"What I'm Reading" Wednesday #97

This "WIR"-Wednesday I'm revisiting a book I DNF'd almost a year ago. Initially, I didn't think the book was for me, but I can't stop thinking about it so I'm going to give it another try as part of my "Give A Book A Second Chance" Challenge. This week I'm reading...
Glitter by Aprilynne Pike Blurb:From #1 New York Times bestselling author Aprilynne Pike comes a truly original new novel—Breaking Bad meets Marie Antoinette in a near-future world where the residents of Versailles live like it’s the eighteenth century and an almost-queen turns to drug dealing to save her own life.
Outside the palace of Versailles, it’s modern day. Inside, the people dress, eat, and act like it’s the eighteenth century—with the added bonus of technology to make court life lavish, privileged, and frivolous. The palace has every indulgence, but for one pretty young thing, it’s about to become a very beautiful prison. When Danica witnesses an act of murder by the young king, her mother makes a cruel power play . . . blackmailing the king into making Dani his queen. When she turns eighteen, Dani will marry the most ruthless and dangerous man of the court. She has six months to escape her terrifying destiny. Six months to raise enough money to disappear into the real world beyond the palace gates. Her ticket out? Glitter. A drug so powerful that a tiny pinch mixed into a pot of rouge or lip gloss can make the wearer hopelessly addicted. Addicted to a drug Dani can sell for more money than she ever dreamed. But in Versailles, secrets are impossible to keep. And the most dangerous secret—falling for a drug dealer outside the palace walls—is one risk she has to take.
Why I'm Giving It Another Chance:I like the idea of the story - Marie Antoinette meets Breaking Bad. I liked that inside the palace of Versailles people live like it's the seventeen hundreds - but with awesome technology. The thing I didn't like last time was I didn't really believe the man Dani is supposed to marry, the "king," was as much of a villain as he was made out to be. Maybe he was underdeveloped, but to me, the character just seemed like a playboy that got blackmailed because he screwed up. I'm hoping if since I took time away from this book I can look at it with a new light and actually finish it this time.

Book Review: Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo

Shadow and Bone (Grisha Trilogy #1) by Leigh Bardugo Blurb:Surrounded by enemies, the once-great nation of Ravka has been torn in two by the Shadow Fold, a swath of near impenetrable darkness crawling with monsters who feast on human flesh. Now its fate may rest on the shoulders of one lonely refugee.
Alina Starkov has never been good at anything. But when her regiment is attacked on the Fold and her best friend is brutally injured, Alina reveals a dormant power that saves his life—a power that could be the key to setting her war-ravaged country free. Wrenched from everything she knows, Alina is whisked away to the royal court to be trained as a member of the Grisha, the magical elite led by the mysterious Darkling.
Yet nothing in this lavish world is what it seems. With darkness looming and an entire kingdom depending on her untamed power, Alina will have to confront the secrets of the Grisha . . . and the secrets of her heart.
My Review:I first started reading Shadow and Bone back in July. I'd heard a lot of things about the book at the time - both good and bad - and was curious to read it myself. The mistake I made at the time was to get the audiobook instead of the physical book. Now I have nothing against the audiobook, I liked the narrator and the story moved but my issue stems from a dislike for audiobooks in general. I don't like being read to and can't seem to focus on the story.
And Shadow and Bone was definitely not a story I wanted to miss anything of! From the beginning, I was enthralled by the world-building. Yes, Ravka and the Grishaverse reminded me of Russia - from the names to the setting to the accent the narrator put on for the audiobook, which I know some people find issue with but I saw it merely as a stylized version.
Alina was a little difficult to like in the beginning as I couldn't figure out why she had to make everything so difficult. I remember the part where the Darkling suggests she have a black kefta like his but she balks and prefers the blue and I couldn't help thinking "just take the damn robe-thing! You're supposed to stand out! You're unique!" But I supposed Ms. Bardugo did that as a way to show the character was humble and modest. However, I enjoyed watching Alina grow throughout the book and her loyalty to Mal was commendable although I still don't quite see the appeal.
Sure, by the end of Shadow and Bone I liked Alina with Mal (sort of) but I don't give much credit to a character that doesn't realize he cares for a girl until he sees her with someone else. I don't think guys are quite that dumb. I also would have appreciated more of why Mal was such a good tracker - is there something special about him that makes him so?
But my favorite character in this book (until the end) was the Darkling. He makes a superb villain although I wish things would have worked out between him and Alina. There was so much potential there, so much passion. But the Darkling was corrupt and he wanted power and that ruined everything. Let's all mourn for what could have been.
The Darkling slumped back in his chair. “Fine,” he said with a weary shrug. “Make me your villain.
Overall, I really enjoyed Shadow and Bone once I read the actual book (I'm officially done with audiobooks). The book itself is gorgeous, I love the map and the chapter headings but the story is wonderful as well. It moved fast and there wasn't anything forced about the storyline. I could definitely see myself reading this book again and devouring the other two books in the trilogy just as quickly.

Book Review: Bitten by Kelley Armstrong

Bitten by Kelley Armstrong Blurb:Elena Michaels seems like the typically strong and sexy modern woman, She lives with her architect boyfriend, writes for a popular newspaper, and works out at the gym. She's also a werewolf.
Elena has done all she can to assimilate to the human world, but the man whose bite changed her existence forever, and his legacy, continue to haunt her. Thrown into a desperate war for survival that tests her allegiance to a secret clan of werewolves, Elena must recon with who, and what, she is in this passionate, page-turning novel that begins the Women of the Otherworld series.
My Review:A year ago Elena Michaels left Stonehaven, Bear Valley, New York, and her werewolf pack behind to live a normal life. But it's not easy being a werewolf in Toronto. She has to sneak away in the middle of the night to Change and go for runs and hide her secret from her live-in boyfriend, Philip.
The Elena gets a call from her pack Alpha, Jeremy Danvers telling her to come home. Elena resists at first, knowing that returning home to Stonehaven will just dredge up the past again and simultaneous remind her and make her forget why she left in the first place. It will also mean seeing Clayton Danvers again - her former lover who bit her and turned her into a werewolf.
But Elena is needed back at Stonehaven. A mutt (non-pack werewolf) has killed a woman - and she won't be the last. As Elena reluctantly returns home she falls back into her old patterns and routines. Unbeknownst the to the pack, the troubles they're about to face is bigger than one errant mutt - and not all of them will make it out of the uprising alive. Will Elena realize she needs the pack - and Clayton - as much as they need her? Or will the mutt uprising drive her away from her old life forever?
Let me start by saying, I watched the television show before reading this book. Yes, there are differences between the two, but I believe they're both great despite (or maybe due to) those differences.
Elena is a strong female lead, her difficult upbringing saw to the strength she would embrace as an adult. I really liked this spin on werewolves, where Elena was the only female werewolf in existence. It made her sound more unique, one woman among the men.
I love Clayton, and watching Elena try to deny her feelings for him as she tried to tell herself being with him was just returning to the familiar and nothing else was realistic. I also love the rest of the pack members, although I'm sad that Logan has a much smaller role in the book than he did in the show and also Jeremy seemed warmer on the show - albeit at times I wasn't sure he was trustworthy on the show.
Overall, this book was as easy to get hooked on as the show and I didn't want to put it down.  Despite it being a rather long book I didn't feel like the story dragged or got boring at all. Bitten is filled with action and sexy shirtless werewolves and I found myself loving it even more than Charlaine Harris's True Blood series! This book is definitely a must-read for Urban Fantasy lovers!
My Rating:★★★★★5 of 5 Stars!

"What I'm Reading" Wednesday #96

This morning I'll be starting an ARC I'm reviewing for a blog tour before I allow myself to read the stack of library books I picked up last weekend (making myself wait is a real struggle though!). This "WIR"-Wednesday I'm Reading...

Six Little Secrets by Katlyn Duncan Blurb:The newest fast-paced YA thriller novella from Katlyn Duncan
Some secrets can never stay hidden for long…
Six teenagers meet in Saturday detention: a brain, a beauty, a cheerleader, a rebel, a recluse and the new girl.
But someone is watching. Someone has made sure that they are all in the same room at the same time. Someone knows that each of them is hiding a terrible secret…
…and by the end of detention, everyone will know the truth.
Why I Requested This Book:I wasn't going to take on any more ARCs this year but I really liked the sound of this one. It reminds me kind of The Breakfast Club meets (maybe?) And Then There Were None or Pretty Little Liars. I've heard that this is a very short read which is exactly what I'm looking for once I finish Bitten. I just hope it lives up to my expectations!

NaNoWriMo Prep

There are only 15 days until the start of NaNoWriMo 2017! Those of you that are writers might know what that is but if not NaNoWriMo stands for National Novel Writing Month, which runs during the month of November each year.

What is NaNoWriMo?Each year writers around the world challenge themselves to write a novel, at least 50,000 words during the month of November. Is it really possible? Yes! My first year I wrote about 54,000 words and last year I wrote about 63,000 words if memory serves me right. This would be my third year participating.
Alas, the past two years I've participated were easier than this fall is shaping up to be. Even though I've had this year's idea festering in the back of my mind for a few months now I'm currently dealing with a relative that is about to come out of a physical therapy facility and will be arriving home around the end of October. It's been a stressful month dealing with everything - lots of paperwork and phone calls and incompetent people in the medical/insurance field, but I digress. Nonetheless, I'm going to at least try and see how much I can get done in the 30 days. Anything will be an accomplishment at this point because I don't want to push myself too hard.
A Little About My 2017 NaNoWriMo ProjectFor the second year in a row, I'm turning to the YA Fantasy Genre for my NaNoWriMo project.
Title: Monsters and MistGenre: YA FantasyMinimum Word Count for NaNoWriMo: 50,000 WordsWord Count I'd be happy with if I fail to meet 50,000: 30,000 WordsEstimated Chapter Count: 15-20
Main Characters:Andromeda "Drom" Mistsplitter - Aged 18
Thane "Cutter" Cruelseas - Aged 20

How I'm Prepping For NaNoWriMo- Outlining the chapters and what I want to happen in each chapter.
- Character building for my two main characters. I like to let the other characters develop as I go along.
- Worldbuilding and creation of the mythology of that world.
- Pinning story ideas on Pinterest.
- Building a playlist to write to for NaNoWriMo.
It would be great to be able to attend some of the write-ins for NaNoWriMo but the two regions closest to me are 30-40 miles away and I don't have transportation to get to them every weekend. I also don't really know any of the other local writers in the town I live in. On the bright side, I have a lot of writer friends I've met online so I'll have the support of some online friends at least.
***
Are you doing NaNoWriMo this year? How are you prepping? Are you a planner or a pantser?
