My week with leprosy begins with a no makeup challenge
MAKE UP FREE – PSEUDO “LEPROSY” EXPERIENCE:
For the next 10 days I get to practice having a sort of pseudo “leprosy” condition but it feels and looks like it I have some skin disease. I am writing a piece about “beauty”, aging and what tools we use to age gracefully. So I had a facial procedure at the amazing Dr. Kjar and Candessa Aesthetics office. A Fotofacial… it is a procedure of using light therapy to help with the appearance of age or hormonal spots. The result is that your skin and spots get really dark and then, after 10 days, they fluff off. So before you see me at church, or speaking this week or at my open house Tuesday – please be warned, I do know my skin looks a bit different. I am embracing this experience. I am not wearing makeup – embarrassing my kids a little. I even went to tithing settlement this morning… sweet bishop didn’t even ask.
I know that many humble sweet people deal with real physical scars, imperfections and diseases, issues of their skin for an entire lifetime. I will only be dealing with it for a few days. But I am open to having this experience and gaining some understanding from just a few days of looking less then perfect.
It is a personal EXERCISE to not cover up IMPERFECTIONS. We all cover up. We do it to some degree or another. We get dressed up – we use make up – we smile when inside we are crying. This week I am open to the process of being MORE EXPOSED. I am excited to see what I feel and learn while my face looks starkly different than normal.
Who wants to join me for a make up free day? See how you feel, how people react and how comfortable or uncomfortable you feel when you don’t cover up the flaws?
