sleep...just in case. I was eager to find out what it could be and then...

Oh my, it was a shocking sight, both shadow and light folding in and out of each other – I could hardly tell what it was.

“It’s an Elemental of sorts, but it’s been manipulated,” stated Caladrius, back on my shoulder again.

I’m sure he was correct because there before us was an ever-changing mesh of light and dark and yet in between I could spot a shape; however, even that changed. Sometimes a dragon, if small, then a cat and then, well, I wasn’t sure exactly what, but it was its cry that squeezed my heart. For good or ill, I knew I had to help it.

I took a step closer and saw a brief glimpse of an eye the colour of amber and a name jumped into my mind – Aveus.

Caladrius must have had the same thought because he squawked and said, “It’s a Time Elemental, somebody has used a soul stone and caused a line of chaos.”

“Chaos itself, do you think?”

“That’s not clear, but the only way to help...Aveus...is to break the tie.”

“And how would I do that?” I asked taking another step closer to the suffering creature.

I don’t think anyone would have guessed what the next words would be but I was both shocked and yet not surprised at them – the oddities in my life had smoothed the way to the strangest of things.
Have you guessed? Well, I had to jump into the creature, search out the malignancy and destroy it.

Oh dear.

The King of Malorn by Annie Douglass Lima

Another great story from the Annals of Alasia!

description

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/4...

I was given an ARC of The King of Malorn (The Annals of Alasia #5) and because I'd read the others in the series, I knew I would enjoy it - of course, I did.

The story is a YA fantasy adventure with plenty of action and twists and turns. The characters are well-developed; the greatest change being Kalendria...spoilt princess to - well, you'll have to read it to find out.

There is a wonderful sense of place and I was once again immersed in this incredible world.

The two kings are different yet similar in many ways, each with honour to do the right thing. Erik, the bodyguard is complex and I cannot help feeling sympathy for him, although his sense of honour is in-built.

The villains are just perfect for the story and it was entertaining to watch as events unfolded.

Overall, this is an excellent fantasy, with lessons to learn and principles to understand.

I loved it and highly recommend the whole series.

Changing Angels

My new novel, Changing Angels has been on the back burner for quite some time now. I'd thought of the idea at least two years ago and even started writing it, however, after a few chapters, other things came up - especially in dreams - and I had to write those first.

Nevertheless, the characters continued to nag me and so Changing Angels has finally been written.

The idea for it was sparked by truth and although I allowed imagination to take over (not withstanding the decisions made by the characters), so it turned into a mixed genre - romance, drama, crime thriller and, of course, some fantasy... not many stories of mine are without that.

So then, Changing Angels is here and I hope you'll like it.

Universal Link: mybook.to/changingangels

Paperback Link: https://goo.gl/37LVbo

description

I enjoyed designing the cover - hope you like that, too.

Blurb:

Jake’s life is not an easy one; he knew he was lucky to be alive. Faith had always been afraid of monsters, but her father’s words vanquished them with words of love and angels.

Their lives were separate and vastly different and yet something was pulling them closer together.

Then tragedy struck and Faith’s life took a massive swerve. While Jake pondered on what would happen next in his troubled existence.

This story is rooted in truth, although, through dramatic licence, takes a leap into the unknown.

This is a mixed genre tale: romance, drama, crime thriller, with a touch of fantasy.

Warning: contains some strong language and violent scenes.

And...it's only 99p! Bit of marketing there. Well, you know I'm no good at that side of things.

Oh, yes, if you spot any gremlins (those embarrassing typos) I'm sorry and please let me know. I do my very best to be professional, but I do everything myself, and sometimes, my brain can slide over those little horrors and miss them.

Thanks so much for your support.
