Daily Herald: gay marriage, religion, politics and cilantro

Disclaimer: When writing about sensitive subjects, I pray more fervently so that the reader will feel the spirit I intend. This column was preceded by much prayer.

Gay marriage, religion, politics and cilantro have one thing in common; they each stir up strong feelings.

Cilantro attracts polarizing opinions. Non-scientific surveys show people either love this herb or hate it. There seems to be an obvious lack of lukewarm feelings about cilantro. Differing flavor preferences don’t keep us from having Mexican dinners together, though. We make allowances for each person’s food preferences. Simply and respectfully, agreeing to disagree about food is easy.

Relationships become much more challenging, however, when differences touch on more emotionally charged areas. Politics, religion, climate change and gay marriage can become walls between loved ones. Read the rest of the article….

Daily Herald: Without a job and still smiling?

It was a typical Monday morning eight weeks ago. Paid some bills and bought new tires for the car. Then I had a thought. It went something like, “Wow, we are finally out of our financial hole.” Three years earlier my husband had been laid off. Then he was diagnosed with cancer and our dog was tragically killed. Country songs are composed with such stories. Feelings of gratitude overwhelmed our family when we finally had a new job. Surviving a chapter of unemployment felt like a badge of honor. Our family had learned valuable lessons, we were better for it and so we checked that experience off our “bucket list,” so to speak. Then came the stages of under-employment and a slow financial recovery. But it did come.

We were finally financially above water on the day a call came from my husband saying he was coming home early on a Monday.struggles are teachers

Each unemployed person has a unique story. The details are different but the feelings are common among anyone dealing with joblessness…read the rest of the article on the Daily Herald

Daily Herald: I am a woman who has it all, just not all at the same time

Ten-year-old girls rule the world. I have no research studies or stats to prove my thesis. I was just once a 10-year-old girl myself. Playing with “Star Wars” action figures right alongside of my Barbie dolls, never considering I couldn’t have and be it all! Dreams of being a mother and teacher seemed as reachable as becoming a doctor and wife.

So now I am the mother of a 10-year-old girl. She is amazing, smart and free. No trace of fears and insecurities that may still come with the teen years. The opinions of boys and limiting doubts haven’t crept into her psyche yet. Brooklyn can paint her toe nails, build forts and read books about space travel believing all the time that she can be anything she wants to be in the world. The rest of the article….10 year old girls know things
