Book Review: Because You Love To Hate Me edited by Amerie
Because You Love To Hate Me
Blurb:
Leave it to the heroes to save the world--villains just want to rule the world.
In this unique YA anthology, thirteen acclaimed, bestselling authors team up with thirteen influential BookTubers to reimagine fairy tales from the oft-misunderstood villains' points of view.
These fractured, unconventional spins on classics like "Medusa," Sherlock Holmes, and "Jack and the Beanstalk" provide a behind-the-curtain look at villains' acts of vengeance, defiance, and rage--and the pain, heartbreak, and sorrow that spurned them on. No fairy tale will ever seem quite the same again!
Featuring writing from . . .
Authors: Renée Ahdieh, Ameriie, Soman Chainani, Susan Dennard, Sarah Enni, Marissa Meyer, Cindy Pon, Victoria Schwab, Samantha Shannon, Adam Silvera, Andrew Smith, April Genevieve Tucholke, and Nicola Yoon
BookTubers: Benjamin Alderson (Benjaminoftomes), Sasha Alsberg (abookutopia), Whitney Atkinson (WhittyNovels), Tina Burke (ChristinaReadsYA blog and TheLushables), Catriona Feeney (LittleBookOwl), Jesse George (JessetheReader), Zoë Herdt (readbyzoe), Samantha Lane (Thoughts on Tomes), Sophia Lee (thebookbasement), Raeleen Lemay (padfootandprongs07), Regan Perusse (PeruseProject), Christine Riccio (polandbananasBOOKS), and Steph Sinclair & Kat Kennedy (Cuddlebuggery blog and channel).
My Review: Before this book came out I kind of wanted to preorder it right away, kind of wanted to wait until I could look at in a bookstore before deciding but I preordered it anyway to get the preorder incentive - which I haven't gotten yet. Has anyone else?
Anyway, now I wish I would have waited or gotten it from the library. There were a few stories I liked in 'Because You Love To Hate Me' but were the few that I liked worth buying the whole book? I'm not sure. There were more stories I found boring/didn't like/ skipped over entirely that stories I enjoyed.
Then there were the pieces from the selected Booktubers, most of which I didn't like at all. Some of it was entertaining, and I liked seeing what the challenge was they issued to the authors, but I could have done without their sections altogether.
There's also the matter of the stories themselves. Some were written like stories, one written like texts, one like a letter, and one like poetry with no real consistency. The premise is 13 tales of villainy and although I actually liked the story written in text the most out of all, it wasn't really a story. Sure, it told a story - but it didn't read one. There were a lot of details the reader had to fill in for themselves.
Overall, I think the point of this book was to show the side of villains that often get overlooked, the backstories that made them the way they are that are popping up in certain retellings, like Heartless by Marissa Meyer or Stealing Snow by Danielle Paige which was what initially interested me in this book but I'm still sort of dissatisfied with my decision to purchase. It did give me a chance to discover authors I've heard of but never heard a book by before and to give me a taste of their writing style, which I appreciate, but it was just kind of a meh read for me.
My Rating:3 of 5 Stars!

"What I'm Reading" Wednesday #91
This "WIR"-Wednesday I'm reading a book in a genre I usually don't like, but I find myself loving this interesting book...
Defy the Stars (Constellation #1) by Claudia Gray
Blurb:
She’s a soldier.
Noemi Vidal is seventeen years old and sworn to protect her planet, Genesis. She’s willing to risk anything—including her own life. To their enemies on Earth, she’s a rebel.
He’s a machine.
Abandoned in space for years, utterly alone, Abel has advanced programming that’s begun to evolve. He wants only to protect his creator, and to be free. To the people of Genesis, he’s an abomination.
Noemi and Abel are enemies in an interstellar war, forced by chance to work together as they embark on a daring journey through the stars. Their efforts would end the fighting for good, but they’re not without sacrifice. The stakes are even higher than either of them first realized, and the more time they spend together, the more they’re forced to question everything they’d been taught was true.
Why I Chose This Book | What I Think So Far: As I've mentioned before, Sci-Fi isn't one of my favorite genres. Or at least it never used to be. That's slowly changing thanks to Jennifer L. Armentrout's Lux Series, Katharine McGee's Thousandth Floor Series, Wendy Higgins's Unknown Trilogy... and this book. I kept seeing people talking about this book and read an excerpt to see if I would like it. Initially, when you first start reading this book you might think it's going to be a slow read, but it really isn't. I'm already in love with Abel and Noemi and I can't wait to see where this story goes!

{Book Review Tour} Can't Hardly Breathe by Gena Showalter

From New York Times Bestselling author Gena Showalter, comes the next standalone romance in the Original Heartbreakers Series—CAN’T HARDLY BREATHE!Order your copy today!
Can't Hardly Breathe (Original Heartbreakers #4) by Gena Showalter

Bullied in high school, Dorothea Mathis's past is full of memories she'd rather forget. But there's one she can't seem to shake—her long-standing crush on former army ranger Daniel Porter. Now that the sexy bad boy has started using her inn as his personal playground, she should kick him out…but his every heated glance makes her want to join him instead.
Daniel returned to Strawberry Valley, Oklahoma, to care for his ailing father and burn off a little steam with no strings attached. Though he craves curvy Dorothea night and day, he's as marred by his past as she is by hers. The more he desires her, the more he fears losing her.
But every sizzling encounter leaves him desperate for more, and soon Daniel must make a choice: take a chance on love or walk away forever.

Dorothea was picked on in high school but her one bright point was Daniel Porter, her high school crush. Unfortunately, Daniel's kind words are quickly replaced in Dorothea's mind when she sees him with another girl and feels foolish for believing he might have been interested in her.
Now years later with a failed marriage under her belt, Dorothea is back in Strawberry Valley trying to rebuild her life, her self-confidence, and her relationship with her sister Holly. After giving up college and her dreams of becoming a meteorologist to work two jobs and pay her husband's way through college only to have him cheat on her, the last thing Dorothea needs is Daniel walking back into her life and twisting her feelings all around again.
Daniel Porter's nights are terrorized with crippling PTSD so as a rule he's made relationships lasting more than a night or two a no-go to protect himself and his father, who he doesn't wish to disappoint when a relationship goes sour. But one look at Dorothea Mathis all grown up has him throwing his rule out the window. He shouldn't want her, shouldn't taint her life with his issues, but he can't stay away.
Will Dorothea agree to give things a go between them without any strings attached? Or will Daniel risk losing the one woman he could see himself building a future with? Will it take a life-or-death situation for them to see clearly or tear them apart?
I loved Dorothea and Daniel's story and the introduction to (I hope) the next two "Original Heartbreakers" to get a book. The story moved away from the original three couples in the series but we still saw glimpses of Jessie Kay and Harlow, which was great.
Both Dorothea's self-image issues and Daniel's PTSD were both realistically written, although I wish for once that an author would write a plus-sized character that is confident in herself instead of always seeing everything that's wrong with themselves. As a plus-sized woman myself, I don't constantly harp on whether my thighs are a little jiggly and I would never demand a man to turn off the lights before taking me to bed.
I did, however, love Dorothea's passion for the weather and her cool ideas for the themed rooms at the Inn as well as how cute Daniel was with the dog he found on the side of the road.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book, almost more-so than the first three books!
My Rating:4.5 of 5 Stars!
Excerpt
Hands trembling, she hooked the vacuum to the cart and rolled the cargo to the supply room…where her younger sister Holly was smoking a cigarette.
Coughing, Dorothea claimed the cigarette and stubbed the tip into an ashtray.
“Hey!” Eighteen-year-old Holly glared at her. “I wasn’t done.”
“You mean you weren’t done giving our guests lung cancer and stinking up the inn?”
“Exactly.” Ever the smart aleck, Holly tossed a piece of gum in her mouth and popped a bubble in Dorothea’s face. “Besides, we don’t really have guests, now, do we? Since you took over, only four people have stayed here. Mayor Trueman and his side slice, and Daniel Porter and whatever bimbo he happens to be banging.”
Not true! A few months ago, Dorothea had hired Har¬low Glass, and everyone in town had rented a room to witness the former bully’s downfall.
Good times.
Dorothea hadn’t wanted to like Harlow, but dang it, something bad had happened to the girl in the years since
high school, and she’d changed. More than that, Harlow had done everything in her power to make amends, and eventually Dorothea had warmed up to her.
Now the beautiful brunette was married to reformed playboy Beck Ockley. The happy couple were expect-ing their first child in a few months.
A razor-sharp pang cut through Dorothea. Won’t think about my own—
Nope. Slam the breaks.
To ward off the oncoming pity party, she drew in a deep breath…slowly released it… Good, that was good.
She focused on her sister. Holly had pinned back the sides of her jet-black hair, the remaining locks tumbling all the way to the metal links anchored around her bi¬ceps. She’d paired a crimson corset top—her first pop of color in months—with a ruffled black skirt, ripped fishnet stockings and combat boots caked with mud Dor¬othea would have to clean from the floors.
In a town as small as Strawberry Valley, Oklahoma, Holly was a legend. Unique.
“My inn, my rules,” Dorothea said. “No smoking. Ever.” Besides, she suspected the teenager only ever lit up to aggravate her. Not once had Dorothea witnessed an actual puff.
“You’re worse than a Mogwai that’s been fed after midnight.”
A Gremlins reference? Seriously?
“No wonder Jazz left you,” her sister added.
Air hissed between her teeth. Holly might hate her guts, but the teenager loved to insult her, and this barb hit harder than most.
Rather than waiting for love, as Dorothea had dreamed, she’d settled for companionship, marrying the first guy to pay attention to her. Worse, she’d believed his words rather than his actions. I adore you and only want what’s best for you…for us.

Book Review: Oblivion by Jennifer L. Armentrout
Oblivion (Lux Series #1.5) by Jennifer L. Armentrout
Blurb:
Experience the epic love story of OBSIDIAN as told by its hero, Daemon Black…
I knew the moment Katy Swartz moved in next door, there was going to be trouble. Lots of it.
And trouble’s the last thing I need, since I’m not exactly from around here. My people arrived on Earth from Lux, a planet thirteen billion light years away. Plus, if there’s one thing I know, it’s that humans can’t be trusted. We scare them. We can do things they only dream about, and honestly, we make them look weak as hell. ‘Cuz they are.
But Kat is getting to me in ways no one else has, and I can't stop myself from wanting her—or wanting to use my powers to protect her. She makes me weak, and I’m the strongest of our kind, tasked with protecting us all. So this one simple girl…she can mean the end for us. Because the Luxen have an even bigger enemy—the Arum, and I need to stay on my game.
Falling for Katy—a human—won't just place her in danger. It could get us all killed, and that’s one thing I’ll never let happen...
My Review: I was eager to read Oblivion, Obsidian through Daemon's eyes and my favorite sexy alien did not disappoint. He was sarcastic, vain, and kind of a jerk - but that's what Katy, and the reader love about him most.
This book is not identical to Obsidian and the reader should not be confused with that fact. There are scenes in Obsidian that Daemon was not present for which are not present in Oblivion, and scenes which Katy was not present for during the time of Obsidian that we see for the first time in Oblivion, making this book its own unique step away from the original.
I loved Jennifer L. Armentrout's writing, as I have with the rest of the books in this series and it remains one of my favorite YA series and YA couplings. However, I think Daemon's attraction was blatantly obvious and it was annoying as a reader that he wouldn't/couldn't admit that for most of the book. We get it, after the Dawson/Beth situation he was extra cautious and didn't want anything to happen to himself or his sister, but come on! You don't know why you want to be near her all the time? Really?
The other thing I've found with books set in the male lead's perspective after a book is set in the heroine's perspective (like Wendy Higgins's Sweet Temptation and Abbi Glines's Rush Too Far) is that I get bored with these books easily. They're not identical to the original, but they're close enough that I feel like I've heard all this before. If I wanted to reread those events I'd just reread the original book. It makes me want to hop in a time machine and tell the author to just write that first book in altering perspectives.
Overall, I enjoyed reading this book because it was like revisiting an old friend but it was close enough to Obsidian that I would have rather read that again instead.
My Rating:4 of 5 Stars!

It's September! Summer vacation is fully behind us and I honestly don't know where the time went but I can tell you that I feel like I spent the entire summer working! August was both a busier and lighter month for me and you'll see why...
READING
Books I Reviewed In August:
Walk the Edge by Katie McGarry
Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen (Audiobook Review)
Stalking Jack the Ripper by Kerri Maniscalco
Unforgiven by Lauren Kate
After the Game by Abbi Glines
Unrest by Wendy Higgins
Fallen Heir by Erin Watt
The Dazzling Heights by Katharine McGee
Eliza and Her Monsters by Francesca Zappia
Books I Read In August: Can't Hardly Breathe by Gena Showalter
Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen (Audiobook)
Stalking Jack the Ripper by Kerri Maniscalco
Fallen Heir by Erin Watt
Unforgiven by Lauren Kate
Unrest by Wendy Higgins
Eliza and Her Monsters by Francesca Zappia

Books to-be-read in September:
Because You Love to Hate Me edited by Amerie
The Dead House by Dawn Kurtagich (reread)
The Graces by Laura Eve
Z: A Novel of Zelda Fitzgerald by Theresa Anne Fowler
Defy the Stars by Claudia Gray
WRITING In August I worked on some ideas for my NaNoWriMo project, but mainly I began working on a short story I plan to post online for Halloween. It's a horror story and I'm hoping readers will be pleasantly frightened by it.
BLOGGING In August I participated in 2 Cover Reveals, 1 Release Day Blitz, Spotlighted 2 Bookish Retailers I love and did my usual "What I'm Reading" Wednesday, #BookMail Thursday, and #Booktag Saturday posts. I also reviewed 1 ARC.
PUBLISHING In August I set up the cover reveal sign-up form for CurseBreaker and got it ready to submit for pre-orders (which should be up soon). To help reveal the cover of CurseBreaker on September 15, fill out this form!

#BookTag Saturday: The Coffee Book Tag
This week I've found a book tag that embraces one of my favorite things: coffee! Yes, this week I'm tackling the Coffee Book Tag. Book Tag originally found on: Paper Fury
BLACK: NAME A SERIES THAT’S TOUGH TO GET INTO BUT HAS HARDCORE FANS.
Three Dark Crowns by Kendare Blake
I may just be saying that because I had a hard time getting into it, but the first book was mind-blowingly boring. I swear nothing happened in the whole book, they just spent a lot of time strategizing about what would happen when the three queens faced off. Yet everyone else seems to love the first book and I've heard rave early reviews of One Dark Throne.
PEPPERMINT MOCHA: NAME A BOOK THAT GETS MORE POPULAR DURING THE WINTER OR A FESTIVE TIME OF YEAR.
The Winter Witch by Paula Brackston
Maybe it's the title, but this book, Wintersong, and Stealing Snow are all books that remind me of winter, although I read Stealing Snow last fall and Wintersong in late winter and I can't remember what season it was when I read The Winter Witch.
HOT CHOCOLATE: WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE CHILDREN’S BOOK?
The Witch of Blackbird Pond by Elizabeth George Speare
The Witch of Blackbird Pond is probably one of the few books I was assigned to read in school that I actually liked. Really liked. Why? Because there's some romance in it. Teachers aren't too big on assigning books with romantic themes which I think is sad because love is the most important thing in life, but I digress. I still reread this book every October even though it's a MG book.
DOUBLE SHOT OF ESPRESSO: NAME A BOOK THAT KEPT YOU ON THE EDGE OF YOUR SEAT FROM START TO FINISH.
Broken Prince by Erin Watt
I mean we had that cliff-hanger at the end of Paper Princess and I was dying to find out how Reed would explain what he'd done and dig himself out of the hole he'd dug for himself. Would Ella forgive him? And then that one ended in a cliffhanger! Agh! Erin Watt, you torture me!
STARBUCKS: NAME A BOOK YOU SEE EVERYWHERE.
Any of Sarah J. Maas's books, but probably A Court of Mist and Fury or Empire of Storms
It's hard to believe that before April of 2016 I'd never heard of Sarah J. Maas. Now every time I go on bookstagram I see tons of pictures of her books. Every. Single. Day. I mean, I love SJM and the TOG and ACOTAR series, but those books are everywhere!
THAT HIPSTER COFFEE SHOP: GIVE A BOOK BY AN INDIE AUTHOR A SHOUTOUT
Awaken by Skye Malone
I love Skye Malone's books. She's probably my favorite indie author since I can't get enough of her books! And now I wait, anxiously awaiting the next Awakened Fate book... please be soon?!?!
OOPS! I ACCIDENTALLY GOT DECAF: NAME A BOOK YOU WERE EXPECTING MORE FROM.
A Court of Wings and Ruin by Sarah J. Maas
There was just so much hype and I don't think ACOWAR lived up to it. I was expecting so much and in the end, I think this book could have been half the length it was and been much better.
THE PERFECT BLEND: NAME A BOOK OR SERIES THAT WAS BOTH BITTER AND SWEET, BUT ULTIMATELY SATISFYING.
The Hollow Trilogy by Jessica Verday
Oh, the emotional trauma Abbey goes through throughout this trilogy. Her best friend's death - falling in love with a dead guy - thinking she's crazy - not being able to touch said hot dead guy. Oh, how we love the things that cause us pain the most!
GREEN TEA: NAME A BOOK OR SERIES THAT IS QUIETLY BEAUTIFUL.
North of Beautiful by Justina Chen
This book is so beautiful. It's about coming to terms with who you are and learning to love yourself. It's definitely a must read for teenage girls with self-esteem issues.
CHAI TEA: NAME A BOOK OR SERIES THAT MAKES YOU DREAM OF FAR OFF PLACES.
Hunting Prince Dracula by Kerri Maniscalco
This book took me to a place I never thought I'd want to go - Romania - and made me fall in love with Bran Castle and the history of the area and folklore. Kerri Maniscalco's excellent world building has once again given me wanderlust.
EARL GREY: NAME YOUR FAVOURITE CLASSIC.
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
Because of Mr. Darcy. Enough said.

BLACK: NAME A SERIES THAT’S TOUGH TO GET INTO BUT HAS HARDCORE FANS.

1. Tower of Dawn by Sarah J. Maas
Tower of Dawn
Throne of Glass Series #6
Sarah J. Maas
Bloomsbury
September 5, 2017 Blurb:
In the next installment of the New York Times bestselling Throne of Glass series, follow Chaol on his sweeping journey to a distant empire.
Chaol Westfall has always defined himself by his unwavering loyalty, his strength, and his position as the Captain of the Guard. But all of that has changed since the glass castle shattered, since his men were slaughtered, since the King of Adarlan spared him from a killing blow, but left his body broken.
His only shot at recovery lies with the legendary healers of the Torre Cesme in Antica—the stronghold of the southern continent's mighty empire. And with war looming over Dorian and Aelin back home, their survival might lie with Chaol and Nesryn convincing its rulers to ally with them.
But what they discover in Antica will change them both—and be more vital to saving Erilea than they could have imagined.
Why I Want to Read This Book: I was unsure at first that I wanted to read Tower of Dawn because I'm just indifferent about Chaol, but since the events of this book might come up in the final TOG book, and since I love Sarah J. Maas no matter what she writes, I'm definitely getting excited to read this book.
2. Warcross by Marie Lu
Warcross
Warcross #1
Marie Lu
G.P. Putnam’s Sons Books for Young Readers
September 12, 2017 Blurb:
For the millions who log in every day, Warcross isn’t just a game—it’s a way of life. The obsession started ten years ago and its fan base now spans the globe, some eager to escape from reality and others hoping to make a profit. Struggling to make ends meet, teenage hacker Emika Chen works as a bounty hunter, tracking down players who bet on the game illegally. But the bounty hunting world is a competitive one, and survival has not been easy. Needing to make some quick cash, Emika takes a risk and hacks into the opening game of the international Warcross Championships—only to accidentally glitch herself into the action and become an overnight sensation.
Convinced she’s going to be arrested, Emika is shocked when instead she gets a call from the game’s creator, the elusive young billionaire Hideo Tanaka, with an irresistible offer. He needs a spy on the inside of this year’s tournament in order to uncover a security problem . . . and he wants Emika for the job. With no time to lose, Emika’s whisked off to Tokyo and thrust into a world of fame and fortune that she’s only dreamed of. But soon her investigation uncovers a sinister plot, with major consequences for the entire Warcross empire.
Why I Want to Read This Book: I kept hearing about this book and at first, I liked the cover but the book didn't interest me, but then I read the blurb and it sounds really amazing. It sounds like stepping into a video game, maybe mixed with that book/movie nerve for some reason. I just hope there's some romance for my sake!
3. Autoboyography by Christina Lauren
Autoboyography
Christina Lauren
Simon & Schuster
September 19, 2017 Blurb: Fangirl meets Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda in this funny and poignant coming-of-age novel from New York Times bestselling author Christina Lauren about two boys who fall in love in a writing class—one from a progressive family and the other from a conservative religious community.
Three years ago, Tanner Scott’s family relocated from California to Utah, a move that nudged the bisexual teen temporarily back into the closet. Now, with one semester of high school to go, and no obstacles between him and out-of-state college freedom, Tanner plans to coast through his remaining classes and clear out of Utah.
But when his best friend Autumn dares him to take Provo High’s prestigious Seminar—where honor roll students diligently toil to draft a book in a semester—Tanner can’t resist going against his better judgment and having a go, if only to prove to Autumn how silly the whole thing is. Writing a book in four months sounds simple. Four months is an eternity.
It turns out, Tanner is only partly right: four months is a long time. After all, it takes only one second for him to notice Sebastian Brother, the Mormon prodigy who sold his own Seminar novel the year before and who now mentors the class. And it takes less than a month for Tanner to fall completely in love with him. Why I Want to Read This Book: This is not my usual type of read. I've never been into books where the main characters are part of the LGBT community (because I don't relate, not because I'm against it or anything... I also dislike reading books in the male perspective as a girl, so there.) But I love Christina Lauren and this book actually sounds like I might like it.
4. Hunting Prince Dracula (Stalking Jack the Ripper #2) by Kerri Maniscalco
Hunting Prince Dracula
Stalking Jack the Ripper #2
Kerri Maniscalco
JIMMY Books
September 19, 2017 Blurb: In this hotly anticipated sequel to the haunting #1 bestseller Stalking Jack the Ripper, bizarre murders are discovered in the castle of Prince Vlad the Impaler, otherwise known as Dracula. Could it be a copycat killer...or has the depraved prince been brought back to life?
Following the grief and horror of her discovery of Jack the Ripper's true identity, Audrey Rose Wadsworth has no choice but to flee London and its memories. Together with the arrogant yet charming Thomas Cresswell, she journeys to the dark heart of Romania, home to one of Europe's best schools of forensic medicine...and to another notorious killer, Vlad the Impaler, whose thirst for blood became legend.
But her life's dream is soon tainted by blood-soaked discoveries in the halls of the school's forbidding castle, and Audrey Rose is compelled to investigate the strangely familiar murders. What she finds brings all her terrifying fears to life once again. Why You'll Want To Read This Book: Thomas and Audrey Rose are back, this time attending school in Romania in DRACULA's CASTLE! There will be murder, there will be vampire lore, there will be history, and there will be romance! In my opinion, this is even better than Stalking Jack the Ripper!
5. The Language of Thorns by Leigh Bardugo
The Language of Thorns, Midnight Tales
and Dangerous Magic
Leigh Bardugo
Macmillan
September 26, 2017 Blurb: Love speaks in flowers. Truth requires thorns.
Travel to a world of dark bargains struck by moonlight, of haunted towns and hungry woods, of talking beasts and gingerbread golems, where a young mermaid's voice can summon deadly storms and where a river might do a lovestruck boy's bidding but only for a terrible price.
Inspired by myth, fairy tale, and folklore, #1 New York Times–bestselling author Leigh Bardugo has crafted a deliciously atmospheric collection of short stories filled with betrayals, revenge, sacrifice, and love.
Perfect for new readers and dedicated fans, these tales will transport you to lands both familiar and strange—to a fully realized world of dangerous magic that millions have visited through the novels of the Grishaverse.
This collection of six stories includes three brand-new tales, all of them lavishly illustrated with art that changes with each turn of the page, culminating in six stunning full-spread illustrations as rich in detail as the stories themselves. Why I Want to Read This Book: I'm loving that there've been quite a few collections of short stories published this year and this one sounds particularly good. Legends and myths of the Grishaverse? Illustrated artwork? Yes, please!
6. The Ravenous by Amy Lukavics Blurb:
The Ravenous
Amy Lukavics
Harlequin Teen
September 26, 2017From the outside, the Cane family looks like they have it all. A successful military father, a loving mother and five beautiful teenage daughters. But on the inside, life isn't quite so idyllic: the Cane sisters can barely stand each other, their father is always away, and their neglectful mother struggles with addiction and depression.
When their youngest and most beloved sister, Rose, dies in a tragic accident, Mona Cane and her sisters are devastated. And when she is brought back from the dead, they are relieved. But soon they discover that Rose must eat human flesh to survive, and when their mother abandons them, the sisters will find out just how far they'll go to keep their family together. Why I Want to Read This Book: I needed at least one scary book to get me through the fall and Amy Lukavics always brings the scare! I'm curious about this one, it sounds a little different than Lukavics's other books so I'm interested to see if it will pack the punch that her other two books have.
7. One Dark Throne by Kendare Blake
One Dark Throne
Three Dark Crowns #2
Kendare Blake
September 19, 2017 Blurb: The battle for the Crown has begun, but which of the three sisters will prevail?
With the unforgettable events of the Quickening behind them and the Ascension Year underway, all bets are off. Katharine, once the weak and feeble sister, is stronger than ever before. Arsinoe, after discovering the truth about her powers, must figure out how to make her secret talent work in her favor without anyone finding out. And Mirabella, once thought to be the strongest sister of all and the certain Queen Crowned, faces attacks like never before—ones that put those around her in danger she can’t seem to prevent.
In this enthralling sequel to Kendare Blake’s New York Times bestselling Three Dark Crowns, Fennbirn’s deadliest queens must face the one thing standing in their way of the crown: each other. Why I Want to Read This Book: This is just a maybe for me. I wanted to love Three Dark Crowns but I've tried reading it and listening to the audiobook with no luck. However, everyone that I've seen post early reviews have said how good One Dark Throne is, and how much quicker paced it is than the first book, so I kind of want to read it yet I'm kind of afraid to waste time on it after not liking the first book.
8. There's Someone Inside Your House by Stephanie Perkins Blurb:
There's Someone Inside Your House
Stephanie Perkins
Dutton
September 26, 2017Scream meets YA in this hotly-anticipated new novel from the bestselling author of Anna and the French Kiss.
One-by-one, the students of Osborne High are dying in a series of gruesome murders, each with increasing and grotesque flair. As the terror grows closer and the hunt intensifies for the killer, the dark secrets among them must finally be confronted.
International bestselling author Stephanie Perkins returns with a fresh take on the classic teen slasher story that’s fun, quick-witted, and completely impossible to put down. Why I Want To Read This Book: Did you miss the part where it says Scream meets YA?!?! Scream is only one of my absolute favorite horror movie franchises and for this book to be written in the theme/style of that is right up my alley!
9. Ally (Nemesis #2) by Anna Banks
Ally
Nemesis #2
Anna Banks
Feiwel & Friends
October 3, 2017 Blurb: Princess Sepora of Serubel and King Tarik of Theoria have formed an uneasy truce between their kingdoms since the deadly plague began to rip through Theoria. Since their feelings for each other are entangled in politics and power, they must use their own trusted resources to find common ground.
But when traitors with powerful allies arise from unexpected places, Tarik and Sepora face challenges that will change both of their kingdoms forever. Will they learn whom to trust—including each other—in time to save their kingdoms, their relationship, and even their lives? Why I Want to Read This Book: I really liked Nemesis and I can't wait to see how this duology will end. Seriously, I would have given my first born for an ARC of this book! Will Sepora and Tarik end up together? I need to know!
10. Piper by Jay Asher and Jessica Freeburg
Piper
Jay Asher & Jessica Freeburg
Razorbill
October 31, 2017 Blurb: Long ago, in a small village in the middle of a deep, dark forest, there lived a lonely, deaf girl named Maggie. Shunned by her village because of her disability, her only comfort comes from her vivid imagination. Maggie has a gift for inventing stories and dreams of one day finding her fairy-tale love.
When Maggie meets the mysterious Piper, it seems that all her wishes are coming true. Spellbound, Maggie falls hard for him and plunges headfirst into his magical world. But as she grows closer to the Piper, Maggie discovers that he has a dark side.
The boy of Maggie's dreams might just turn out to be her worst nightmare... Why I Want to Read This Book: You should know by now that I love retellings, but I didn't expect a retelling of the pied piper from the author of 13 Reasons Why. I'm intrigued, not only because of the author's genre change, but because this book sounds really good! Not to mention that it's a graphic novel and the cover is really awesome!
11. Can't Let Go (Original Heartbreakers #5) by Gena Showalter
Can't Let Go
Original Heartbreakers #5
Gena Showalter
Harlequin
October 31, 2017 Blurb: New York Times bestselling author Gena Showalter is back with a sizzling Original Heartbreakers tale about an icy war vet and the only woman capable of melting him…
With trust issues a mile long, Ryanne Wade has sworn off men. Then Jude Laurent walks into her bar and all bets are off. The former Army Ranger has suffered unimaginably, first being maimed in battle then losing his wife and daughters to a drunk driver. Making the brooding widower smile is priority one. Resisting him? Impossible.
To Jude, Ryanne is off limits. And yet the beautiful bartender who serves alcohol to potential motorists tempts him like no other. When a rival bar threatens her livelihood, and her life, he can’t turn away. She triggers something in him he thought long buried, and he’s determined to protect her, whatever the cost.
As their already scorching attraction continues to heat, the damaged soldier knows he must let go of his past to hold on to his future...or risk losing the second chance he desperately needs. Why I Want To Read This Book: I really love this series and I can't wait for it to continue with Ryanne and Jude's story. Sexy, damaged men (my favorite type) and sassy women? A guaranteed good read!
Undone
Unknown Trilogy #3
Wendy Higgins
Self-Published
November 28, 2017 12. Undone by Wendy Higgins Blurb:
Final book in the Unknown Trilogy! This story will be told in dual points of view, both Amber and Remy. Why I Want to Read This Book: I love this trilogy and I have to see it to the end and see what kind of resolution it will have. Will it have a positive ending? I'm not sure. I hope so, but the way things have become in the world in Unrest leaves me unsure. Even if all the characters end up with who they are supposed to will they be able to win back Earth from the aliens?

What do you think of the fall releases this year? It looks like September is going to be a pretty awesome month in my opinion. Did I miss any books that you're dying to get your hands on? Renegades by Marissa Meyer? All the Crooked Saints by Maggie Stiefvater? Before She Ignites by Jodi Meadows? Something else?

There will be murder, there will be vampire lore, there will be history, and there will be romance! In my opinion, this is even better than Stalking Jack the Ripper!

and Dangerous Magic
