Book Recommendations Welcome
A friend and I are onto our second book in our long distance book club. I live in a very rural area of the Upper Midwest while she lives in a large metropolitan area of the Deep South.
We decided last month that enough was enough. Neither of us was getting enough non-work, non-technical reading done. Life was getting stale. I had read how reading a novel can actually change the brain for the better and the effect stays for days after reading a work of fiction.
So we decided to support each other by having a book club--we read a book, then set a time to call each other and discuss it. Of course, after our book discussion we had a very long conversation about "stuff." In all it was an extremely positive thing for both of us. I'm finding my writing fresher as well.
We are now looking for some more books: we both enjoy historical drama fiction with female leads and we also enjoy the "free" Kindle books we can get from Amazon prime.
Any recommendations out there? WW II era reads are preferable but open to others.
Thanks in advance!

Did You Know?
Did you know you can read the first three chapters of my young adult fantasy book The Telling Mirror as a free preview on Amazon? Go to the kindle page, click on look inside and read away!
The same is true for my suspense-mystery book Inedible; the first three chapters on there to preview on the kindle page. Click on the book cover and you, too, can read away on that book!
It is a great feature. A free browse to see if the books catch your eye. If you enjoy either genre I'm sure you'll enjoy the books. Not that bad of a price either!

Legacy and Redemption

My rating: 5 of 5 stars
George Norris does it again with his follow up to Exceptional Merit. Rookie police officer Tim Keegan has big shoes to fill; those of his deceased father Lt. James Keegan, hero cop. Together with his partner and training officer, Tom Galvin, they manage to thwart a catastrophe in the making when they take out a suicide bomber with an over riding hatred to take out the son of the man who had him imprisoned: Tim Keegan. It's nonstop action to foil the bad guys before they are able to fulfill their hateful mission to suicide bomb across the USA during the holiday season.

Great review
I was working on some Amazon Author Central issues and found this previously unread Amazon review of my book Inedible. If you haven't read it it is still only a measly 99 cents on Kindle!

M G Nelson is a pleasure to read! March 27, 2015
Wow. This was an unexpected pleasure!. Reading Inedible was a surprise of fantastic writing, excellent character structure, massive detail (I can't imagine the research that went into this!) and intriguing plot. This book flowed perfectly, I love how the author writes with such succinct accuracy, nailing emotion as we follow Jessica through her job at the meat packing plant, and body language as each character is introduced. The story of a Vet in a meat plant didn't sound all that intriguing at first, but after page one I couldn't put it down. I related to Jessica and her frustration in having to deal with belligerent and uncooperative co-workers. Then I felt her fear and angst as she had to struggle with tough choices, knowing she was putting herself in danger by standing against 'the man'. This was not just a great story (Erin Brockovich came to mind) but expertly written, I never once got bored or felt something went unanswered. Quite a tale! I will look at all my meat in a different light from here on out!

Second Try-Inedible for Kindle at .99
Wow. I had some time today to do some of my bookish things and figured out in the process of updating my Kindle Cover for Inedible I didn't finish proofing the book. A redundant task but it still took the book off-line.
Sigh.
Well it is back on-line and still at the marvelous price of .99 for the Kindle version.
I promise!

Second novel
I had planned to start on another YA novel for my second fiction book. However, about two weeks ago I was in a local shop and stumbled across a book by a local author called First Year. I actually didn't buy it (nor did I pilfer it) but rather we traded books. He got a copy of my suspense novel Inedible in trade.
I started his book last night. So far a good read about a teacher's first year of teaching and the people he encounters.
In keeping with the title of this post I worked a little today on fleshing out the second novel to follow up on The Telling Mirror. Had some excellent thoughts on it so getting excited to etch out the time to get cracking on it!
Hope your reading is going well.

September reading challenge
It's back to school time here in the Upper Midwest. While I'm certainly NOT going back to school, I thought September 1 would be a great time for my personal reading challenge.
This month, I plan to spend 2 hours a day that I would have otherwise wasted watching TV or aimlessly messing around on social media to get caught up on my reading. Anyone care to join me? I'm starting with The Red Pyramid
I read somewhere this summer that reading a novel stimulates the old noggin for a few days after reading it. I hope to get the old grey matter churning as I want to start on my second novels.
Both books "Inedible" and "The Telling Mirror" are begging for their follow-up/series books. Come late fall, I'll have the time to dive into these books, when the farm and yard work are done for the season.

Late summer reading
I don't know about you, but late summer finds me taking a bit more time to relax, read a few good books and enjoy the waning days of summer.
I live on a small farm in Minnesota so I'm almost (but really never) caught up on farm work. Calves are growing well out in the pasture and the chickens are providing me with plenty of eggs.
I'm currently reading the book "Tesla's Attic" a fun children's fantasy book part of the Accelerati trilogy by Neal Shusterman and Eric Elfman. Tesla's Attic
My reading, much like my writing, is electic but I do like children/young adult fantasy (probably because it's good, clean fun) and adult suspense/thrillers.
Speaking of suspense/thrillers (segue intended) I am working on something with my novel "Inedible." I hope to post an exciting update soon.Inedible
Until then all my best,
M.G.
