Pets

In my book InedibleI feature my pets Gary, Harley and Puffy. While Gary and Harley have gone on from this world, Puffy is still going strong.

In addition to helping me write my book, she loves to help me make my bed. This morning I managed to capture her in the act. Enjoy!

Every Writer's Dream

I read today via a Twitter feed about Shea Serrano , a current staff writer for ESPN's Grantland, who released his debut book The Rap Year Book: The Most Important Rap Song From Every Year Since 1979, Discussed, Debated, and Deconstructed

His vast Twitter following, from his prompting, pre-ordered his book to the point it sold out on Amazon and Barnes & Nobles less than a week after its release.

That's probably every writer's dream: to create a pre-release flutter to the point the book sells out!

I had a taste of that this winter. I pre-ordered The South Dakota's Historical Society's book Pioneer Girl: The Annotated Autobiography and as of 9 months later I'm still waiting for it to be delivered.

I'm glad to see that there is still excitement and buzz about books to the extent that first printings run out quickly.

Chicken Tales

In this latest book bubble http://bit.ly/1RcHLjD I discuss the fairy tale I based the character in this chapter on. Always fun weaving together a story and adding my own special twists!

Country Churches

In my most recent insight on https://www.bublish.com/bubble/stream... I discussed the model for an excerpt of my book Inedible my childhood country church.

I thought other readers might enjoy the insight so here it is!

"The country church…ah, the sweet memories of potlucks in the church basement. As I depicted in this excerpt the church ladies—we called their groups circles—could put on a feast. Man, as a sweet food foodie my mouth watered at the deserts. My smell memory of the great food—and egg coffee although I don’t like coffee—brings a smile to my face.

Sadly the little country church that served as the model for the church in Inedible is being torn down. Eidskog church—so named by the Scandinavian immigrants that founded the church in the late 1800’s—fell victim to the times. Sparse rural populations and farms consolidation led to a too small church membership to keep the congregation and church viable.

My understanding is that the large stained glass window described in Inedible will live on though in the local communities new—and badly needed—senior living complex’s chapel.

A small chapel will be built in the peaceful cemetery associated with Eidskog church using a few of the building materials from the church. That will be a nice addition to families (mine included) with loved ones buried there so despite the old church being gone there will be a smaller gathering spot."

New Month, New Novels

Call me crazy--you'll be joining the crowd--but I'm diving into the deep end with starting this month by working simultaneously on two novels. Both are follow-ups to my first two novels and will be books six and seven respectively that I will have written.

The first is the follow up to Inedible which has the tentative name of Dakota Darkness. Dr. Jessica Bergstrom has left the mad house world of meat packing to seek a quiet, routine job as an associate veterinarian a veterinary clinic in rural South Dakota in a town besieged by a drug cartel.

Of course, being a suspense-mystery book, things don't go smoothly for our heroine.Jessica's bad luck leads her to investigate why local dogs are dropping dead from a deadly toxic which she traces to meth manufacturing. She squares off against some deadly drug dealers who don't let any cop, much less some nosy veterinarian, stop their trade and their iron clad grip on the town.

The second novel is the prequel to The Telling Mirror and traces how Sig's father came to abandon the family and ends up in Grimeke. This isn't as fully developed as Dakota Darkness but I'll certainly have fun fleshing it out!

Last Day

Today is the last day of my personal reading challenge to spend a couple of hours a night reading novels and some non-fiction books.

Its been a great thirty days! I've managed to read 2 non-fiction and 4 fiction books. And I inspired a friend to start reading for fun again as well. This is something I'm going to definitely continue.

After veterinary college and work started in earnest I fell out of my lifelong hobby of voraciously reading. This felt good to start up again and I can tell it's improving my writing career as well.

To end the month I'm reading a third book The Blue Executionsfrom an author I met through Goodreads, George P. Norris. He's a great police thriller author. I can highly recommend his books.

Here's to the end of a great month reading and to the start of another great month of reading!
