Daily Herald: 10 things to consider when someone is going through infertility

My first baby is 17 years old. He is a beautiful, tall 6-foot-7-inch young man. I was also blessed to also be the mother of an amazing 11-year-old girl. Parenthood has been one of the greatest but also most challenging stewardships of my life, and reaching that ultimate role of parent was extremely challenging.

Seven years of infertility made my 53 pounds of weight gain and months of nausea more of a pre-gift to the greatest gift of a 10-pound baby. Finally being pregnant was worth everything.

Our struggle to have a baby ended with … a baby. This isn’t always the ending for many infertile couples of the world. During those emotionally charged years of hoping for a baby, I gained some personal insights into what was helpful and supportive. During the infertility years, I also collected a list of what would be considered unwelcome advice. Read more….. Fall 2014 007

Daily Herald: Landscape lingo: We don’t build a house without a plan, so why put in a yard without a plan?

In a world of DIY stores, YouTube instructional videos and Pinterest boards, people often think they can install or build anything, without help. While I am a big fan of saving money and learning new skills, it would be considered crazy to build a home without construction plans. When it comes to landscaping, why do homeowners often “dig in” without any plans in hand?

Daily Herald: Yoga helps teens with depression, self-worth and faith

Researchers from Harvard Medical School conducted a study on high school students. Some of the students did a 10-week yoga PE class, and some did a regular PE class. The yoga class included meditation along with yoga poses. At the beginning of the study, all the students took a number of psychological tests for things like mood problems, anxiety and anger expression.

The researchers found teens who did not do yoga during their PE classes scored higher for mood problems or anxiety, while those who did do yoga scored lower on these tests, or their scores remained the same. Teens who didn’t do yoga reported more negative emotions, while the teens who did do yoga reported fewer negative emotions. Read the rest of the article here….

Daily Herald: Nutcracker tradition proves a guidepost for life

“Family traditions counter alienation and confusion. They help us define who we are; they provide something steady, reliable and safe in a confusing world.” — Author and Life Coach Susan Lieberman

My grandmother used to take me to see “The Nutcracker,” when I was a little girl. Carrying this tradition on with my daughter has provided the bonding material for our relationship.

For the past six years, my dear friend and her daughter have joined us in creating this holiday tradition. It has become an anticipated date for all of us. Buying surprise matching dresses for our girls, going out to eat and then attending “The Nutcracker.” This year we enjoyed Tchaikovsky’s masterpiece at the beautiful Covey Center for the Arts, in downtown Provo. After having a lovely dinner at Gurus, on Center Street, we shared a magical night with our dearest friends. Read the rest of the article… nutcracker 2014 (3)

Daily Herald: Grandma taught me how to grow older beautifully

November’s fall leaf-covered ground, cold temperatures and the beginnings of the holidays bring a lot of emotion and memories to mind. My grandmother, Morine Larson, had a late October birthday, so this time of year is always special to me. She loved me more as a mother loves her child than a grandparent. I so completely adored her.

Nana taught me so many things. She has been dead for almost 10 years and there isn’t a day that passes that I don’t think of her or see the evidence of her example in my daily life.

My week with leprosy begins with a no makeup challenge

MAKE UP FREE – PSEUDO “LEPROSY” EXPERIENCE:

For the next 10 days I get to practice having a sort of pseudo “leprosy” condition but it feels and looks like it I have some skin disease. I am writing a piece about “beauty”, aging and what tools we use to age gracefully. So I had a facial procedure at the amazing Dr. Kjar and Candessa Aesthetics office. A Fotofacial… it is a procedure of using light therapy to help with the appearance of age or hormonal spots. The result is that your skin and spots get really dark and then, after 10 days, they fluff off. So before you see me at church, or speaking this week or at my open house Tuesday – please be warned, I do know my skin looks a bit different. I am embracing this experience. I am not wearing makeup – embarrassing my kids a little. I even went to tithing settlement this morning… sweet bishop didn’t even ask.

I know that many humble sweet people deal with real physical scars, imperfections and diseases, issues of their skin for an entire lifetime. I will only be dealing with it for a few days. But I am open to having this experience and gaining some understanding from just a few days of looking less then perfect.

It is a personal EXERCISE to not cover up IMPERFECTIONS. We all cover up. We do it to some degree or another. We get dressed up – we use make up – we smile when inside we are crying. This week I am open to the process of being MORE EXPOSED. I am excited to see what I feel and learn while my face looks starkly different than normal.

Who wants to join me for a make up free day? See how you feel, how people react and how comfortable or uncomfortable you feel when you don’t cover up the flaws?24 hours after Fotofacial

Daily Herald: I can’t get rid of it. What if I need it someday?

A discussion of de-cluttering closets and forgiveness

It happens close to the holidays and again in spring and at the start of school. A few times a year, I annoy my children. I ask them to go through their toys, books and clothes. Before the Christmas and birthday gifts flood their rooms, I strongly encourage (OK, push) them to get rid of old stuff to make room for the new.

It is a spiritual practice. Letting go is more than Disney song lyrics. It means when we let go of the old we are open up to the new.

Teaching my children to eliminate or throw out what no longer serves them makes room for new, greater gifts to materialize. Kids suddenly appreciate their toys and clothes; especially when they can get to them on a more orderly shelf. Children seem to notice and play with what they previously had taken for granted…the rest of the article.
